Small Talk gathers poems from Peter Sears's eight previous collections, and adds thirty entirely new poems. The many admirers of his poetry will be delighted to find so many old friends back in print and under a single cover.Eclectic, comic, disarming, deadly, and ever fresh and surprising, these poems offer a feast of necessary delights.

Tough, direct, filled with sweetness and immaculate detail, the poems in Open Heart do what only the best poems do, they link the reader with previously unsuspected aspects of his or her own sensibility. They remind us what life has been like for the post-war generation in America, and they show us where hope, laughter, and genuine feeling abide.

Body Turn to Rain brings together work from Robbins' five previous collections, plus forty new poems that continue his wise meditation upon the American experience in this time, with all its variation, expanse, history, clownishness, beauty, and uncertainty. The book represents a way station in the life work of a thoughtful and finely tuned sensibility such as come among us all too rarely. And it is comprised of poems that walk out to meet you as though you were a friend.

The poems in this volume bring us a taste of Peter Sears' unique range of sensibility. Entertaining, somberly hilarious, exquisite and filled with refreshment, these are poems for all seasons, reasons, purposes, and tastes. This small book is a treasure.

The action of this novel takes place in the West, but it is not a "Western"; and though its central focus is the life of Adaline Carson, daughter of the famed frontiersman Kit Carson, it is also not a biography. Set in the time of the California gold rush, it is a detailed and graphic elegy for America's wide-open plains, rivers, and mountains and the people who lived in and passed through them, for both good and ill.The Appointment is a clear-eyed vision of how greed, love, frontier mastery and the beset Native tribes contended for control of this stupendous immensity, and how one young woman and her father were taken up in the resulting maelstrom that has become our history.

The poems in The Lord of Everywhere are about strength and courage and the will to hold on, about home and homelessness, and the tension that floats like Emily's feather between knowing what home means and finding our true home. These poems praise those caught between glaciers of clarity and wildfires of cruelty, those who take that "new step", which Dostoevsky called our greatest fear. These poems honour those who make their way home each day, together or alone, and who still believe, somehow, inexplicably, almost wordlessly, in love that endures, even in the flames.

Mother Water centres on maternal inheritance in literal and figurative forms. Through its water motif, the book traces the speaker's transformations as she absorbs, and often resists, lessons from the women who guide her.The poems explore the speaker's sense of self through feminine genealogy and her mother's voice, the mother figure becoming simultaneously nurturing and threatening, teaching her daughter to survive in a perilous world. Coming-of-age poems are here, too, and poems exploring gender mystique, balance, relationship, and understanding. The book's last section considers how we are altered by loss and how that alteration challenges our notions of both individual subjectivity and bodily autonomy.

By means of exceptionally concrete and direct language, Laura Stott's poems lift dark matter up out of the shared unknown and give it shape. They have the simplicity of blue shadows and bells, the curiously beautiful postures of shore birds in a marsh. This is a book of clear-eyed and original work. Neither the poems nor the stunning images that accompany them melt away as you read - they keep reminding that mystery inheres not in abstract complexities but in the essential experience of our inner lives as they encounter and create the world.

These are poems of the garden and house, of dreams lost and fulfilled, and of children and struggle and love. They are poems that occur at the exact point where the inner life and the daily world meet and initiate the dance that is one person's experience of living.

Philip Levine is one of the foremost poets of the last fifty years, but moreover he is a master and unparalleled practitioner of the long poem in our time. No recent poet has written as many exceptional long poems as Levine, and his influence has continued virtually undisturbed since his death in 2015.In this new anthology, twenty-one prominent American poets testify to Levine's immense importance and his singular mastery of the long poem's many forms, offering an important discussion of the signature form of one of the great poets of the English language. Contributors include Kelly Cherry, Kate Daniels, Peter Everwine, Kathy Fagan, Christopher Howell, Richard Jackson, Mark Jarman, Dorianne Laux, Paul Mariani, and many more.

