We try our best as individuals to improve our fitness, dietary habits and financial stability, and to do the right thing by others and the planet, but it often falls to government and other institutions to persuade us to change our ways. BehaviourWorks Australia (BWA) is a leading behaviour change research enterprise in Australia, housed in the Monash Sustainable Development Institute at Monash University. Their work spans hundreds of projects with government, industry and community partners in areas such as health, climate change, energy, water, waste, pollution, biodiversity, biosecurity, education, social inclusion, finance and safety. Based on extensive research and experience, the team at BWA developed the highly respected BehaviourWorks Method - a tried and tested approach to influencing behaviour for impactful and meaningful outcomes to build a better world. Featuring real-world case studies involving partnerships with Ambulance Victoria, the Transport Accident Commission, federal and state governments, the Environment Protection Authority and Sustainability Victoria, Inspiring Change is a practical, in-depth guide on how to use the BehaviourWorks Method to foster economic prosperity, better health, social inclusion and environmental sustainability.

How do the Western media represent Asia? How do the Asian media represent the West? What is the role of the media? What should be the media's relationship with the state? Australia's leading academics on the media in Southeast Asia provide provocative essays focusing on key issues in reporting on and within the region.

The history of contact between Japan and Australia is rich in literature, business, romance and war. Challenging the notion that these two nations have long been culturally isolated, this volume brings out the diversity of their relationship.

Urban sprawl and sparse living are pervasive in Australia. Despite high levels of car ownership, many Australians do not have access to a private car for their travel needs. These people, often from marginalised groups in society such as young people, those on low incomes, older people, indigenous Australians and those with disabilities, face difficulties accessing services, facilities and activities. What are the personal and social costs of lack of access to transport on individual and community well-being? How, and to what extent, do poor transport options contribute to disadvantage?

Long before the advent of modern tourism, Australians travelled to live in Italy, or undertook extensive visits there. Indeed they continue to do so in increasing numbers, as women and men find Italian partners; as business people with European interests settle there; as retirees in their thousands seek ‘the good life’ that Italy seems to promise. While many are familiar with celebrated expatriates such as Germaine Greer, Jeffrey Smart, Peter Robb and David Malouf, hundreds of other artists, writers, musicians and intellectuals have made and continue to make a notable contribution to the cultural and intellectual lives of both countries. Whilst Australian Studies flourishes in Italian universities, Australian academics write distinguished accounts of Italian history covering various eras. Despite this sustained activity, the scholarly and cultural engagement of Australians with Italy is not well known. This collection seeks to map the past and present of the Australian love affair with Italy, and yields rich insights into its causes, motivations and transformations. Contributors include former Australian Ambassador to Italy Rory Steele, poet Peter Porter, artists Euan Heng and Jo-Anne Duggan, as well as distinguished academics and young scholars. Amongst the diverse range of articles and vignettes are chapters by Ian Britain on Donald Friend’s Italian years, Loretta Baldassar exploring reverse migration, and novelist Lisa Clifford reflecting on her family ties with Italy. Australians in Italy will appeal to scholars and students of migration and multiculturalism, Australian Studies, Italian Studies, and tourism and travel. It will also delight those interested in Italy and all things Italian.

Australians have always loved a good show, as this new collection of essays demonstrates. The significance of exhibitions goes beyond mere entertainment. From the 1850s to the present, exhibitions have been a marketing tool for Australia’s advancements in global trade, migration and tourism. They have also been powerful vehicles for conspicuous consumption, civic progress, social status, and identity – be it local, national or international. This multi-disciplinary collection presents new research on a fascinating variety of exhibitions from nineteenth-century World Fairs to late twentieth-century Expos. Contributors are leading museum professionals and academics from a range of disciplines including art history, the history of design, literary studies, indigenous history, cultural and social history and the history of science.Seize the Day examines the complex role of exhibitions within Australia’s cultural, commercial and artistic histories. Exhibitions are dynamic sites for the construction of national identities and international collaborations, the showcasing of collecting and exhibiting practices, and the expression and contestation of race and gender. Detailed case studies explore the many facets of exhibitions – from ethnographic display to artistic competition to intercolonial rivalry – to reveal their politics, personalities and astonishingly rich material culture. As the first book to address the exhibition movement in Australia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Seize the Day will become the standard collection on this topic for years to come.

