Looking beyond His approaching suffering, to glory, Christ ‘steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem’ (Lk 9.51). Approximately six months later, in fulfilment of Zechariah’s prophecy, He rode triumphantly into Jerusalem upon an ass, declaring Himself to be Israel’s Messiah. This book seeks to capture, in roughly chronological order, what took place within that six month period.During this stage of the Lord’s public ministry large crowds followed Him, many professed to believe on Him and there was a growing expectation that the Kingdom of God was about to be established on earth. At the same time He faced increasingly dangerous opposition. Despite this, the Saviour persisted on His course, retaining a joyful disposition and a vibrant personal prayer life. He taught His disciples how to pray, spoke candidly to friend and foe about His approaching sufferings, warned of eternal punishment, exposed the danger of riches, explained that true greatness is self-sacrificial service for others and assured His disciples that no sacrifice they made for Him would go unrewarded. Every word which He spoke and every step He took in His journey to Jerusalem glorified God and displayed His moral excellence.

Were the old Saxon gods real? If not, where did everything come from? What really happens after death? Wulfgar the Saxon is perplexed and sudden death for him and his village seems only too likely as fierce Viking raiders are over-running his native Wessex. Even the king is being defeated atevery turn. When he least expects it, Wulfgar meets a stranger who gives him surprising answers but how will he and his friends escape when their turn comes? Painstakingly researched, the Wulfgar the Saxon books give an accurate picture of Anglo-Saxon life and how real Christian faith can flourish even in turbulent and dangerous times.Christina Eastwood's other books include The Story of God's Dealings with Our Nation, a children's history book in two volumes and Not Without Tears a biography of the Christian educational pioneer Favell Lee Mortimer. NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR THAT MIGHT BE HELPFUL EXTRA INFORMATIONI hope you enjoy this story about the days of Alfred the Great. No one called him “the Great” in those days, he was not given that title until hundreds of years later, but I have tried to show you in the story what a great king he really was. What we know about Christians and how they lived at thistime is very small but we can be sure there were some and that, just like Christians today, they had their faults as well as their strong points. Modern research1 seems to indicate that although there hadbeen some knowledge of Christianity in Britain for a very long time, in some places in Alfred's timethe Saxons had never really understood it or abandoned their pagan beliefs. Although I am only guessing, of course, it is quite possible that somewhere in Wessex in those war-torn times there was a village like Leofham where... but I must not give away too much of the story!

If you are a young person, you are at an exciting stage of life and God can do great things for you and through you. However, living as a Christian in the twenty first century takes faith, conviction and courage. Our Western World is becoming increasing secular, and people genuinely think that science has disproved the existence of God. Moreover, the message of the bible flies in the face of modern philosophies, ethics and moral standards. This means that to make headway as a Christian can feel like swimming against the tide. The topics included in this book have already been raised by young people in bible class, or in other contexts, or are related to issues which have impacted young people. Keep your bible handy as you read this book and take time to look up the references. The authors have tried to base all the advice given on God’s word. Understanding something of the Glory of God and being captivated by His son, the Lord Jesus Christ, will enable you to live a happy, purposeful life and save you from many problems and issues.

This is the third of a series, dealing with familiar Bible topics. Craig first covered The Ten Commandments and then The Nine Beatitudes. He now covers The Eight Kingdom Parables. Eight Kingdom Parables! Are we not accustomed to speaking of “The Seven Parables of the Kingdom” in Matthew 13? Craig contends that the reference to the householder at v.52 should be included, and so he speaks of eight parables. Although basically doctrinal, the book is incisive in the challenge it presents regarding our commitment to sow seed. Are we employing every avenue open to us to communicate the Word of God? Stress is laid on the fact that it is the only method whereby souls are reached for the Kingdom. Craig’s expositions and conclusions are well backed up with a multitude of Bible references that demonstrate his wide knowledge of the Scriptures, even those parts that we might regard as obscure. In his introduction, Craig suggests that each chapter of his book can be read in five minutes. We recommend that you devote just a little longer to it! If you are going to digest all that is there, and follow up on the Bible references, it will need some diligent thought. We do trust that the little volume will be really enlightening to those of you who are exploring these things for the first time, and an encouraging refresher course for those of you who have known them for many years.

The quiet path winds gently uphill through leafy forests and beside a gurgling stream. The birdsong in the trees matches the joy in your heart as you stroll along. Your backpack doesn’t feel too heavy and you’re enjoying the pleasant shade from the warm sun. Then you reach a fork in the path. You pause. Should you follow the track which runs alongside the stream? It looks pleasant, a lot like the path you’ve just been following. Or should you turn to the right? This one is narrower, rougher, and steeper. It leads out of the forest, towards the rocky, grey mountain. Both paths lead uphill, but you know that the mountain one will test you and try you. You will need to climb, to push yourself to your limit. The temperature will fluctuate between extremes of scorching heat and chilling cold. Your backpack will begin to feel like a heavy burden. The gradient may be so steep in places that you will find yourself clinging by your fingernails. But the higher you climb, the purer the air will be, and the more magnificent the view. At some point, you will haul yourself over that final ledge and find yourself in breath-taking wonder at the awesome vista before you. The arduous, gruelling, and oftentimes dangerous climb will have been worth it all. When someone asks, “Would you choose the same path if you were to do it over?” your answer will be a resounding “Yes!”The Christian life is a lot like climbing a mountain. When we trust Christ for salvation we begin on the gentle slopes.

