Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
Meeting children as equals is not only a question of pedagogical attitude. Designing Spaces for Children shows how architecture and interior design can promote childhood development. Based on historical and current concepts of progressive education, the book sketches design principles for building daycare centers and schools that can also be transferred to other spaces, such as pediatric clinics. Rooms can invite discovery; they can promote communication and social interaction, strengthen self-confidence, and be places of retreat or landscapes for play. For years, the Berlin architectural firm baukind has been creatively balancing the strict legal requirements and architectural possibilities of architecture suitable for children—always with a view to children’s needs. The book presents realized projects, such as the Kita Weltenbummler in Berlin, and aims to foster the equal involvement of children in the design of our environment.

Architectures of Weaving bridges architecture and textile by exploring fiber architectures from the micro scale of biological systems to the macro scale of textile and built structures. Selected case studies, essays, and interviews reflect on cultural practices and materials research through the lens of textile thinking. In the quest for sustainable and resilient approaches that meet the challenges of our time, the book presents fascinating approaches heralding a paradigm shift by working with fibrous materiality: structures become flexible and adaptive, they interact with their environment. As a source of inspiration, the book assembles exceptional contributions from the fields of architecture, art, material science, cultural history, design, engineering, mathematics, microbiology, and textile technology.

A persistent narrative portrays the ocean as an uninhabited space. However, centuries of commercial trade and an expanding network of infrastructures above and below the water’s surface have long challenged this view, prompting researchers to conceptualize the sea as an urbanized environment. While the sea is a global arena where architecture, ecology, infrastructure, and politics intersect, its spatial dynamics remain largely uncharted. In a time of planetary urbanization, The Ocean as Ground explores oceans as urban spaces by unveiling forgotten histories, projects, and narratives. How might we understand land urbanization starting from the oceans? Through the conceptual lens of “ground”, the book invites readers to rethink how we perceive, design, and inhabit the spaces of both land and sea.Explores the untold history of architecture’s relationship with the seaOffering a fresh perspective on offshore modernismUnderstanding land urbanization from the ocean’s point of view

What potential for design can be found in damaged or even devastated landscapes? What do we understand by a workshop for new landscapes? Building exhibitions have enjoyed a 100-year tradition in Germany. But the first Internationale Bauausstellung (IBA) to redesign a post-mining landscape creatively was implemented in Lusatia-a region much impaired by man's over-exploitation. What did the IBA give to Lusatia? What methods and processes may be applied in other regions beyond Lusatia?Ten authors explore these questions by highlighting the changes after ten years IBA in Lusatia. They look at the region from a wide range of perspectives: from inside and out, but also from the viewpoints of history, politics, culture, technology and art, and that of the people involved-local residents and planners.

In a world of cities, suburbanisation is the most visible and pervasive phenomenon. Global sprawl engulfs us but it does so in remarkably differentiated ways. While the single-family home subdivisions of North America remain the "classical case," there are now many other forms of suburbanism around the globe. The high rise housing estates around many European and Canadian cities, the belts and wedges of squatter settlements in the global south, the burgeoning megacity peripheries between Istanbul and Shanghai and the technopoles and edge cities in all corners of the world are all part of a pervasive trend towards global suburbanisms. Suburban Constellations provides a first account of this global development. Twenty-two of the most well-known global urban scholars analyse the multiple manifestations of suburbanisation and suburbanism. They are joined by artistic and illustrative contributions. Overviews of suburbanization trends in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia complete Suburban Constellations.

Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) Reflexive Design presents an integrative approach, both in theory and in practice, to the emergence and interpretation of design and research in architecture. The formative role of research-based design strategies, with regard to architectural developments from modernity to the present day, has not yet been fully recognized. At the same time, in recent years increasing importance has been accorded to discourses about design theory. At the interface of these two contexts, the contributions in the book portray the wide spectrum of creative and cultural aspects of reflexivity and reflexive design processes, as well as the potential opened up by different methods of creation and by the unexpected connections between theoretical knowledge and project ideas in architecture. With contributions by Christoph Grafe, Alban Janson, Wolfgang Jonas, Lara Schrijver, Angelika Schnell, Manuel Scholl, Ullrich Schwarz, Sophie Wolfrum und Margitta Buchert.