In Every Waking Moment, James Crews plumbs his past and family life for insights, yet always returns to the moment at hand, approaching the world with mindfulness, openness, and clarity. He finds the miraculous in a shaft of sunlight while waiting for the subway, in an eagle glimpsed from a train along the Hudson, or in the fields of sweet corn surrounding his house.Crews reminds us over and over in this meditative new collection: "You must / put yourself in the path of joy / to find it."

Born of hours spent watching and listening to the testimonies of Polish Holocaust survivors and those who came to their aid, these poems by noted Polish poet Piotr Florczyk document the unspeakable evil unleashed by the Nazis in Poland, while also interrogating the very concept of memory literature. With fewer and fewer Holocaust survivors living among us each year,From the Annals of Kraków retells their stories of persecution, perseverance, and luck so they will continue to be heard and will keep alive the memory of survivors' suffering and bravery.

Winner of the Blue Lynx Prize for Poetry"Sophisticated and cerebral gymnastics of language sway with gravity through the poems and poetic sequences of Explain This Corpse. Throughout, Kirsten Kaschock's gestures are contemporary, jagged, and stop-start, wonderfully torqued and rippling with unexpected flights, breaks, and drops. After centuries of literary glamourizing of young, dead heroines, this poet declares a preference for survival, including its inevitable toll of aging, toward a more practical and elemental transcendence. These poems show us an extension and evolution of the legacy of Hopkins and Berryman - a sort of sprung verse for the twenty-first century, an urgent engagement with the world so obliquely signaled here." - Carolyne Wright, final judge, Blue Lynx Prize 2019

A lyrical exploration of the dysphoria of our current social reality, Drunken Man on a Bicycle focuses on the intersection between personal and communal experience as authoritarian national leadership overwhelms the individual consciousness. These poems capture the atmosphere of the absurd and the horrific, the preposterous and the historic, and dramatise how our interior life shifts between cartoon and film, dream and tragedy, anxiety and the actual policies enacted in the shared world. They give voice to the paradoxical unity of the mad and the elegiac and enact our collective entry into the banality of a drunk on a bicycle as he pursues understanding at this perilous moment in the history of civilisation.

"Christina de Villier's Long Coordinates is an old-time book of mountain tunes, of blues, of songs sung by a soul deeply enmeshed in place and trying to reckon love and all its complications. The language here is keen-edged and playful, breathtaking at times, and de Villier's sharp, even gaze lights in one moment on 'rare pears' and 'the golden mare drink[ing] / from a trough,' then 'styrofoam & leafblowers & greed & sports / utility vehicles & traps & rape & drones' the next.

Winner of the 2020 Blue Lynx Prize for PoetryIn The Present State of the Garden, both childhood and the natural world are elegized as the speaker works through layers of loss: the dissolution of a marriage and a world on the brink of ecological collapse. She attempts to patch together some kind of new Eden in these aftermaths and to make a home and family from the remnants - memories from girlhood, a stray aunt and a niece, and what's left of her small, once lush garden after the punishing storms of summer. The Present State of the Garden is a clear-eyed, open-hearted poetic memoir.

Van Winckel's poems hover at the intersections of folktale and history, of past life regressions and future life visions, in a voice that is intimate, eerie, wry, and always strangely like a voice that has been going on in our heads without our noticing. The chill and pleasure it renders is a little like what one feels upon first reading Proust.

For five decades Albert Goldbarth has been astonishing readers with the erudition, wit, lyric invention, wisdom, and depthless humanity of his prolific writing. He has won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry twice and has been awarded the Mark Twain Prize for humour in poetry, the Chad Walsh Poetry Prize, fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and other honours. He mixes complex ideas, wildly dissimilar objects and facts, detailed descriptions, striking lyricism, puns, coinages, and jargons. In his review in Slant, Eric McHenry wrote, "in spite of this omnivorousness, the poems aren't just big maximalist messes. Synthesis is Goldbarth's goal and his gift".