The Bible made us “wise unto salvation” when we were sinners, and it continues to be indispensible for our spiritual development. There is no quick fix for arriving at a full understanding of its teaching; this booklet does not profess to be that. Its aim is to provide basic guidelines for Bible study for younger people or new believers. It goes out with the prayer that even those who are not naturally studious will form the habit of digging a little bit deeper, unearthing spiritual treasures to enrich their lives. In the book, the centrality of God’s Word is stressed, the reading of the Bible is encouraged, and the careful study of Scripture is promoted.Perhaps you feel that your spiritual maturity positions you beyond the need of a book like this. What about your children and grandchildren and the young people connected with the local church? Join with me in trying to put many on the road to an understanding of the Scriptures by placing this little volume in their hands.

With glorious sunsets, incredible wildlife and peace-loving people, you can almost understand why someone would leave the comforts of home and the security of successful careers, for a life in Botswana. Joy in the Desert tells the true story of a small band of devoted Christians who did just that, moved to an unknown country, with no guaranteed salary, and how God blessed them for over fifty years! This volume aims to tell the true story of how the lives of men and women, and boys and girls, in Botswana have been transformed by the power of the gospel of Christ. It has been our joy to witness God’s blessing over many years in this desert land, and it has been an honour to serve Him here. Memories fade quickly, but even if we had perfect recall, this brief record must be regarded as incomplete. While we may readily tell of what men and women have done, none of us can discern the full picture of what God has done or is doing. He often works behind the scenes. Then again, God will continue to work, long after our labours are over. This volume represents a partial record at a point in time, but the full story awaits a future day of heavenly review. The men and women whose service for the Lord is described within these pages have one thing in common: they have taken the Word of God to be their only guide. For just over 50 years they have worked unitedly, seeking to follow the practice of the early Christians, even in these challenging times. They share the conviction that the first-century principles of the early church still work today.

No wonder some dream of escaping to another planet! For many Bible readers, Ezekiel is all about the valleyof dry bones (Ezekiel 37:1-28) and the vision of God’sawesome chariot throne (Ezekiel 1:4-28, 10:1-22). Intruth, Ezekiel is much more than that and there are manylessons to be learned from this book. Ezekiel receiveda very hard call from God, but we can learn that evenin the most difficult of circumstances, God equips us tohandle the responsibility that He has given us.

The fourth book in our mini commentary series which gives an excellent outline of the book of 1 & 2 Thessalonians. There are also valuable lessons to be learned on evangelism and encouragement in relation to our hope in Christ. The handy size allows it to be easily stored, and given to young people who may not normally sit down with a larger sized commentary.

David is one of the principal characters of our Bible. HIs name is mentioned over 1000 times in Scripture, and it is the most referenced name in the Bible. In the New Testament, his name comes immediately after that of the Lord Jesus: "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David" (Matt 1.1). Interestingly, David is also the second last name in the New Testament: "I am the root and offspring of David...the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen" (Rev 22.16-21). In other words, David is a character who seems to shadow our blessed Lord, and his life is full of meaning and lessons for all believers. The emphasis of this character study is not so much in re-telling David's story, although some of that has been necessary, but rather in considering the lessons we can learn from the life of David for our lives today. Therefore, this book is devotional and practical in nature, rather than being expository. Thirteen of the titles of the 75 psalms of David share details of their settings, and these 13 psalms are all arranged chronologically in this book, after each chapter, without commentary, and after the relevant setting for each psalm has been discussed. If there is no psalm that we are aware of being written in the period under consideration, then a psalm has been selected that is relevant. It is hoped that the simple reading of the psalm in its context will prove to be a selah moment of deeper reflection upon the Word of God and appreciation of our God.

Jacob has often been propounded as a warning; Joseph as an exemplar. Despite this contrast, their lives are inextricably intertwined and have been given for our instruction and inspiration. In this commentary, two excellent Bible teachers have extracted the practical lessons and expounded them eloquently for our instruction. The sixth book in the Ritchie Character Series covers the lives of Jacob and Joseph. There are many important lessons to be learned from the accounts of Jacob and Joseph and these practical books will be of help to those wishing to study and learn from these characters.Jacob, patriarch, pilgrim, parent, Prince, and prophet: his life and history have been the theme of many sermons and books, his failures paraded before us as warnings of the “Jacob” in all of us. As we read his life we are reminded of the great principle of “sowing and reaping,” the inviolable law of God. Thankfully, there is the occasional message we are privileged to hear which shows the development in the character of a child of God through patient moulding by God, and his eventual triumphant end. As we listen with amazement to God declaring Himself “The mighty God of Jacob” (Ps 132:5), we bow in wonder and worship before a God of such amazing grace. Most view the story of Joseph as the dominant feature of Genesis, but in reality, however, the life of Joseph is really intertwined with that of Jacob. But the story of Jacob attracts us all.

Although the word ‘worship’ features extensively in Scripture, it is difficult to find a Bible verse that could be used as a definition. The general feeling is that it is more easily experienced than explained! This simple, biblical, practical and concise study by Jack Hay explains the purpose and significance of worship and goes back to the first mention of worship in our Bible. The author gives good guidance on how we should prepare for worship, and provides “case studies” of examples of acts of worship that took place in Scripture. Some chapters are devoted to explaining the institution of the Lord’s Supper and explain the reasons why we should follow this command given to us by the Lord Jesus Himself.Whilst this book is not an exhaustive study, it will be a challenge to those interested in deepening their understanding and will help reconnect to the real purpose and meaning of worship. It will also be a useful guide for new Christians.
