The authors of the best-selling book ""PID Controllers: Theory, Design, and Tuning"" once again combine their extensive knowledge in the PID arena to bring you an in-depth look at the world of PID control. A new book, ""Advanced PID Control"" builds on the basics learned in ""PID Controllers"" but augments it through use of advanced control techniques. Design of PID controllers are brought into the mainstream of control system design by focusing on requirements that capture effects of load disturbances, measurement noise, robustness to process variations and maintaining set points. In this way it is possible to make a smooth transition from PID control to more advanced model based controllers. It is also possible to get insight into fundamental limitations and to determine the information needed to design good controllers. The book provides a solid foundation for understanding, operating and implementing the more advanced features of PID controllers, including auto-tuning, gain scheduling and adaptation. Particular attention is given to specific challenges such as reset windup, long process dead times, and oscillatory systems. As in their other book, modeling methods, implementation details, and problem-solving techniques are also presented.

Troubleshooting loops and systems is something all technicians must do, but that few truly master. This newly revised edition draws on the author's long experience as an instrument and electrical engineer and his maintenance expertise to provide a detailed look at the skills and knowledge required for troubleshooting. Interspersed with a wealth of practical detail and real-world examples are Mostia's no-nonsense discussions of what a good troubleshooter needs to know. He provides an in-depth discussion of the basic logical framework that underlies all troubleshooting as well as advanced troubleshooting techniques.

As commercial and residential networks rapidly go the wireless route, will industrial networks soon follow? This fourth edition includes the increasingly popular wireless application Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and also provides a clear, unbiased view of the emerging wireless communications market. Author Dick Caro explores wireless communications from the factory and process automation viewpoint to help you make clear decisions on the timing and strategy for implementing wireless networks for automation projects. According to Caro, going wireless is more than just plugging in some wireless components to replace the wires. Residential networks are easily justified using today’s inexpensive wireless components to avoid costly or unsightly wire installations. Industrial use is not quite so clear due to privacy and security concerns and the potential for signal loss in plant environments. Industrial use must have secure communications that never fails. However, the cost of industrial wiring is so high, that wireless can usually be justified. This fourth edition includes a general update of events that have occurred since the previous edition. Most importantly, it includes an extensive analysis of new wireless technology intended for process control, such as ISA100 Wireless (ISA100.11a), WirelessHART, WIA-PA, and WiFi, including IEEE 802.11n and 802.11ac.

In his preface, the editor describes this volume as a road map to the field of flow measurement. Written for programmable logic controller programmers, this book describes how to create a functional machine control program for industrial equipment that is sequential in nature. The programming methodology starts by breaking the machine into its basic elements. These small and manageable elements allow the programmer to focus on large concerns before dealing with specifics. The methodology then shows how to program each element and how to assemble the elements together into a complete machine control program. The book is intended to provide programmers with the confidence they need to reach decisions, and move forward with the certainty that the program is performing as intended without odd combinations of logic causing unintentional actions. The sequential nature of events will also help operators and maintenance personnel troubleshoot and maintain the equipment after it is put into operation. Ladder logic illustrations demonstrate each part of the text. Although the ladder logic examples use the instruction set for the Allen Bradley SLC 500 programmable logic controller, the concepts and techniques can be used with any brand of programmable logic controller.

Are you having trouble demonstrating to management what a manufacturing execution system (MES) is and what it can do for you? Or do you simply need to justify why you even need a MES? Perhaps you are the executive decision maker and just need some answers. Bianca Scholten, the author of the best-selling book, The Road to Integration: Applying ISA-95 in Manufacturing, shares her expertise on the topic in her latest easy-to-read guide to MES.In recent decades, says Scholten, industrial companies have invested much time and money in not only machine and production line automation but also in ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems. The MES falls between these two layers. Many of the preparatory activities (e.g., detailed production scheduling and recipe management), but also retrospective activities (e.g., data collection, reporting, and analysis) are primitive at best.Ideal for CEOs, CFOs, and managers, Scholten sheds some light on how to get out of this outdated situation using real-world examples and the knowledge gleaned from IT, production managers, and other colleagues who have been through the MES experience. She covers MES selection, company expectations during implementation and initial use of the MES, advice on developing and maintaining a multi-site MES template, and return on investment. She also adds a birdÂ's-eye view of the ISA-95 standard for better communication between systems and their applications.

