This all-new edition of A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament uses the Greek text of the 29th edition of the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece (NA29) and the 6th edition of the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament (UBS6) and comments on all apparatus entries of UBS6 in concise and comprehensible language. The edition is also suitable for use with the Nestle-Aland, as the Nestle-Aland also contains all the apparatus entries of UBS6 (with a different selection of witnesses). In addition, a detailed introduction provides key information on New Testament textual tradition, basic principles of textual criticism, and guidelines for using the UBS Greek New Testament.

The author is a member of the editorial committee for NA29 and UBS6 and is therefore ideally suited to explain the decisions made by the committee in its preparation of these critical editions.

The 2025 version replaces Bruce M. Metzger’s A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament, which has been regarded as the standard work for decades but is now outdated in terms of research history.

The Reader’s Edition of the UBS6 Greek New Testament offers comprehensive translation aids for reading the Greek text of the New Testament. These include:

The appendix contains translations into English of all words that occur more than 30 times in the Greek New Testament. The edition has a modern, reader-friendly layout. It is the ideal introduction to fluent reading of the New Testament in its original language for all those who do not want to settle for an interlinear edition. In favor of the translation helps, the edition dispenses with a text-critical apparatus. The Greek text is identical to the text of the 6th edition of the Greek New Testament (UBS6) and the 29th edition of the Novum Testamentum Graece (NA29).

The most up-to-date text of the Greek New Testament with an easily accessible text-critical apparatus.

After more than ten years of intensive preparation, a new edition of the UBS Greek New Testament (6th edition) is now available. It offers the most up-to-date Greek text with the textual changes from the Editio Critica Maior volumes on the Acts of the Apostles (2017), the Gospel of Mark (2021), and Revelation (2024). The text differs from the text of the 5th edition in more than 100 places and is identical to that of the 29th edition of the Novum Testamentum Graece (NA29), which is in preparation for 2026.

The apparatus includes clearly structured entries on all major variants of the text. The selection of the passages was guided by the question of their relevance for translation and interpretation. The importance of the so-called Textus Receptus has also been given greater consideration compared to previous editions. The selection of manuscripts was focused on the most important witnesses, which are now supplemented by new manuscripts (papyri 128 to 141).

This sixth edition begins with an accessible introduction in English and is edited by an international and interdenominational committee, which is also responsible for NA29 and works closely with the Institute for New Testament Textual Research: Holger Strutwolf, Hugh Houghton, Christos Karakolis, David Parker, Stephen Pisano, David Trobisch, and Klaus Wacht.

Resources include:

A complete Greek-English dictionary of the New Testament (UBS6 and NA29)

This Greek-English New Testament dictionary is the product of many years of research in New Testament translation work worldwide. It differs from traditional dictionaries in a significant way: instead of listing the meanings of words according to logical-historical principles, the various definitions are presented according to their usage in the New Testament. In this way, the most important and frequent meanings appear first, while the secondary, less frequent translations follow.

It covers the complete vocabulary of the Greek New Testament according to the forthcoming 29th edition of the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece (NA29) and the 6th edition of the UBS Greek New Testament (UBS6). A system of cross-references connects related Greek terms, and an appendix provides an overview of groups of words with similar meanings.

The Biblia Hebraica Quinta (BHQ) is the latest, globally authoritative edition of the Hebrew Old Testament. It is a groundbreaking standard work for biblical scholarship.

The BHQ edition is being developed from scratch by an international and interdenominational team of scholars. The textual basis of the new edition is the oldest fully preserved manuscript of the Hebrew Bible. Ezekiel is volume twelve of the complete BHQ series.

The text-critical apparatus is completely redesigned in this edition and the material presented is greatly expanded. All significant variants from the Qumran texts are now listed in full. For the first time, the edition also contains a detailed commentary section, which makes scientific work easier. Each volume first offers an introduction to the biblical book, in which the relevant textual witnesses are characterized and their use in the critical apparatus is explained. The commentary section not only contains numerous in-depth comments on individual questions critical to the text, but also a translation of the large masorah and explanations of the small masorah. Both the commentary section and the text-critical apparatus are written in English.