In a new and updated edition, Writing Histories: Imagination and Narration is a book for anyone wanting to write histories that capture the imagination and challenge the intellect. It aims to show that historical narrative and imagination can work together to produce works of history that are a pleasure to read.Nine historians reflect on their work as writers, exploring some of the most difficult and interesting questions any history-writer faces: how to get started, how to find a ‘voice’, how to enliven a description or a narration, and how to find a worthwhile structure. Contributors also suggest how historians can convey multiple perspectives, ‘show’ rather than tell, foreground the research process, find inspiration from music, painting and landscape, and use literary techniques such as metaphor. The book will be a useful text for teachers and students in history-writing classes and informal groups. There are suggestions for group exercises, and advice on how to conduct writing workshops. Many historians, however, both students and established writers, will continue to write in relative isolation. This book is also intended for them. This updated edition of Writing Histories has a new introduction written by Ann Curthoys, and an updated bibliography.

Much is known about British migration to Australia and something is known of British communities in Australia, but knowledge, particularly quantitative, of Australian migration to Britain is very sketchy. The phenomenon has been acknowledged but little explored. There are a number of important studies of significant Australians in the UK, and there has been recent research on the current Australian diaspora, but there is no study of the overall Australian presence, its constituents or its characteristics, in Britain. Developments in this field of research offer an important window on how Australians have related to the ‘British world’ historically and on the dynamic nature of the contemporary relationship.Australians in Britain is an edited collection of papers of international research on the character and experience of overseas Australians and Australian communities in Britain since c.1901. It offers a comprehensive overview of current scholarship in this exciting, new and developing field of inquiry. This book has a contemporary focus, drawing on both recent and historical experiences with a view to understanding continuing trends – such as the consistent preponderance of women and the recent surge in young professionals travelling to Britain – and issues such as expatriation, imperialism, globalisation, national identity and overseas citizenship. This book will appeal to scholars of Australian Studies, History, Demography, Literary and Cultural Studies, and Tourism. With an emphasis on London, Australians in Britain explores a range of subject matter including: artists, literary intellectuals, students, women, tourists and travellers, servicemen, nurses, teachers and journalists; global professionals; the changing community; demographic trends; migration; links between Australia and Britain; Australian newspapers in London; and Australia in the ‘British world’.

Timor-Leste’s independence was forged at a time when international developmental theory had rejected top down approaches and recognised the importance of participatory approaches. When the United Nations and a multitude of bilateral and multilateral non-government organisations arrived in Timor-Leste in 1999 it was hoped that the international intervention would at last produce a development success story. But independence also brought the realisation that dreams for an independent Timor-Leste varied, often according to the dreamer’s generation. Three generations of Timorese: the political elite, a younger generation of independence activists (gerasaun foun) and today’s youth of independent Timor-Leste, each bring their own experiences and face different challenges in Timor-Leste. Today stark contrasts between the values of customary life and those of the modernising world place both community leaders and young Timorese at a crossroads. The experiences of the Timorese are unique, but this book reflects a broader analysis about how aid-influenced processes of development can work in greater harmony with people to realise their own visions of the future of the nation.