"The Shanghai Oriental Sports Center (SOSC) has emerged as a model project of German architecture and engineering skill" is the verdict of the renowned architecture journalist Dirk Meyhöfer in his architectural critique of the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. Inaugurated in 2011 on the occasion of the FINA World Swimming Championships, the site brings together the SOSC swimming facilities, a multipurpose venue, and a press centre, whose forms and materials harmonise as an ensemble. From an urban development perspective, its park grounds merge with their surroundings. In this volume, the SOSC is presented by the responsible architects and illuminated by means of images and plans. Dirk Meyhöfer comments on the ensemble in an extensive accompanying critique.Text in English and German.

What is the role of travel in art? The need for distance, new places, and experiences? What is the relationship between visitor and host? What is remote in the age of globalization? These were only some of the questions explored by eight curators from Europe and the Americas during the train travelling symposium Fernweh across rural Scotland. During their journeys they visited villages, towns, and art venues around the country to investigate the relationship between place, hospitality, collaboration, distance, and the urban-rural, as well as other matters. “At the core of Fernweh is a longing for an undefined, perhaps transcendent freedom, but one that may lead to critical reflection, both on oneself and also on one’s surroundings that will also return to the question of community.” (Simon Ward)

Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/english) The realization is gradually dawning in Europe that many immigrants from Muslim countries are here to stay and are seeking to be naturalized— and therefore have the right to build buildings in which to practice their religion. The current building activities frequently cause tension, also for esthetic reasons, within society well into the mosque associations. The question of how the structure and appearance of a mosque can gain acceptance by society is a subject of heated debate especially in Western Europe.14 interior architect students from RheinMain University have pursued this question and studied the traditional spatial concepts of mosques creatively. The range of ideal-typical designs shows not only the rich design potential harbored by this construction task, but also how contact between Islam and a western context could lead to a new, intercultural architecture, which reflects the reality of our living environment, without compromising commitment to tradition.

For more than 40 years, the architect and city planner Jan Gehl has been involved in redesigning or creating new designs for squares, streets, even entire city districts, for the benefit of the residents. He bases himself on insights that he has gained through many years of studying city situations in various countries. By observing megacities in detail himself, Gehl develops methods and strategies for bringing significant positive change to dysfunctional and inhospitable urban landscapes. This takes account of demographic developments, changing lifestyles, and design processes. The most important principle behind Jan Gehl’s urban planning on a human scale is that the urban space has to be experienced at the speed of a pedestrian, instead of from a vehicle. This is the only way to succeed in making both traditional metropolises and rapidly growing cities in developing and emerging countries into cities for people. The book presents Jan Gehl’s work in the area of new buildings, as well as the redesign of urban spaces and streets. Presentations of his planning models through text and images, as well as of his planning principles and methods, illuminate how vibrant, safe, sustainable, and healthy cities can be created in future.

Landscape architecture can be more than aesthetically innovative: it can contribute to integration in society, social stability, and a vibrant public life. But how does a park become an intensively used stage, a well-visited everyday location? What constitutes the “boon of life” (Jane Jacobs)? And what makes a park urban? The Park am Gleisdreieck in Berlin—developed between 2007 and 2014—was initiated by citizens and built in dialogue with them. This publication presents the principles underlying its design. They form a toolbox for big city parks that can be used in diverse ways, stimulate interaction, and appeal to the senses. Furthermore, the book situates the park within the contemporary work of landscape architecture and shows how visitors perceive the park and its atmospheres. Overall, this work lays out the design elements that model a successful citizens’ park in the twenty-first century: Many voices have contributed to its development; its design is dynamically complex, and the park invites change and appropriation.

