The region's festivals, music, poetry and popular religious rituals have attracted increasing interest from around he world in recent decades, and the woodcuts that are the subject of this book are one of the most striking expressions of that cultural dynamism. They have been a significant art form in Brazil since the 1940s, when they began to be produced in large quantities as illustrations for the covers of cheap pamphlets of poetry sold in streets and markets throughout the North East, where they were known as Literatura de Cordel or 'string literature' - so-called because the pamphlets were frequently displayed on cords hung between posts. This work, the first detailed study of Brazilian woodcut prints in the English language deals with the origins and development of the art form, its themes, the traditions and culture of the Brazilian North East, social and political issues, humour and satire, all lavishly illustrated. As this superb study shows, the Brazilian woodcut print has all the power, quickness and wit of a great popular art.

The term 'Islamic cities' has been used to refer to cities of the Islamic world, centring on the Middle East. Academic scholarship has tended to link the cities of the Islamic world with Islam as a religion and culture, in an attempt to understand them as a whole in a unified and homogenous way.Examining studies (books, articles, maps, bibliographies) of cities which existed in the Middle East and Central Asia in the period from the rise of Islam to the beginning of the 20th century, this book seeks to examine and compare Islamic cities in their diversity of climate, landscape, population and historical background.Coordinating research undertaken since the nineteenth century, and comparing the historiography of the Maghrib, Mashriq, Turkey, Iran and Central Asia, Islamic Urbanism provides a fresh perspective on issues that have exercised academic concern in urban studies and highlights avenues for future research.

However, when it first started it was available only to a very few people who had the money and determination to indulge in this activity. Then as now, each photograph is a reflection of the interests and tastes of the photographer, be he amateur or professional. The present book is not just a collection o f photographs but rather an illustrated historical record. In other words it is a chronicle which is brought dramatically to life by the photographs. As its title indicates the book deals with a region about which very little was known in the West during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. It covers the region not only geographically but also sociologically and over a fairly long period of time. It spans the region from the heart of Arabia, through Western Arabia (Jeddah, Mecca and Medina), Yemen, Oman and the Gulf. It depicts the life of the Arab, not only rulers but also the ordinary people in their daily activities. These photographs also show the changes which have taken place over the period from 1880 to 1950, giving the reader an opportunity to link the past with the present.

Arabic linguists may be defined as: the scientific investigation and study of the Arabic language in all its aspects. This embraces the descriptive, comparative and historical aspects of the language. It also concerns itself with the classical form as well as the Modern and contemporary standard forms and their dialects. Moreover, it attempts to study the language in the appropriate regional, social and cultural settings. It is hoped that the Series will devote itself to all issues of Arabic linguistics in all its manifestations on both the theoretical and applied levels. The results of these studies will also be of use in the field of linguistics in general, as well as related subjects. Monograph 3 looks at North East Arabian Dialects.

The volume Cyclical Time and Ismaili Gnosis brings together in English translation three of Henry Corbin's richest and most complex studies, originally presented at the Eranos conferences of 1951 and 1954 and another conference in 1956. Each of these three relatively early studies is built around a complex, highly creative 'comparison' of the phenomenological correspondences between texts (often highly fragmentary) from a vast range of spiritual traditions from late Antiquity (including Manichaenism and the sects of Sassanid Iran) - all 'gnostic' in the root Greek sense of that term favoured by Corbin, though not in the narrower historical sense used by most contemporary scholars - and comparable spiritual themes in an equally wide range of Islamic texts eventually preserved in the later Ismaili Shi'i tradition.
