This book is a collection of readings in phonological theory with special reference to English. The essays it contains are all concerned to a significant extent with discussion and criticism of the theory of phonology developed by Noam Chomsky and Morris Halle in their monograph The Sound Pattern of English. The aim in compiling this collection has been to bring together new papers, and papers that were previously only available in informal duplicated form or in comparatively inaccessible publications. This collection is of value to anyone teaching or studying English or general linguistics who wishes to make a serious study of current phonological theory, and serves as a reference anthology of permanent value to the specialist.

This expanded second edition carries forward the initial insights into the biological and existential significances of animation by taking contemporary research findings in cognitive science and philosophy and in neuroscience into critical and constructive account. It first takes affectivity as its focal point, elucidating it within both an enactive and qualitative affective-kinetic dynamic. It follows through with a thoroughgoing interdisciplinary inquiry into movement from three perspectives: mind, brain, and the conceptually reciprocal realities of receptivity and responsivity as set forth in phenomenology and evolutionary biology, respectively. It ends with a substantive afterword on kinesthesia, pointing up the incontrovertible significance of the faculty to cognition and affectivity. Series A

The English language in its complex shapes and forms changes fast. This thoroughly revised edition has been refreshed with current examples of change and has been updated regarding archeological research. Most suggestions brought up by users and reviewers have been incorporated, for instance, a family tree for Germanic has been added, Celtic influence is highlighted much more, there is more on the origin of Chancery English, and internal and external change are discussed in much greater detail. The philosophy of the revised book remains the same with an emphasis on the linguistic history and on using authentic texts. My audience remains undergraduates (and beginning graduates). The goals of the class and the book are to come to recognize English from various time periods, to be able to read each stage with a glossary, to get an understanding of typical language change, internal and external, and to understand something about language typology through the emphasis on the change from synthetic to analytic. This book has a companion website: http://dx.doi.org/10.1075/z.183.website
Prolegomena to Inferential Discourse Processing

This book shows that in reading verbal texts human reasoning is responsible for the recognition and construction of different forms of organization. On the one hand, it spells out in what ways human thinking succeeds in recognizing the surface form of grammatical organization which is characteristic of discourse expression (termed ‘cohesion’). On the other hand, it makes clear which human reasoning processes are involved in the construction of the different levels of organization which are characteristic of text content (termed ‘coherence’). Much attention is devoted to the hierarchical relationships between cohesion and coherence. In line with these hierarchizing endeavors, this book also addresses the related problem of whether the reasoning processes involved in reading verbal texts are ranked in order of importance. This book lends much weight to the empirical control of its claims. It does not only consider the language processing activities of normals, but it also devotes a great deal of attention to the disordered language reception activities of schizophrenics and aphasics.
Literature as Experience-Inviting Discourse

Literature as Experience-Inviting Discourse presents a general perspective on the art of literature, starting from the questions of what literature is, how it works, and what it is for. It is a main theme in the book that what we typically call literature is written to be read and freely experienced - it is "e;experience-inviting discourse"e; meant for "e;experience-oriented reading"e;. This central idea leads to a number of important literary-theoretical topics. Among the issues addressed in depth are the structure of verbal communication, the makeup of the concept of literature, the psychology of literary reading, and the relationship between literary criticism and experience-oriented reading. On this last point the author underlines the difference in purpose between critical and experience-oriented reading. What we typically call literature is written for offering worthwhile experiences, not for being made the object of literary-critical observations, no matter how valuable these may be in their own way.
Literary Conceptualizations of Growth

Literary Conceptualizations of Growth explores those processes through which maturation is represented in adolescent literature by examining how concepts of growth manifest themselves in adolescent literature and by interrogating how the concept of growth structures scholars’ ability to think about adolescence. Cognitive literary theory provides the theoretical framework, as do the related fields of cognitive linguistics and experiential philosophy; historical constructions of the concept of growth are also examined within the context of the history of ideas. Cross-cultural literature from the traditional Bildungsroman to the contemporary Young Adult novel serve as examples. Literary Conceptualizations of Growth ultimately asserts that human cognitive structures are responsible for the pervasiveness of growth as both a metaphor and a narrative pattern in adolescent literature.
Writing and Identity
The discoursal construction of identity in academic writing

