Merriam Press World War 2 History Series. At the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge the two most important localities were Bastogne and St. Vith, with their road nets which if held would disrupt the plan of any aggressor. Bastogne was an important communications center and received much of the attention, causing many to lose sight of the importance of St. Vith and the gallant stand made for its defense by elements of the 106th Division and CCB, 7th Armored Division. It was CCB which influenced the subsequent action and caused the enemy so much delay and so many casualties. Though armor was not designed primarily for the role of the defensive, the operation was nevertheless a good example of how it can assume such role in an emergency. This is a detailed, well-written history of a highly significant battle. This is a brand new edition (not a facsimile reprint) of a booklet originally published by the Armor School at Ft. Knox in 1966. 9 photos, 11 maps, 2 OB charts, 4 appendices.

Merriam Press World War 2 History Series. The Soviet Union pioneered the use of parachute troops during the 1930s. However, few of the large-scale Soviet parachute drops attempted by the Soviets during World War II were successes by Western standards. There were inherent differences in the Soviet philosophy of airborne warfare which caused them to view many of their airborne operations in a far different light than other countries. The relationship between the Soviet airborne forces and the partisans was constantly considered by the Soviet High Command when planning airborne operations and that relationship is stressed here. This general study of the experiments in mountain and winter warfare training from 1940 to 1944 was designed as an introduction to the histories of the Mountain Training Center and the 10th Mountain Division. Its purpose was to trace the development of mountain and winter warfare training from its inception in 1940 to its termination in 1944. Considerable controversy attended the decisions of the War Department concerning mountain and winter warfare. This study was confined to an account of the actual decisions and the reasons for which they were made. This is an entirely new edition, with the addition of numerous photographs. 53 photos, footnotes.

Merriam Press Historical Fiction Series. The late Pierre Gerard''s historical war romance poignantly portrays the atrocities of war and what happens when individuals and nations ignore, unite with or combat those whose deliberate and declared intent is to intimidate, persecute, dominate and annihilate other people and countries. We learn about the boundless bravery that was France’s salvation during those terrifying, turbulent years. We taste the unleashed, incomprehensible evil that man is capable of and the horrific anguish and extermination the Nazis successfully executed against Jews, dissidents, and those they deemed different and inferior, and therefore, unworthy of life. Le Havre is significant not just for France and Europe during World War II, as the ramifications of this historical novel and era also apply to present and future civilizations. It is my hope that the reader be awakened and inspired by the passion and positive activism of The French Resistance. 52 images.

Merriam Press Fiction Series. A dark, sad, comedic, fictional account of a man who believes he is the reincarnation of Ernest Hemingway. "Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. Hemingway died on July 2, 1961, at his home in Ketchum, Idaho, from a self-inflicted wound to the head. "I was born on May 2, 1962, in Oak Lawn, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, exactly 10 months to the day after Hemingway''s death. "My name is Edsel Michael Hunter. My father, who worked in the automobile industry in Chicago, named me after a failed automobile. I suppose I was doomed from the start, as the very word ''Edsel'' became a popular symbol for failure in American society, and I was destined to be its poster child. "I have a confession to make. For better or worse, I am the reincarnation of the great twentieth century American writer, Ernest Hemingway. You may not believe it, but I know it''s true. And, no, I am not insane..."

Merriam Press World War 2 History Series. This is a brand new edition of "Study No. 23: The Army Ground Forces: Training for Mountain and Winter Warfare," originally published in 1946.