John Witte's latest addition to the Pacific NW Poetry Series consists of poems both flowing and tense, both wry and brimming with feeling, continuously refreshing, alive in every syllable, and deeply felt.

Traverse is a book that seems to have all of Earth in mind, all its places and creatures, not as sentimental other but companions. Craft's poems are certain, his language a landscape of its own--hard, pressured, and flecked like sedimentary rock--that occasionally upends the reader as a form of tectonics. The poems take the reader into them and explore life's traversals--its changes, uncertainties, losses--as simultaneously exceptional and mundane. They seek, it seems, to reunite with Earth, burrowing in rather than away.

Lady Wing Shot is an exploration of the life of famed sharpshooter Annie Oakley, who was called both the "Peerless Lady Wing Shot" and "Little Sure Shot," a name given to her by Sitting Bull. The collection illuminates the woman behind the mask of fame and connects her to both her own historical context and the present by exploring how her exploits challenged notions of femininity, white supremacy, and American gun culture.

Abiding Time, Robert McNamara's fourth collection of poems, features a clear, direct and considered voice reminiscent, at times, of Herrick and Marvel, but fully contemporary. In poem after poem attention, reflection, and a sweeping, multi-faceted faith emerge as ingredients without which the individual life cannot be either fully known or lived. This book is a real contribution to the meditative tradition in American poetry.

These poems are set in, or arise from, the past but, with Goldbarth's characteristic precision, insight, and narrative intelligence, springboard into a conjunction of thought and heart that reminds readers that the core of being human has never changed. Against an era and a society that prostrates itself before technology, this book calls readers to remember Eternity--capital intended--and "believes we can't be done with lingering about, and perhaps learning from, what's come before.

John Hodgen's What We May Be is a cry of love and pain (and he makes them almost indistinguishable) on behalf of the human race, its history, its future, its lovely possibilities that seem always out of reach. The poems of this award-winning poet declare again and again that the reaching itself defines the best in us, and he is cheering us on.

This volume brings together pieces from David Axelrod's previous nine collections along with thirty-two brilliant new poems--the whole a kind of symphonic effort to clarify the unity of consciousness, water, wind, and stone--all life, in fact, and the planet itself. These poems are powerful meditations. To read them is to enter into an act of praise driven by intelligence and an unfailingly accurate ear for what might be called the melody of meaning.

These are lyrical and exact poems of mother love, suffering, and exaltation. Their precision and emotional clarity provide an intimate and ultimately transcendent experience rarely attained through poetry.

Traverse, Craft's third collection, picks up where Vagrants & Accidentals left off, exploring the music, the miscues, the hidden forces and quirks of circumstance that constitute a human life, shape us into the people we become. It's a book of family origins and discovery, an adoptee's journey toward self-knowledge, a son's journey toward becoming (and losing) a parent, navigating the cross-currents of estrangement and acceptance, ecological peril and ambiguous loss. It is also a history of walking, of moving through the world at human speed. As such, Traverse maps a new understanding of familial relation, from birth kin to chosen clan, from missing link to known donor children, arcing toward a wider embrace of the generational and archetypal substrates that inform identity, singular and plural alike. What kin are you to me? Craft asks, sifting through uncertainties, genealogies, and the geological record to find a deeper connection to both human and non-human nature, piecing together, step by step, a vision of expansive love, and the fragile ecology in which our lives subsist.

Dressing in the Dark is the fourth poetry collection by award-winning poet and former Washington State Poet Laureate Kathleen Flenniken. In this powerful new work, Flenniken confronts the moral and emotional complexities of recovery, drawing from the speaker's journey through breast cancer. Guided by memories of her mother and her intertwined identities as a mother, daughter, and writer, she navigates the terrain of illness, surgery, and healing. These poems become greater meditations on fear and mortality, touching on the quiet struggle to find acceptance amid grief.