Writing is not just about conveying ‘content’ but also about the representation of self. (One of the reasons people find writing difficult is that they do not feel comfortable with the ‘me’ they are portraying in their writing. Academic writing in particular often poses a conflict of identity for students in higher education, because the ‘self’ which is inscribed in academic discourse feels alien to them.)The main claim of this book is that writing is an act of identity in which people align themselves with socio-culturally shaped subject positions, and thereby play their part in reproducing or challenging dominant practices and discourses, and the values, beliefs and interests which they embody. The first part of the book reviews recent understandings of social identity, of the discoursal construction of identity, of literacy and identity, and of issues of identity in research on academic writing. The main part of the book is based on a collaborative research project about writing and identity with mature-age students, providing:• a case study of one writer’s dilemmas over the presentation of self;• a discussion of the way in which writers’ life histories shape their presentation of self in writing;• an interview-based study of issues of ownership, and of accommodation and resistance to conventions for the presentation of self;• linguistic analysis of the ways in which multiple, often contradictory, interests, values, beliefs and practices are inscribed in discourse conventions, which set up a range of possibilities for self-hood for writers. The book ends with implications of the study for research on writing and identity, and for the learning and teaching of academic writing. The book will be of interest to students and researchers in the fields of social identity, literacy, discourse analysis, rhetoric and composition studies, and to all those concerned to understand what is involved in academic writing in order to provide wider access to higher education.

Research on how stakeholders interpret language test scores and how they make decisions about language proficiency is critical because score-based decisions can be extremely consequential for test takers, score users, such as educational institutions and employers, and the society overall. This edited volume is intended as a primary resource for language assessment researchers, developers, and policy makers interested in efficiently communicating score information related to language proficiency. Its nine chapters report on complicated, often behind-the-scenes research efforts to enhance the interpretation of English language test scores developed by ETS, by employing diverse methodologies such as vertical linking, score mapping, standard setting, scale anchoring, and score concordance. In a post-pandemic era full of challenges and change in the field of language assessment, this volume highlights the ethical responsibility of test providers to engage in sometimes challenging research and development efforts to better serve score users.

This edited volume offers a systematic and critical examination of how theories in second language acquisition have been formulated, justified, and sustained, with particular attention to their status as explanatory accounts. Rather than introducing theories in isolation, the chapters revisit influential hypotheses and frameworks across linguistic, psycholinguistic, and cognitive approaches, asking what they genuinely explain, what assumptions they rely on, and where their limits lie. The book brings together multiple interdisciplinary perspectives, unified by a shared concern with theory construction and evaluation. Its aim is not to propose a single new model, but to sharpen conceptual foundations and to clarify productive directions for future research. Intended for graduate students and early- to mid-career researchers in SLA and related fields, the volume complements existing handbooks by providing a rigorously critical update to debates that have remained largely unchanged since earlier landmark works such as Long's Problems in SLA.

The Sounds of New Orleans is the first book-length sociophonetic study of New Orleans English, one of the most distinctive yet understudied urban varieties of American English. Based on 114 sociolinguistic interviews, the book examines three salient Southern features - /l/-vocalization, the PIN~PEN merger, and /aɪ/-monophthongization - and explores how they vary across age, gender, ethnicity, education, and urban versus suburban speech. Combining quantitative sociophonetic analysis with ethnographic fieldwork, the study situates New Orleans within the broader dialect landscape of the US South while highlighting the city's unique cultural and linguistic history, including the role of Creole identity. The book also engages critically with contemporary sociophonetic methodology, comparing traditional and novel analytical tools. Accessible to researchers and students in sociolinguistics, phonetics, and dialectology, as well as readers interested in New Orleans culture, the book offers a detailed and community-informed account of language variation in the city.

This volume presents the first in-depth exploration of Kuwait within the framework of World Englishes. It examines the historical trajectory of English language contact, the contemporary spread of the language, and public attitudes toward its use in the country. Central to the study is the development and analysis of the Kuwaiti English National Corpus, almost 128 million words across both spoken and written texts. The volume also assesses the relevance of Schneider's (2003, 2007) Dynamic Model and Buschfeld and Kautzsch's (2017) Extra- and Intra-territorial Forces Model in the Gulf context. Findings reveal the emergence of innovative linguistic forms, particularly in discourse pragmatics, while also highlighting significant interpersonal variation and the multifaceted role of English in identity construction. This work offers valuable insights for scholars examining the status and functions of English in the Gulf and contributes to ongoing efforts to refine the World Englishes paradigm to better represent linguistic realities on the ground.

This volume collects papers that bring Germanic philology into the 21st century. The collection is distinguished by a multitude of approaches ranging from critical editing to theoretical linguistics. It covers a wide variety of subfields, including: Old Norse poetry, Runic inscriptions, onomastics, historical Germanic phonology and morphology, Old Norse morphosyntax, and the pedagogical import of philology in language departments. The volume is inspired by the work and teaching of Kari Ellen Gade, one of the most accomplished scholars of Old Norse philology, and the breadth of these contributions confirms her conviction that a philological interpretation of early poetry, literature, and language requires both a mastery and coordination of many subdisciplines. At a moment of uncertainty in teaching and research, this volume seeks to offer inspiration to future generations of philologists and historical linguists.