Housing is a basic need that, for many all over the world, remains unmet or inadequate. In order to ensure the availability of quality living space for everyone, architecture and urban development can contribute significantly to finding new solutions. The challenge of affordable housing lies in achieving an optimum relationship between costs and the "home quality" value. In light of this and based on examples of exceptional residential buildings, this book presents not only theoretical approaches but also strategies for creating affordable living spaces. These strategies can be compared by analyzing projects in their economic, social, and urban development contexts.

The classical representative-democratic system that guarantees everyone the opportunity to participate has been coming under pressure. It raises the question as to how the interests of citizens in relation to urban development issues can be represented more strongly once again in democratic negotiation and decision-making processes. The premise of this book that promotes debate is that great potential lies in the group of "intermediary" parties, which have multiplied and developed in recent years. Intermediaries as mediators, doers and protesters no longer represent the transfer between a "systematic world" and a "living environment", but also network-like coproduction and new forms of regulation and control between communities, the economy and civil society. Contrary to what is usual, this book does not examine the local democracy for "system shortcomings", but asks the question of how cooperations between a wide range of parties can succeed well at the interface between government and governance.

Once again time is running out: housing is needed quickly, a lot of it, and at affordable rental prices. However, what is the basis for realizing this vast housing construction program? Continuing as before, in accordance with the web of regulations of DIN norms and with the classical residential typologies of "single" and "small family"?It is time for a change of perspective. With the New Standards, ten architects plead the case for the opportunity to discuss quality, rather than the supposed safety of technical standards. New Standards stands for housing that focuses on the essential and that is rich in atmosphere, for residences that are compact and have adaptable spatial structures. This volume addresses how housing can remain affordable, how people can participate in the evolution of their city, as well as density as an opportunity for urban life.

What lies at the root of Japanese creativity and its architectural artefacts? In his new book, the Japanese architect Yuichiro Edagwa explores this question in detail. By analysing a wide variety of unique exemplary buildings from the sixth century to the present, he determines twelve distinctive characteristics of Japanese architectural creativity and composition, including: intimacy with nature, importance of materials, bipolarity and diversity, asymmetry, devotion to small space, and organic form. The key understanding which pervades all these characteristics is that 'parts precede the whole'. The Japanese process of creation begins with designing parts and details and ends with combining them to one edifice, instead of starting with a whole structure and working out the components afterwards. With Japanese Creativity - Contemplations on Japanese Architecture Edagawa provides a personal and comprehensive understanding of Japanese creativity and the architectural process. The book gives us an inspiring insight into Japanese culture and identity, which in its essence is deeply traditional and modern at the same time.

This unique collection of essays explores the botanical dimensions of urban space, ranging from scientific efforts to understand the distinctive dynamics of urban flora to the way spontaneous vegetation has inspired artists and writers. The book comprises five thematic sections: histories and taxonomies, botanising the asphalt, the art of urban flora, experiments in non-design, and cartographic imaginations. The essays explore developments in Berlin, London, Lahore, and many other cities, as well as more philosophical reflections on the meaning of urban nature under the putative shift to the Anthropocene.

Monuments have fascinated human beings and enriched cities as keepers of memories and history, as places to spend time, as meeting points, and as points of orientation through various times and in various forms. However, as a major component of the discipline of architecture and urban design, the term monument and its relation to the city are in crisis. This book explores a rediscovery of the concept of monuments as essential and creative parts of cities. Based on the re-reading of four powerful urban interplays in Sao Paulo, the concept of 'Monuments of Everyday Life' is outlined, revealing specific spatial patterns that are understood as alternatives to places of instability, commercialisation and homogenisation of urban space. These interplays are relevant as reference points of collective life and material representatives of collective values. Monuments of Everyday Life draws conclusions from the past, but also addresses relevant questions and potentials for urban futures.

