With attention to the methodological questions that arise from the attempt to study such changes empirically, it offers new theoretical foundations for understanding the social construction and reconstruction of spaces through communicative action. Seeing communicative action as the basic element in the social construction of reality and conceptualizing communication not only in terms of the use of language and texts, but as involving any kind of objectification, such as technologies, bodies and non-verbal signs, it considers the roles of both direct and mediatized (or digitized) communication. An examination of the conceptualization of the communicative (re-)construction of spaces and the means by which this change might be empirically investigated, this book demonstrates the fruitfulness of the notion of refiguration as a means by which to understand the transformation of contemporary societies. As such, it will appeal to sociologists, social theorists, and geographers with interests in social construction and urban space.

This book examines the concept of quality from a social perspective. Using the example of public spaces, it demonstrates the analytical and practical benefits that can be gained from an experience-based approach to defining quality.Sociology and related social sciences have rarely explored the quality of spaces, despite qualities being social products. This has led to a clear research gap in understanding spatial quality within social theory. Addressing this gap, this book examines public space quality through a cultural-spatial lens, accounting for the complexity of polycontexturalization, which implies the increasing entanglement of social actions in multiple contexts and spatialities, as well as the materiality of spatial arrangements. Moreover, it introduces the sociologically useful distinction between Erfahrung (reflective experience) and Erlebnis (lived experience) into the analysis of spatial quality. The book’s concept is based on the idea that social experience comprises multiple logics. It is shown that the quality of public space is driven by three distinct logics: The logic of expression, evident in individuals’ drive for social integration; the logic of strategy, viewing public space as a competitive arena; and finally, the logic of subjectivation, which examines how spaces shape subjectivities and are subject to refiguration.The book targets both researchers and students in sociology, anthropology, political science, architecture, and urban planning. Löw’s guiding principle is the assumption that space emerges in the interplay between objects, structures and actions. Based on a critical discussion of classic theories of space, Löw develops a new dynamic theory of space that accounts for the relational context in which space is constituted. Es werden umfangreiche Verweise und weiterführende Literatur benannt. Inhaltlich und personell wird auf diese Weise mit einem umfassenden, interdisziplinären Forschungsgebiet vertraut gemacht.

Die empirische Analyse und die theoretische Bearbeitung von geschlechtsspezifischen Machtverhältnissen ist zurückgegangen. Allerdings sind nicht die Gegenstände der Analyse verschwunden, sondern die Benennung in Machtkategorien. Der Band will vor diesem Hintergrund die Machtlage im Geschlechterverhältnis noch einmal grundsätzlich zum Gegenstand machen.

Vorwort Nina Baur, Hermann Korte, Martina Löw, Markus Schroer Am Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts benutzte Auguste Comte (1798 – 1857) zum ersten Mal den Begriff „Soziologie“ für eine neue Sichtweise auf gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen. Es war eine Sichtweise, die sich weniger an metaphysischen Erklärungen orientierte, sondern sich um soziale Kriterien für die Beschreibung und Erklärungen von gesellschaftlichen Zuständen und Prozessen bemühte. Comte war der Auffassung, dass diese neue Wiss- schaft in der Lage sein solle, sich zu aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Problemen zu äußern. Am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts steht vor allem das Werk Emile Durkheims (1858 – 1917) für den Versuch, die Soziologie als eine Wissenschaft zu begründen, die sich mit ihren Fragestellungen und theoretischen Antworten abgrenzt von benachbarten Disziplinen wie Psychologie, Geschichte, Pädagogik oder Nationalökonomie, indem sie soziale Reali- ten unabhängig von den einzelnen Individuen zu interpretieren versucht. Spätestens seit dieser Zeit stellen sich zentrale Fragen der Theoriebildung immer w- der neu: Fragen nach dem Verhältnis von Individuum und Gesellschaft, Fragen nach dem wechselseitigen Einfluss gesellschaftlicher Strukturen und des Handelns von Menschen sowie Fragen nach angemessenen Regeln der empirischen Sozialforschung, seien es nun quantitative oder qualitative Methoden. Bis heute zeichnet sich das Fach Soziologie gerade dadurch aus, dass es keine einhe- liche, allgemein gültige Antwort auf diese Fragen gefunden hat. Vielmehr stehen sich Handlungstheorien auf der einen und Struktur- bzw. Systemtheorien auf der anderen Seite scheinbar ebenso unversöhnlich gegenüber wie quantitative und qualitative Methoden.

Martina Löw, Dorothee Meister, Uwe Sander Pädagogik zwischen Kontinuität und Wandel Dieser Sammelband greift mit seinem Titel die alltagssprachliche Metapher des 'Umbruchs' auf, mit der für die neuen Bundesländer seit 1990 in vielen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen eine normative Zielvorgabe gesellschaftlicher Veränderungen verbunden ist: der Wechsel ehemaliger DDR-Verhältnisse in bundesrepublikanische Verhältnisse. Erwartet und im Wort des 'Umbruchs' verankert wird ein radikaler Wechsel aller gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse -und zwar kein langsamer, ausgehandelter Prozeß einer beid­ seitiger Annäherung, sondern eine einseitige Anpassung. Für sensible ge­ sellschaftliche Bereiche, zu denen die Pädagogik als Theorie und Praxis der Bildung, Qualifikation und Erziehung gehört, gilt dieser Anspruch beson­ ders. Mehr oder minder ausdrücklich werden pädagogische Felder als Ob­ jekt und als Medium des 'Umbruchs' behandelt. An die systematische Bil­ dung und Erziehung werden in besonderer Art ideologische und inhaltliche Umorientierungen herangetragen: Zum einen muß eine DDR-Pädagogik in eine BRD-Pädagogik transformiert werden, und zum anderen bekommt diese neue BRD-Pädagogik die Aufgabe, Umbruchprozesse in anderen ge­ sellschaftlichen Bereichen (im Bereich der Arbeit, der Freizeit und des So­ zialen) zu befördern und zu unterstützen. Und tatsächlich setzt nach 1990 in den neuen Bundesländern ein rasanter Prozeß der gesellschaftlichen Veränderung ein, dessen Ausmaß gewohnte Vorstellungen sozialer Dynamik bei weitem übertrifft. In kürzester Zeit än­ dern sich die politischen, rechtlichen und wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedin­ gungen. Rechtliche Grundlagen, Organisationen und institutionelle Struktu­ ren werden ausgetauscht.

Erfahrungen mit den neuen Kommunikationstechnologien haben die theoretischen Annahmen über Raum und Zeit grundlegend irritiert. Das Internet wird zum expliziten Focus der mittlerweile avancierten Raum- und Zeittheorien. In diesem Buch wird dokumentiert, welche Perspektiven sich auf elektronische Netze und Kommunikationstechnologien öffnen, wenn handlungs- oder systemtheoretische Raum- bzw. Zeitbegriffe herangezogen werden, wenn also Raum und Zeit als Struktur-Handlungs-Elemente bzw. als kommunikative Erzeugnissen gelten.
