Bringing critical theory to bear on questions of gerontology, Maugans corrects gerontology's traditional leanings. Aging Parents, Ambivalent Baby Boomers includes reflections on the society rather than just the individual and looks at qualitative as well as quantitative methods.

This is the first book to provide readers with an overall understanding of changing patterns in the extended and conjugal family relationships of the second largest ethnic minority group in the United States.

Providing an adequate conceptual apparatus for the explanation and interpretation of behavior associated with race, ethinicity, and socioeconomic status is the goal of this book. Empirical research findings and their theoretical analysis are linked. E. Franklin Frazier, recognized minorities as mirrors of their society. He hypothesized that study of their adaptations would provide a clearer understanding of the relation of human motivation to culture. Race, Ethnicity, and Socioeconomic Status confirms the Frazier hypothesis and extracts from studies of blacks and other racial and ethnic minority populations propositions applicable to majority as well as minority groups. Theses studies of intergroup relations were conducted during the past 25 years and provide a perspective on changing patterns of contact between cultural gropus in the United States. Adaptations associated with race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status are analyzed from the perspective of sociology as a science of humanity. Historical trends as well as contemporary situations are considered; social, psychological, and geographical factors are researched as contextual variables in intergroup relations. By analyzing demographic data pertaining to mortality, disease, delinquency, and poverty, the varying contributions to the human condition of individual attributes, group customs, and institutional regulations are ascertained. Institutional and community studies illuminate the prides, fears, and prejudices of dominant and subdominant groups, particularly with reference to racial and ethnic relations in education. Also identified in these studies are the rights and responsibilities of such groups toward each other in social interaction.

This book presents an overview of that theoretical framework known as symbolic interactionism. It details the major intellectual and philosophical antecedents of the interactionist perspective, i.e., evolutionism, Scottish moral philosophy, German idealism, pragmatism, and functional psychology. Under the heading evolutionism, the Darwinian notion of the mutually determinative relationship existing between environments and organisms is discussed, as are Henri Bergson's conceptions of the nature of radical, abrupt departures from earlier life forms and of the emergence of novel events. Scottish moral philosophers are dealt with in terms of their contribution to the conceptual inventory of symbolic interactionism. Of particular relevance here are concepts such as the impartial spectator 'sympathy', the 'I', the 'Me', 'role taking', 'generalized other', and 'looking-glass self.' Those German idealists exerting an impact on George Herbert Mead and symbolic interactionism, namely, Fichte, Von Schelling, Kant, and Hegel receive mention. American pragmatic philosophy is then summarized, and special attention is given to the writings of Charles S. Pierce, William James, and John Dewey. The second chapter discusses the major early interactionists, i.e., Charles Horton Cooley, William Isaac Thomas, and George Herbert Mead. Part two discusses the principal varieties of contemporary symbolic interactionism. Major 'schools' receiving attention are the 'Chicago School', the 'Iowa School', the 'Dramaturgical Genre', and 'Ethnomethodology.' A unique feature of this section is that it ends with an attempt to provide a single sentence description of the symbolic interactionist viewpoint. Mead's writings are dealt with in terms of his utilization of such pivotal concepts as symbols, role taking, self, society, and mind. A listing of the primary characteristics of the early interactionism closes out this section of the book. The third section provides a representative set of criticisms of interactionism. They are provided by interactionists and also by those who favor other sociological orientations. Both early and contemporary interactionism come under fire, and the criticisms range from the mild to the sharp. The perspective stands accused, by friend and foe alike, of being quaint, ahistorical, noneconomic, imprecise, and apolitical. It has also ignored the unconscious and emotive components in human behavior, and it manifests a rather strong astructural bias. Interactionists may now be in the process of correcting these defects.

When Stanford M. Lyman authored The Seven Deadly Sins: Society and Evil in 1978 it was hailed by Alasdair MacIntyre as 'a book of absorbing interest and importance_[that] places us all in his debt.' By Nelson Hart as 'a masterful and thought-provoking book_[that] is the only scholarly treatment of sin that is so well-informed by the best of ancient through modern perspectives.' By James A. Aho as a work whose 'abstract hardly does justice to the scholarly and detailed analysis of sin.' And by Harry Cohen as a 'book_[that] stands as a beautiful illustration of what holistic, idiosyncratic, interdisciplinary, and creative thinking and writing can bring to bear on the age-old problem of society and evil.' The American Sociological Association's section on the Sociology of the Emotions selected this book as one of the works that laid the foundations for the study of pride, lust, envy, and anger—basic sentiments embedded in the social process. For this revised and expanded edition Lyman has written a new chapter, 'Sentiments, Sin, and Social Conflict: Toward a Sociology of the Emotions.' The new edition will be a valuable work for courses in social psychology, ethics, deviance, and the sociology of morals and of religion.