Nowadays one only needs to read the newspaper headlines to appreciate the importance of Industrial Network Security. Almost daily an article comes out describing the threat to our critical infrastructure, from spies in our electrical grid to the looming threat of cyberwar. Whether we talk about process control systems that run chemical plants and refineries, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems for utilities, or factory automation systems for discrete manufacturing, the backbone of our nation’s critical infrastructure consists of these industrial networks and is dependent on their continued operation. This easy-to-read book introduces managers, engineers, technicians, and operators on how to keep our industrial networks secure amid rising threats from hackers, disgruntled employees, and even cyberterrorists.

Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) technology has evolved over the past 30 years as a method of monitoring and controlling large processes. This newly revised reference book offers overviews of SCADA's component technologies, as well as details necessary to understand the big picture. SCADA processes cover areas that may be measured in the thousands of square miles, and have dimensions that may be hundreds, occasionally thousands, of miles long. Now a mature technology, SCADA includes, but is not limited to, software packages that can be incorporated in a larger system. After completing its 14 self-study units, readers should be conversant with SCADA nomenclature and architecture, understand the basic technology of the system's building blocks, understand its limitations, understand how it can benefit particular operations, and have a basis for selecting appropriate SCADA technologies for their operational requirements.

In this in-depth book, the authors address the concepts and terminology that are needed to work in the field of process control. The material is presented in a straightforward manner that is independent of the control system manufacturer. It is assumed that the reader may not have worked in a process plant environment and may be unfamiliar with the field devices and control systems. Much of the material on the practical aspects of control design and process applications is based on the authors personal experience gained in working with process control systems. Thus, the book is written to act as a guide for engineers, managers, technicians, and others that are new to process control or experienced control engineers who are unfamiliar with multi-loop control techniques. After the traditional single-loop and multi-loop techniques that are most often used in industry are covered, a brief introduction to advanced control techniques is provided. Whether the reader of this book is working as a process control engineer, working in a control group or working in an instrument department, the information will set the solid foundation needed to understand and work with existing control systems or to design new control applications. At various points in the chapters on process characterization and control design, the reader has an opportunity to apply what was learned using web-based workshops. The only items required to access these workshops are a high-speed Internet connection and a web browser. Dynamic process simulations are built into the workshops to give the reader a realistic hands-on experience. Also, one chapter of the book is dedicated to techniques that may be used to create process simulations using tools that are commonly available within most distributed control systems. As control techniques are introduced, simple process examples are used to illustrate how these techniques are applied in industry. The last chapter of the book, on process applications, contains several more complex examples from industry that illustrate how basic control techniques may be combined to meet a variety of application requirements.

In this book, the authors address the concepts and terminology that are needed to apply advanced control techniques in the process industry. The book is written for the process or control engineer that is familiar with traditional control but has little or no experience in designing, installing, commissioning and maintaining advanced control applications. Each chapter of the book is structured to allow a person to quickly understand the technology and how it is applied. Application examples are used to show what is required to address an application. Also, a section of each chapter is dedicated to a more in-depth discussion of the technology for the reader that is interested in understanding the mathematical basis for the technology. A workshop is provided at the end of each chapter that explores the technology. The reader may view the workshop solution by going to the web site that accompanies the book. The book provides comprehensive coverage of the major advanced control techniques that are most commonly used in the process industry. This includes tools for monitoring control system performance, on-demand and adaptive tuning techniques, model predictive control, LP optimisation, data analytics for batch and continuous processes, fuzzy logic control, neural networks and advancements in PID to use with wireless measurements. Since many readers may work with an existing DCS that does not support advanced control, a chapter of the book is dedicated to tools and techniques that the authors have found useful in integrating advanced control tools into an existing control system. Also, one chapter of the book addresses how dynamic process simulations may be easily created in a DCS to support checkout and operator training on the use of advanced control.

With the release of the ISA-TR84.00.07 technical report on performance-based design of fire and gas detection systems for process industries, risk-based techniques for detector placement have become prevalent in fire and gas system (FGS) design. While the technical report addresses designing the FGS based on the user’s risk profile and performance requirements, it does not provide any guidance on implementing the FGS lifecycle. This handbook provides a thorough overview of the FGS design lifecycle presented in the technical report, with an examination of each phase of the lifecycle and the practical activities required to develop an FGS design. In addition to discussing the design process, this handbook also provides valuable appendices that contain data for FGS system risk analysis, FGS risk grading procedures, and a discussion of the FGS mapping techniques used to verify the achievement of the newly defined coverage targets.