The education of marginalised peoples and communities is a topic of great contemporary importance. Closing the Gap in Education? increases our understanding of the nature and challenges of marginalisation in southern world societies. The book also canvasses possible directions for change that might improve the social participation of young people. It is both timely and distinctive. Closing the Gap in Education? emanates from a conference organised by the Monash Institute for the Study of Global Movements, in partnership with Monash South Africa, held in 2009 at Monash’s Johannesburg campus. Leading scholars and public figures from Australia, South Africa and New Zealand participated. The authors provide illuminating accounts of marginalisation which point to the inadequacy of many current educational policies. Several contributors question the usefulness of notions of closing gaps and bridging divides, suggesting alternative ways to frame the debates. In explaining the key terms – marginalisation, gaps, divides, peripheries – the contributors consider capabilities, social practices, neo-liberalism, human capital theory, raciology, redistribution, the education debt, the politics of hope, history as a cultural resource and other concepts. They do so as academics and activists committed to social justice in education. The achievement of social transformation is particularly emphasised. Closing the Gap in Education? makes a most important contribution to understanding education in marginalised communities. It is a thought-provoking work, relevant to all readers interested in education, policy, government, global, media and indigenous studies.

A regional mining community that won a national reputation, Wonthaggi came to be admired by many, and disliked by others. For sixty years the town’s highly unionised miners successfully worked the thin, broken seams of a state coal mine that would have been regarded as insufficiently profitable by most Australian mine owners. At times, through the national Miner’s Federation, they exerted a powerful influence within the Australian coal industry and beyond. For the residents of Wonthaggi, their mine and their union helped them understand and define who they were, these things playing a role in their everyday lives, understandings and imaginations that thoroughly transcended the workplace. In an age of private accumulation and social fragmentation, Up from the Underworld brings to light this important history.

Everyone knows what intoxication and drunkenness are, what they look like, how to define and measure them and what their consequences are. At least we might assume so given the ways these words are used by the media, by politicians and policy makers and by various medical, educational and legal experts in Australia and around the world. A whole variety of concerns about young people, individual and public health, road safety, sexual assault and violence are connected to these takenforgranted understandings of intoxication and drunkenness. Drawing on an extensive review of research from biomedicine, psychology, sociology and legal studies, and from news media reporting, the authors reveal a far more complex picture. This is a picture marked by little agreement on how to define intoxication and drunkenness, how to measure intoxication, what getting drunk means to those who drink (including young people, men and women and people from different cultural and national backgrounds), and where responsibility lies for many of the individual, social, medical and legal consequences of intoxication and drunkenness. Smashed! presents an overview of the history of these concerns and an extensive account of the many meanings of intoxication and drunkenness at the start of the 21st century. It provides a valuable resource for researchers, policy makers, the media and members of the community who are involved in these ongoing, often emotive, debates.

How can we seek justice and redress for the sexual abuse of children and better prevent the occurrence of such abuse? This work brings together the thoughts on this question advanced by leading scholars, from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, from around the world. These thinkers – some also professional practitioners – provide new perspectives on sanctioned and informal responses to abuse in religious, educational and total institutions, as well as to abuse carried out in non-institutional settings. The Sexual Abuse of Children will be a valuable resource for researchers, students and those who deal with related issues in professional contexts.

The extraordinary economic performance of Asia is arguably the most important economic phenomenon of the last 50 years. Recovering from the shocks of colonial control, the world of Asian business is a rapidly changing scenario in which home-grown companies compete against multinationals for market share and market access. This collection focuses on the role of entrepreneurship -- both private and state -- in propelling Asian economic growth in the five decades since the end of the World War II. The volume places the familiar names of Asian business in a long term historical and policy context. The 21st century is now being heralded as the 'Asian Century' and this book assists in understanding what has made all this possible.

These are histories that aren’t taught at school – but should be!

In 2004, Janine Burke was looking for a photograph she’d taken of Albert Tucker. Crammed into the bottom drawer of a filing cabinet in her study, she discovered hundreds of photographs that she’d taken over the years and forgotten about.Best known as an author and art historian, Personal View: Photographs 1978–1986 reveals Burke as an ‘accidental photographer’ who recorded the artists, critics, writers and curators who were her friends and colleagues during a dynamic period in Australian art.Personal View Photographs: 1978–1986 is a casual, intimate, visual memoir that includes Albert Tucker, Betty Churcher, Sue Ford, Allan Mitelman, Jenny Watson, Shane Maloney, John Nixon, Frances Lindsay and Paul Taylor.Living in Carlton in the 70s, Burke was part of a milieu that generated the women’s art movement, feminist exhibitions, radical journals, experimental galleries and provocative art. The common denominator in all these ventures were networks of intense friendships, a catalyst that helped to change the culture.Personal View is a snapshot of an era.