Is social violence learned? By whom? When? Is it characteristic of certain groups, in certain social strata? Under what conditions? What are its personal and social costs? What do people expect to gain from it? What does it actually accomplish? When the long-lasting and unhealing sores that violence leaves are so counterproductive, why do people resort to it rather than to more peaceful alternatives? The civil conflict in Northern Ireland since 1968 presents opportunities as a locale in which to probe for more light on these significant questions. The area is small. The participants are highly literate and vocal.

Fundamental crises exist and are intensifying in economic and political institutions worldwide. These crises are also expressed in the turmoil in the social and cultural spheres and in the personal lives of millions who are jobless, homeless, hungry, and powerless. Humanist sociologists are activists rooted in the reality of history and change and guided by a concern for the 'real life' problems of equality, peace, and social justice. They view people as active shapers of social life, capable of creating societies in which everyone's potential can unfold. Alfred McClung Lee, introduces the volume with 'Sociology: Humanist and Scientific' and develops the theme that a sociology that is humanist is also scientific. The other nine selections are grouped into four parts: 'The Individual and Social Life' ; 'Social Institutions: Technology, Science, and Formal Organization' ; 'Political Structures: Issues of Justice and Equality' ; and 'Methodological Critiques and Counterproposals.' David O'Brien and Richard Sterne suggest that the logic of social inquiry should be reversed. Victoria Rader analyzes the way in which the social system has constructed artificial stages in the human life cycle. David Gil argues that the paradigm of human society needs to be replaced by a paradigm embodying egalitarianism, cooperation, and liberty. Sal Restivo and Michael Zenzen call for a wholistic approach in both the physical and social sciences. C. George Benello argues for a higher and more complex form of organization that is liberating, self-governing, voluntaristic, and flexible. James Kelly arrives at an understanding of the meaning of 'social justice,' as an organizing and revolutionizing principle in social life. Walda Katz Fishman and Robert Newby focus on the current intensification of inequality and right-wing reaction as capitalism sinks deeper into its final crisis. Jerold Starr identifies the dominance of logical positivism in mainstream research methodology, in contrast to the earlier sociological and anthropological tradition of participant observation, and calls for a return to that tradition. Finally, Ted Goertzel and Joseph Fashing demonstrate the centrality of the 'normal curve,' a tool from the workbench of positivism, in justifying existing social and structural inequalities.

In the past twelve years, research into homosexuality has undergone a major shift in emphasis. A concern with documenting the etiology, treatment, and psychological adjustment of homosexuals has been replaced by an interest in understanding how people develop homosexual identities-that is, organized perceptions of themselves as homosexuals in relation to sexual and romantic settings. People are not born with perceptions of themselves as homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexual. Sexual identities evolve slowly, over a long period of time. This book develops an ideal-typical model of homosexual identity formation that represents a synthesis of, and elaboration on, previous theorizing and research on the subject. The model draws heavily upon accounts provided by homosexuals themselves. The model developed is unique in four major ways: it is grounded in current research and theory; it describes identity formation in both lesbians and gay males; it notes similarities as well as differences between the sexes in homosexual identity development; and it explains differences between gay males and lesbians in terms of their experiences with gender-role socialization. This is the first book to differentiate analytically the constructs of self, self-concept, identity, and homosexual identity within a unified theoretical framework. With one major exception, these conceptual distinctions have not been drawn in previous discussions of homosexual identity, and this lack has contributed to conceptual disarray. The theoretical approach adopted here is symbolic interactionism, a social-psychological perspective within the discipline of sociology. There is a sharp disagreement among theorists about the nature and meaning of homosexual identities. Do homosexuals' identities represent a confusion of being with doing, the mistaken belief that one is what one does, the equation of the entire self with one type of behavior? Do homosexual identities represent one of several major interests that are constructed socially and defined as reflecting essential facets of personality?

This work provides a crystallization and particularization of a school of sociological thinking variously called "creative sociology," "existential sociology," "phenomenological sociology," "conflict theory," and "dramaturgical analysis." The result is a methodological synthesis of the "dual" visions of Erving Goffman and Harold Garfinkel. This book equips the reader with a framework for providing adequate descriptions of those face-to-face encounters that make up everyday life. This edition includes essays not found in the first edition, as well as a new introduction that locates it in the spectrum of contemporary theorizing.