Contemporary cities are in thrall to rocketing real estate prices, climate change, and relentless growth. Make City brings together highly diverse positions on urban change: architects, urban planners, municipal decision-makers, landscape designers, makers, and civic entrepreneurs. Key juxtapositions shed new light on the strategies and coalitions needed for city making: new social contracts are forged at every level of urban life. The circular economy begins in cities. Local production - of food, materials, and spaces - is at the heart of urban life cycles, overcoming the current patterns of planned obsolescence that govern our linear economic system. Make City lays out urban alternatives for new architecture, typologies, material flows, and integrative and community-based planning, all grounded in the notions of reusing, densifying, and optimising existing structures. By exploring projects and propositions for making city differently, the what if gives way to the how.Contributors include AFF Architects, Anupama Kundoo, Michel Bouwens/P2P Foundation, Francesca Bria SESC, Tessy Britton, Bureau SLA, Frauke Burgdorff, Marco Casagrande, Deadline, Eva de Klerk, De Urbanisten, FAR frohn&rojas, Kraftwerk 1, Wolf Lotter, PPAG, Refunc, Eike Roswag-Klinge, Tina Saaby, Florian Schmidt, Topotek 1, Jean Philipp Vassal, Vestas, Zanderroth Architekten.Text in English and German.

What is “good” architecture? This seemingly simple question is connected to a wide range of criteria—just like the radical quest for “good” food, which has produced a wealth of insights over the past few decades. This book showcases buildings based on simple technology, good craftsmanship, and careful choice of local and natural materials, as well as local development initiatives which demonstrate excellence in building quality, landscape restoration, and community revitalization. The selection of case studies is broad and definitely unconventional: it encompasses Europe and Japan, and privileges lesser-known authors, unobtrusive works, and marginal localities where radically fresh attitudes have been able to develop.

Urban Design Methods is a manual for reconciling contemporary approaches with increasingly complex demands in the shaping of urban living spaces. Architects and landscape architects, as well as city, regional, and landscape planners, often find that they are unable to do modern projects justice with their specialist skills alone. Cooperative approaches are needed to deal with both the complexity of raising questions and the growing number of affected parties who need to be involved. Urban design—understood as an inter- and transdisciplinary field at the interface of architecture, city and regional planning, landscape architecture, sociology, and the diverse stakeholders involved in any project—requires a compendium of adaptable methods to dissolve the boundaries between theory and praxis and between natural and social systems. For the first time, this book collects a broad spectrum of methods intended to support urban designers in deciphering the contexts in which they work, and help them attain a greater individual professional understanding. It clearly outlines the range of challenges and the constantly evolving areas of activity.

Tokyo's seemingly endless sea of buildings has grown incrementally over the past centuries, leading to an urban condition that is both coherent and contradictory at the same time. The understanding of Tokyo as a continuous and interdependent urban complex is a much-neglected perspective in previous readings of the city. An attachment to the land, strong civic commitment, and a deep appreciation of the immaterial has produced a nested megastructure of smaller communities. These places have all evolved in a related way, briefly and temporarily disrupted by earthquakes and a devastating war. Over time, a set of distinct urban patterns emerged through centralisation processes, the "manshon urbanisation", the relocation of various types of manufacturing, and other developments. What might appear homogeneous in composition and rhythm is in fact a configuration of distinctly different spaces, created by the routines of everyday life that make the district of Shinjuku different from Shimokitazawa or Kitamoto. This book not only provides the first comprehensive reading of the many urbanisation processes shaping Tokyo today, but also seeks an entirely new approach for looking at megacity regions: through their differences, and the way those differences are produced in the course of everyday life.

As much as space and movement have been objects of debate and analysis in architectural theory, they have also long been driving forces in the field of architectural design. In 2016, the Raummaschine - a kinetic installation and experimental setup presented at the Gropius Bau in Berlin - took space and movement as starting points for exploring the relationships between body, space, and architecture. 384 motor-driven vertically hanging ball chains created changing spatial compositions, with visitors able to alter the space simply by moving their finger on a touchpad.Raummaschine - Exploring the Manifold Spaces provides a biography of a spatial installation at the Gopius Bau in Berlin and an introduction to the theoretical discussions surrounding it, including contributions from, amongst others, the fields of architecture, art history, sociology, and design.

Roadside 'weeds' and other routinely overlooked aspects of urban nature provide a fascinating glimpse into the complex global ecologies and new cultures of nature emerging across the world.
