"This well-researched and clearly-written book documents the experiences of Black Francophones hailing from Sub-Saharan Africa and living in the predominantly anglophone province of Alberta. Drawing on the qualitative analysis of numerous documents and semi-structured interviews, the book explores how the participants construct multiple identities based on language, race, and citizenship while fighting racism and the multiple forms of exclusion they face. Blackness and la Francophonie is essential reading for scholars and informed readers interested in identity formation, anti-racism, and/or the politics on language in Canada."Daniel Béland, Professor & Director of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada, McGill University

Women, people with disabilities and LGBTQ2+ people are more present on the sports scene, but important transformations are still needed in organizations so that these people are better represented and included in all sports disciplines. This book, which is the result of a research project conducted with sports organization managers, coaches, athletes, experts and other stakeholders in the field, proposes concrete solutions for sport organizations. Throughout the book we propose and explain good practices in the area of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). Together with numerous testimonials and examples from the field, these practices adapted to the sport environment make it possible to overcome the barriers that prevent women and people from historically marginalized groups from participating in sport and from reaching leadership positions within these organizations. The practices presented in this book are based on an analytical framework for inclusion in organizations that can be applied beyond the Quebec and Canadian context.

This book won't offer tips for adding luster to a research advisor's C.V., nor is it a guide for torturing students. Instead, it offers reflections about how an advisor relationship can support students in learning scientific writing. It was written by two professors who, while at times embodying all of the caricatures depicted on the cover of this book, have won awards for the quality of their mentorship and been invited to take leadership of doctoral programs. With their combined experiences of supervising more than 50 graduate students, not to mention five years of venting around the coffee machine, and a dash of humour, this book brings together the very best of their expertise.

This collection of urban studies research and interpretation crosses the country from Quebec to B.C., comparing trends and perspectives over the past decade and across and beyond disciplines. Core questions of research, policy and practice facing Montreal and Vancouver—those featuring housing and transportation, in particular—are featured in terms of new and innovative directions. Emerging questions—about urban indigeneity, food systems, climate action—are broached in challenging ways. The twenty authors whose original work is compiled here demonstrate the scope for continued, critical, comparative conversation across francophone and anglophone divides. The book offers a significant resource for understanding the intersecting field and practice of urban studies in Quebec and in B.C. and for spurring its further evolution. A French version of this book is also available.

In 2010, Correctional Service Canada closed two decrepit prisons designated for men. Hoping to reduce prison overcrowding, the Québec government rented one of them—the Leclerc prison—and transferred approximately 250 male prisoners serving a provincial sentence. One year later, Québec closed its main provincial prison designated for women, and swiftly transferred the women to the Leclerc prison where men were housed. At Leclerc, women endured dehumanizing conditions condemned by scholars, advocacy groups, and the media as violations of basic human rights. Challenging living conditions enduring at the Leclerc prison suggest that women's imprisonment is resisting significant change despite studies and governmental inquiries since the middle of the 19th century having documented the dire situation, and the specific needs of imprisoned women in Canada. This book proposes a critical rereading of women's penal history in Canada and argues that policies and practices regarding women's prisoning are path dependent and tend to follow a locked-in trajectory.

This collective book is part of the work of the Abeona-ENS-OBVIA Chair in Social Justice and Artificial Intelligence. It proposes a multidisciplinary reflection on the challenges posed by the uses of artificial intelligence, above all from a social justice perspective. The concept of social justice allows to include dimensions that are not traditionally associated with artificial intelligence technologies, and which are primarily addressed by the social sciences and humanities. This makes it possible to comprehend dimensions such as justice and equity, but also solidarity and dignity; these dimensions constitute powerful tools for social change when mobilized by different actors. The contributions in this book highlight reflections on the definition of societal conditions and avenues of action for artificial intelligence technologies deployment in respect for human societies.

