As the starting point for any engineering project, mastering conceptual design means you'll understand how to work from a client brief, produce viable structural solutions, and test the feasibility of your ideas. You'll identify and solve major problems before you embark on a detailed design, and learn the skills to work with clients and colleagues from all disciplines.Drawing on the expertise of seven engineering/teaching professionals, and led by the University of Bristol's Dr James Norman, this book sets out to develop students' and graduates' understanding of the process - providing inspiration for the Institution's IPD core objective on conceptual design.Topics covered include: generating and communicating ideas through sketching and writing, preparing the brief, the concept design process itself, consideration of site constraints and ground conditions, developing a structural scheme, understanding robustness and stability, sizing of elements, and what to produce at the end of the process. It also includes worked examples.

We are on the verge of a new generation of technology and innovation. Finite Element Analysis is being linked parametrically with CAD; artificial intelligence and machine learning are being applied to everyday engineering tasks. What does today's graduate (and those with more experience too) need to know about these 'engineering assistants' in order to harness their full potential? Peter Debney takes the reader on a practical, theoretical, and philosophical journey; balancing a complex subject with a fresh, engaging, and often humorous style. Forewords from Chris Wise, Tristram Carfrae, and Jon Leach precede chapters that discuss:Design (including parametric design)Modelling (and its problems)Analysis (basics and methods/linear, nonlinear, and dynamic)OptimisationAI and machine learningThe future of engineering softwareAn extensive reference list supports the text.

The Institution's Design recommendations for multi-storey and underground car parks has set the standard for car park design since 1976. After more than 45 years and four editions, this guidance builds on that legacy to provide completely revised and updated information for anyone involved in car park design, construction, maintenance and reuse. It reflects the significant changes to vehicular size, weight and manoeuvrability in recent years, to offer modern guidance on parking bay sizes and deck loadings. Hybrid and electric vehicle use, together with the need for inclusive design and a far greater emphasis on sustainable solutions, have necessitated a completely new approach to internal layouts and other requirements for structural design - including the minimisation of fire spread. There are also chapters dedicated to futureproofing, quality control during construction, suicide prevention measures, asset management, and special (robotic) car parks. The guidance is based on UK design methodologies and practice (and where possible/appropriate, has considered any likely updates to the Eurocodes and Building Regulations) but the principles have global applicability.

Subsidence can affect many types of structure and cause a range of faults, from minor cracking to total collapse. In 2000, the Institution’s Subsidence of low-rise buildings (2nd edition) was created to provide an all-embracing guide to the subject of subsidence rectification. This new guidance draws on the significant developments of the last 23 years — in areas such as data capture and trending analysis, improvements in diagnostic and investigative methods, and additional rectification processes — and benefits from a wide-ranging team of specialists to provide world-leading, in-depth guidance that has been supported by the UK’s Forestry Commission. The result is a superlative publication which covers the entire subject of subsidence, from the discovery of a crack to the sign-off of a completed rectification project

The first edition (2010) provided a background to the fundamental attributes of robustness and an interpretation of, and practical guidance to, the regulations being followed in the UK at the time (primarily British Standards). This second edition (2023) builds on the first, to be fully-aligned with the Eurocodes — with a particular focus on BS EN 1991-1-7 — and the Building Safety Act. It contains new chapters on the subjects of ‘Risk’, ‘Design of structural alterations to existing buildings’, ‘Classification of buildings’, and ‘The risk of disproportionate collapse in fire’. It also considers ‘light steel frame’ as a material distinct from steel. There is an emphasis on modern methods of construction (MMC) and a selection of new case studies.

'Sustainable design' asks; How we can design while aiming to do no harm? Unfortunately, when we don't reach that aim, we end up doing harm. 'Regenerative design' asks a different question; How can we design in a way that increases biodiversity, reduces carbon and leads to flourishing communities? In short how can we design so that people (and the ecosystems that support them) thrive. In this book the authors explore how, as structural engineers, we can bring about change. Using creative metaphors and case studies they:* Explain how engineers can change their practice now - to create a regenerative future* Explore the different levels of change - from individual projects to the culture of our industry* Illustrate how we can learn from living systems* Show how, by considering not just our site but the whole supply and waste chain, we can reimagine our impact - both positive and negativeThe book is a creative call for radical change; encouraging engineers, and anyone else involved in the built environment, to think and design differently - to do more good