In the 1980s, Daniel Gile thought of the potential benefit for translation and interpreting students of simple conceptual building blocks that could help them make sense of their classroom experience and of their instructors' advice, especially as regards recurring challenges. The first edition of Basic Concepts and Models for Interpreter and Translator Training (1995) was the result of observation, introspection, critical engagement with the literature and small-scale original research. An extended, revised edition followed in 2009. In this third edition, analyses have been fine-tuned; more space has been given to signed language interpreting, which has much to teach to spoken language translators and interpreters; concepts and models, some of them new, some of them related to recent technology, are discussed in more depth, and the links between them and advances in interpreting studies and in related disciplines are clarified. A substantially updated edition of one of the most widely read and cited books in Translation and Interpreting Studies.

This volume investigates to what extent second language learners of English anticipate the end of a speaker's turn during turn-taking and what role prosodic cues play in this process. Drawing on two reaction-time experiments that partially replicate earlier turn-taking studies, it compares native speakers with learners of English at different PT-defined developmental stages. In particular, it examines whether beginning and advanced learners rely on prosodic cues in ways comparable to native speakers across different English question types. The findings show that prosody facilitates turn-end prediction in L2 learners, but that its contribution varies by question type and developmental proficiency. By integrating turn-taking research with Processability Theory, the volume advances current debates on predictive comprehension, prosody, and interaction in SLA. It will be of interest to scholars and graduate students in second language acquisition, psycholinguistics, discourse and interaction, and speech prosody.

This book brings together cutting-edge research on grammatical variation and change in English, showcasing the state of the art in contemporary corpus linguistics. The studies apply corpus-based and variationist methods to a wide range of grammatical categories (nominal, adjectival, verbal, adverbial, prepositional) across synchronic and diachronic perspectives. Its central aim is to demonstrate how empirical corpus evidence can enhance grammatical theory, especially within usage-based, cognitive, constructionalist frameworks. Of special interest is the volume’s diversity of data sources, innovative methodologies and, in general, contemporary treatments of ongoing variation and change, with an emphasis on World Englishes. Continuing the tradition of the Studies in Corpus Linguistics series, this book advances beyond existing research by providing new case studies and insights addressed to researchers, higher-education instructors and advanced students of English linguistics with interests in corpus linguistics, grammar and variation.

This monograph offers a timely and original contribution to applied linguistics by bringing into dialogue second language acquisition, inclusive language learning, and immersive technologies. The volume addresses a persistent gap in current research by focusing on specific language needs and diverse learner profiles, with particular attention to university students with dyslexia. Moving beyond tool-oriented perspectives, the book reconceptualizes Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence not only as educational aids, but as emerging cognitive frameworks that are reshaping how language is processed, experienced, and made meaningful. Within this perspective, this work foregrounds vocabulary acquisition, especially in English as a Foreign Language, as a foundational dimension of language development, and examines its central role for neurodivergent learners. By integrating theoretical reflection with design-oriented insights, the volume proposes a holistic and ethically grounded approach to inclusive language learning in technologically mediated environments. It will be of interest to researchers, lecturers, educators, and instructional designers in applied linguistics, language education, and educational technology.

This monograph presents the first book-length study to focus on formulaic humor and humorous formulae , situated at the crossroads of Pragmatics, Phraseology, and Conversational Humor Studies. Based upon a self-compiled corpus of 34 television series (4,214 episodes; 19.4 million words), it adopts a corpus-assisted, exploratory, mixed-method approach to analyze 13 types of humorous formulae across 146 samples. A conversation-analytical lens reveals how these formulaic patterns are systematically embedded in fictional dialogue and how they pragmatically shape scripted interaction. The study’s key contributions include a typology of humorous formulae, an account of their discursive functions, and new insights into their role in the stylistics of telecinematic discourse. Of special interest is its demonstration of how scripted talk employs formulaicity to generate humor efficiently and effectively. This book will appeal to scholars and advanced students in Linguistics, Pragmatics, Humor Studies, and media discourse, while extending existing knowledge on formulaicity in language use.