Integrating environmental considerations into public contracts is now largely possible, enabling public purchasers to become real players in the fight against the ecological emergency and to influence the practices and behaviour of economic operators. However, major difficulties remain and, in practice, environmental aspects are often not implemented to any great extent. The aim of this book is to highlight and understand the practical obstacles preventing a genuine environmentalization of public procurement. Starting with the regulations in force in Canada, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland, the research then focuses, through field surveys, on the various national obstacles preventing the development of green public procurement.

The aging of the world's population has brought with it a set of challenges. Baby boomers in the Western world, who have lived through several cycles of change, are about to experience another transformation — the automation of in-home geriatric care. Equipping a home with interconnected gadgets and with robots that incorporate artificial intelligence seems increasingly possible. Such devices, connected to a wireless network and the Internet, can observe, communicate, and also assist caregivers, providing support to an elderly person as they age in their own home. These technologies have the potential to improve care for those suffering from various maladies, including dementia. Seniors may be more accepting of robots and gadgets if such devices enable them to remain in their home despite deficits related to aging. However, as bioethics has often demonstrated, it is important to critically analyze the implications of using these devices, as is proposed in this book.

The Etchemins/Amaliseet/Maliseet/Wolastoqiyik were the first—along with the Montagnais/Innu and the Algonquin/Anishinabe—to sign treaties of alliance with the French between 1603 and 1605. These treaties were motivated by the French policy of making and maintaining alliances with the Indigenous Peoples in New France to claim control over the territory and to stimulate immigration, trade, and the expansion of the colony. In 1869, following the loss of the Viger reserve lands to European settler-farmers, the Wolastoqiyik Nation was rendered scattered and forgotten. It was not until 1987, following formal recognition by both the federal and provincial governments, that the Nation was reborn. The History of the Wolastoqiyik First Nation focuses on the socio-political evolution of nation-members from their first contact with Europeans until today. It demonstrates the ongoing resilience of the Wolastoqiyik Nation in the face of colonialism. Today, access to its territory, cultural reappropriation, and the development of economic and political autonomy are challenges that must be met to ensure the Nation's continuity for generations to come. Knowing its history and making it accessible to both members and the non-Indigenous population is an important step toward ensuring the continual recognition of the Wolastoqiyik Nation.

The diversity of disciplines and topics explored in this book, together with the range of authors from every corner of the globe, bear witness to and show the influence of the theological, academic, and ecclesiastical contributions of Professor Gilles Routhier, dean emeritus of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies of Université Laval, and Superior General of the Seminary of Quebec.Gilles Routhier is among the contemporary proponents of a scholarly theology that seeks to reflect on a faith rooted in, and in dialogue with, the culture of its time, particularly intellectual culture. In this way, he unequivocally embodies the model of a scholar. His work, with its sensitivity to the universal character of the Church, and to the global dimension of intellectual and academic work, has been disseminated on every continent. En cela, il correspond indéniablement au modèle authentique du scholar. Très sensible au caractère universel de l'Église et à la dimension internationale du travail intellectuel et universitaire, il a vu ses travaux être diffusés sur tous les continents. This is the English edition of Voix, visages, paysages. During the 2015 election, the Liberal Party of Justin Trudeau promised to make real change in the lives of all Canadians. On the eve of the next election, Assessing Justin Trudeau's Liberal Government provides a rigorous and impartial assessment of how the government has delivered on its campaign promises.Under the direction of Lisa Birch and François Pétry, twenty renowned academics investigate the fate of the 353 liberal campaign promises in fields as varied as international relations, energy and sustainable development, the economy, Indigenous Reconciliation, and the legalization of recreational cannabis. Collaborators draw from a common set of documentary sources and rely on a common method to analyze and contextualize their pledge fulfillment verdicts. Contrary to the popular belief that politicians make empty promises, it appears that the Liberals in power have fulfilled, at least in part, the vast majority of their promises. The book concludes with a reflection on the relevance and meaning of campaign promises for Canadian democracy. In particular, it ponders the paradox that fulfilling campaign promises does not necessarily create a sense of enthusiasm among voters.