In recent years research initiatives in the field of project management have accelerated and are now pursued across many disciplinary fields and a vast range of project types, ranging from construction to organisational change and new product development. This diversity of research into phenomena within the ‘project’ context suggests the dynamism of and progress within this field of study, and its potential to contribute to scholarly knowledge within a range of disciplinary areas outside of project management itself, including organisational studies, knowledge management and organisational learning. The papers presented in this book reflect the richness of this developing intellectual area in highlighting how projects interrelate with their social and contextual environments.

SYN(Student Youth Network) is a media organisation run by people between the ages of 12 and 26. In a new sociocultural environment, migrant identities are constantly repositioned. Exploration of this experience aids understanding of the fluid and flexible nature of identity itself. In Identity, Language and Culture in Diaspora, Maryam Jamarani deals with ‘diasporic identities’ and advances a paradigm in which ‘becoming’, rather than ‘being’, is emphasised. Jamarani investigates changes in the identity of first generation Iranian Muslim women in Australia. Before migrating to Australia most of this group spent the first twenty years of their lives in the Westernoriented monarchy of Iran and then, after the 1978 Islamic Revolution, lived under the Islamic antiWestern government of the country. What effects have this distinctive experience had on the linguistic, cultural, national, gender and religious identity of individuals within this grouping? Jamarani aims to identify the core values that these women continue to hold after migration, as well as areas where their values have changed. Engaging with contemporary theories of acculturation, Jamarani proposes a novel, sociolinguistically enhanced acculturation model, emphasising the significance of the fluid and flexible nature of identity, which holds out the promise of shedding new light on the acculturation process of migrants in general. This book will be of interest to scholars around the world researching and teaching in the areas of identity, language, culture, gender and migration.

More than ever before, students have the option of studying abroad. The character of the higher education experience in many countries has been dramatically changed by the international flow of students. An increasing diversity and cosmopolitanism in higher education has been accompanied by that sector’s increasing financial dependence on students from overseas, and the fees they pay. Higher education, once perceived as benefiting the public, is now driven by principles of business and marketing. With a focus on Australia and South Africa, this book enhances understanding of the complex issues associated with international education in globalising times. The authors question the adequacy of many current higher education policies, challenge the contemporary emphasis on international education as a commodity rather than a public good, and put forward alternative ways of framing debates and formulating policies.

The frontiersmen who came to the Victoria River District of Australia’s Northern Territory included cattle and horse thieves, outlaws, capitalists, dreamers, drunks, madmen and others, from the explorers of the 1830s and 1850s to the founders of the big stations in the 1880s and 1890s, and the cattle duffers in the early 1900s. This book looks at them all. Drawing on painstaking research into obscure and rich documentary sources, Aboriginal oral traditions, and firsthand investigations conducted in the region over thirtyfive years, Darrell Lewis pieces together the complex interactions between the environment, the powerful and warlike Aboriginal tribes and the settlers and their cattle, which produced what truly became A Wild History.

This book brings together essays from leading Australian and international historians, in an analysis of the monumental Friendly Mission: the Tasmanian Journals and Papers of George Augustus Robinson 1829-1834, edited by NJB Plomley and republished in 2008. Until this book, Friendly Mission has rarely been considered in a context beyond the immediacy of Van Diemen’s Land. Yet George Augustus Robinson’s diverse writings constitute a body of work that typically has one set of meanings for local readers, and another for those outside its sphere of production. Robinson’s texts are exemplary of the ways in which colonial texts circulated around what Alan Lester, Professor of Historical Geography at the University of Sussex, has called ‘imperial networks.’