Practising Stylistics marks the career of Professor Paul Simpson, a leading figure in the discipline of stylistics, and one who embodies the practical and rigorous linguistic analysis of literary works and social discourse. A prominent figure in the Poetics and Linguistics Association (PALA) since its earliest days and Baines Professor of English Language at the University of Liverpool, Simpson has been a leading light and a steady hand on the stylistics tiller across his career. In this volume his friends, colleagues, co-authors and former students offer a series of essays that speak to the range and importance of Simpson’s influence. In its contribution and design, this book reflects the artisanal ethos of stylistics itself. Each contribution includes a detailed illustrative example of stylistics practice, with argument and method open to examination, replication and constructive critical discussion. In this volume full-length stylistics essays are interspersed with shorter ‘vignettes’ that demonstrate practical applications of stylistics which are anchored by strong theoretical awareness. As such, each chapter is representative of the rigorous stylistic analysis championed by Simpson.Demonstrating the value of stylistic approaches to literary criticism and discourse analysis by illustrating its workings is the most accessible way of reaffirming the discipline and so this book will likely be a key resource for scholars seeking the sort of exemplary stylistic practice inspired by Paul Simpson.

The book discusses consciousness and several theories that attempt to explain the phenomenon. So far, no one has been able to explain how the brain creates consciousness, mainly because no way has been discovered to measure it. The book’s main innovations are as follows:(1) A coherent treatment of two types of explanatory models relevant to consciousness. The first, a mechanistic model, is used in the natural sciences and has been accepted in psychology. The second, a mentalistic model, is based on the individual''s inner world (e.g., will, belief, intention).(2) Description of a theoretical model which proposes that sensory stimulation is initially processed automatically and unconsciously, and explains the transition from non-conscious to conscious states and vice versa.(3) Provision of new arguments that explain why highly sophisticated computers or robots have not yet developed consciousness.(4) Discussion based on the concept of consciousness that explains why psychology has not developed in a way that is similar to the sciences (e.g., physics).

The goal of this volume is to explore and make sense of the overall scope, implications and consequences of shifting discourses of war, peace and neutrality across time and space, in relation to conflict-ridden geopolitical environments characterized by power struggles, political polarizations, divergent goal settings and ideological confrontations (from the Russo-Japanese war, 1904–1905, to Russia’s war against Ukraine, 2022-present). Through a broad range of cutting-edge case studies (Finland, Germany, India, Japan, Poland, Romania, Russia/Soviet Union/Russian Federation, Slovakia, Sweden, The Netherlands, Ukraine, USA), the authors go beyond mainstream studies on war and peace by challenging existing paradigms and undergoing in-depth scrutiny of discourse argumentation strategies, historical metanarratives, reflective storytelling and visual mediatization. Readers are called upon to reflect on, evaluate and discuss issues raised by questions like the following: To what extent are dogmatic and power-based discourse practices consequential in the evolution of political language and the language of international diplomacy regarding processes of war, peace and neutrality? In what ways have the mainstream and alternative news media changed the war reporting style, the audience-oriented verbal and visual communication strategies, and the emotion-triggering narratives?Reaching beyond the boundaries of pragmatics and discourse analysis, this book should be a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners of rhetoric, argumentation, media studies, history, social and political sciences.

Lexical Variation and Knowledge Construction across Historical, Methodological, and Cultural Ecologies provides a comprehensive examination of the intricate interplay between language and knowledge, viewing words not as mere vessels but as dynamic agents that sculpt our understanding of the world. Contributions of leading scholars from linguistics, lexicography, and related disciplines are presented in a tripartite structure —historical, methodological, and sociocultural—, illustrating how this interplay unfolds across diverse contexts, from the depths of historical lexicography to methodological innovation and sociocultural analyses of language and identity. Drawing on a wide range of data sources and analytical frameworks, its multidimensional perspective on the interaction between language and cognition makes this book a crucial resource for both scholars and learners, inviting readers to rethink the very foundations of how we communicate and understand our reality.

This book offers the first systematic investigation of the instrumental role across syntax, semantics, and language acquisition. Focusing primarily on Italian within a comparative perspective, the book addresses a long-standing puzzle: why Instruments can be syntactically omitted even when they remain semantically present.Combining theoretical analysis with experimental evidence, corpus data, and innovative methodologies, the study redefines the status of Instruments with respect to the argument-adjunct distinction and introduces a new, principled account of their syntactic omission based on semantic recoverability. It proposes a refined typology of Instruments, grounded in verb meaning and contextual factors, and tests its predictions through behavioral experiments and large-scale corpus analyses. The book also breaks new ground in acquisition research, presenting the first experimental investigation of how Italian-speaking children acquire Instruments. The results reveal a striking dissociation between early syntactic mastery and the slower development of Instrument semantic recoverability, shedding new light on the acquisition of syntactically optional elements.By integrating syntax, semantics, and acquisition, Silent Instruments provides a robust and empirically grounded framework that is readily applicable to cross-linguistic research and to other phenomena at the syntax-semantics interface. It will be of interest to linguists working on argument structure, optionality, language acquisition, and experimental and corpus-based approaches to grammar.