Wanderings in India: Australian Perceptions, sharing its title with a curious and entertaining travel book written by the first Australian-born writer John Lang, is a collection of essays about diverse encounters between Australians and Indians in both South Asia and the Antipodes. The chapters—creative, reflective and academic—meet the objectives of a volume that provide snapshots of the wide range of interests and issues that Australians have shown towards India. Taken as a whole, the chapters represent a range of responses, reactions and experiences that chart the course of the ongoing engagement between Australia and India, between Australians and Indians. While there is something of an emphasis on literary responses, charting the ebb and flow of writers’ reactions to India from the 1850s onwards, this volume also includes historical, political, sporting and other writings about the complex “magnetic amalgams” that link Australia and India. The basic idea is to encourage on-going research and other kinds of writing about cross-cultural engagements between India and Australia; it is hoped that this volume will contribute to discussions about Australia-India relations in the coming century.

In November 2011, the cognitive scientist, philosopher and political activist Noam Chomsky arrived in Australia to receive the Sydney Peace Prize. He delivered lectures and answered questions about economics, history, international relations, linguistics, philosophy, justice and much more: What is unique about human language? How is it related to core components of human nature: cognition, moral judgment and other human activity? How can peace in the Middle East be achieved? What does the rise of China mean? What ought to be done about global economic problems? Is there a difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter?Chomsky’s intellectual stature has been compared to that of Galileo, Newton and Descartes. His influence has been felt in fields as diverse as artificial intelligence, cognitive neurology, music theory, anthropology, law and theology. His moral stature has been described as prophetic. He was the only scientist or philosopher on the White House ‘Enemies List’. His Sydney Peace Prize citation reads, in part, ‘For inspiring the convictions of millions about a common humanity and for unfailing moral courage’.This book is an edited reconstruction of public lectures, extemporaneous talks and interviews given during his few days in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

The trishaw was introduced to Singapore after the surrender of the British in 1942. After the end of the war, the trishaw continued to be a popular mode of transport as it was cheap and the service was seen to be personalised. The trishaw industry was dominated by two Chinese minority dialect groups and their ubiquitous presence could be a threat to local government in the 1940s and 1950s. By the time Singapore achieved independence in 1965, however, the trishaw was regarded as backward and public perception of the trishaw riders also changed. As the island nation embarked on a programme of economic modernisation, the trishaws were increasingly squeezed out. Through the use of travelogues, government records, trishaw associations’ records and oral history interviews, this book studies the personal experiences of those involved in the industry and the role local and national governments play in its rise and decline.

Education in Asia Pacific countries is being transformed by globalisation and the market economy. Most economies within the region have flourished due to increased regional capital flow, trade and other forms of economic and political interaction. The Asia Pacific also has rich and unique traditions, which create cultural diversity as well as common challenges, including obstacles of language and geographical separation. While these countries are well documented in Western scholarship, there is a growing reaction to the predominance of Western social theories. This response is fuelling recognition of and movement towards theories that reference the wide range of contextual and cultural perspectives available in the East. The contributors to this volume are currently researching contemporary education in Asia Pacific countries. They offer Eastern-oriented perspectives on teacher education, parent participation, government withdrawal, textbook content, uses of modern technology, the challenges of the migrating families and tertiary students who travel from overseas for study. These commentaries highlight the issues of equity, identity and social justice and also open up dialogue between social theories that reference East as well as West.

Australia’s inner cities experienced an upheaval in the 1960s and 70s which left them changed forever. People from all walks of life who valued their suburbs – places like Balmain, Battery Point, Carlton, Indooropilly, North Adelaide or Subiaco – resisted large-scale development projects for freeways, ‘slum clearance’ and mass-produced high-rise. Unlikely alliances of post-war migrants, university students and staff, construction workers and their unions, long-term residents and city workers, challenged land-grabs and inappropriate development. This book is an in-depth examination of the causes and consequences of urban protest in a democracy. It shows how protest changed the built environment as well as its participants, and how it resonated in many of our institutions including politics, media and multiculturalism.
