Over 25 contributors on Beverly Buchanan’s wide-ranging practice to reframe race, sexuality, disability, and the poetics of place.Beverly Buchanan: I Broke the House surveys Buchanan’s wide-ranging oeuvre of sculpture, painting, photography, drawing, writing, and printed matter. Pairing newly commissioned essays with archival materials, the book situates the artwork of Beverly Buchanan (1940–2015) within historical, discursive, and deeply personal contexts. Tracing eroded surfaces of urban ruins on canvas and paper, studying vernacular dwellings and their “builder-occupants” in the rural South, and addressing questions of race, commemoration, and politics of place through site-specific sculpture, Buchanan built a language of place and repair. Alongside extensive primary sources from public and private archives, contributions by over 25 scholars and artists extend and complicate our understanding of this exceptional artist.ContributorsElena Bally, Simone Browne, Jeffrey Bruce, Julia Bryan-Wilson, Jennifer Burris, Andy Campbell, Tony Cokes, Phoebe Collings-James, Mo Costello, Patricia Ekpo, Fredi Fischli, Jack Halberstam, Edgar Heap of Birds, Tonja Khabir, Charlotte Matter, Devin T. Two of the most important voices in art history discuss their intellectual foundations, the changing role of criticism, and the possibilities for artistic practice today. In Exit Interview, the prominent art critics and historians Hal Foster and Benjamin Buchloh discuss their intellectual foundations and the projects they've worked on together, from October magazine to Art Since 1900. Through three engaging conversations, Foster engages Buchloh on his early influences and aspirations, his formative years in Berlin, London, and Dusseldorf, and his career in North America, while exploring the impact of other art historians and critics. Buchloh candidly addresses his successes, critical significance, and unexplored avenues in art history, providing a unique window into his motivations and experiences. With a powerful postface by Buchloh, Exit Interview builds from biography and anecdote to important reflection on one’s critical life as a whole.

On the rich history of video art and its enduring relevance to today’s artistic and critical practices. The New Television delves into the rich history of video art, reexamining the pivotal Open Circuits conference held at MoMA in 1974 and exploring its enduring relevance to today’s artistic and critical practices. Open Circuits was an important event in establishing video art in American museums and articulated a range of conflicting teloses for the medium, some which materialized (like local cable television) and others that remain unrealized. The conference proceedings were published in 1977 as The New Television: A Public/Private Art, and the radical design of the book reflected the conference’s utopian aims. This two-part publication includes a facsimile of the long-out-of-print conference proceedings and new essays and discussions by over a dozen scholars and artists. The new scholarly texts and previously unpublished archival documents in The New Television illuminate the network of institutional histories of video art, consider global televisual contexts and alternative critical approaches, and examine contemporary video art and its continued relevance from new perspectives.

A provocative conversation on the erotic, appropriation, power, and sex.In Pervert or Detective?, artists Reba Maybury and Lucy McKenzie dissect power, desire, and subversion in a provocative conversation. Maybury, who integrates her work as a political dominatrix into her artistic practice, manipulates dynamics of control, compelling her male submissives to create art under her direction, only to claim it as her own. Through confession and humiliation, she dismantles notions of authorship, masculinity, and labor. McKenzie, known for her intricate trompe l’oeil paintings and conceptual installations, similarly blurs boundaries—between art and commerce, and authenticity and illusion. Her work challenges power structures and exposes the unstable nature of representation.Maybury and McKenzie, through an expansive discussion with French art critic Marie Canet, interrogate the logic of seduction and domination, pushing against rigid binaries to probe the material erotic, appropriation, and transformation. With an introduction by curators Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen, an afterword by writer Susan Finlay, and extensive reading and viewing lists, Pervert or Detective? offers a compelling exchange between artists committed to unsettling the familiar and redefining artistic agency.

The first in a landmark three-volume series gathering the complete writings of an indispensable voice in contemporary thought and aesthetics. No Place Press is collaborating with Jalal Toufic on an ambitious publishing project: The Collected Writings (1991–2024) of a Mortal to Death: Jalal Toufic. Spanning three volumes of more than six hundred pages each, the series gathers re-edited versions of his earlier works alongside two newly written books, arranged and organized by the author himself. For new readers, the volumes provide an introduction to Toufic’s central concepts—including the withdrawal of tradition past a surpassing disaster, radical closure, silence-over, the 180-degree over-turn, and the dancer’s two bodies—while for longtime readers they offer a comprehensive view of more than three decades of thought, presented in their most rigorous and fully articulated form. Yet, in keeping with Toufic’s practice—which participates in untimely collaboration (including with future filmmakers, thinkers, and artists) and abides in the suspension of the avenir of messianism/Mahdism—some of these works remain forthcoming even after their inclusion in the Collected Writings.Volume 1 (2025) includes newly revised editions of Toufic’s first three books—Distracted (1991/2003); (Vampires): An Uneasy Essay on the Undead in Film (1993/2003); and Over-Sensitivity (1996/2009)—together with the script Jouissance in Postwar Beirut (2014) and, new, The Unreviewed Writings of a Peerless Thinker (2024).

How artists built worlds over the past 25 years as art and life in New York City rapidly transformed. In this polyphonic history, twenty-nine artists and art-world figures trace the transition from material to immaterial culture in the first decades of the 2000s, exploring the inner and outer realities that shaped the art of the present. They speak of the euphoria of catching the last reflected light of the analog world as it yielded to a new digital reality. That turn-of-the-century high was followed by crisis and challenge as we entered an era increasingly defined by manipulation, with an art world ever more fragmented and corporate. Amid these shifts and the upheavals of recent years, artists turned to experiment and improvisation as both method and necessity. Interrupture offers a quarter-century of history through the eyes of artists in and around New York City, guided by an urgent need to map the turns that brought us here.Authored and edited by Bettina Funcke, a New York–based writer, critic, and editor whose work engages contemporary art and its social contexts, Interrupture draws on her longstanding involvement in the city’s art ecosystem to shape these conversations into a coherent, highly readable narrative while preserving the specificity of each voice.Featuring interviews with Ei Arakawa, Fia Backström, Carol Bove, Kerstin Brätsch, Cecily Brown, Johanna Burton, Paul Chan, Dara Friedman, Andrea Geyer, Kenneth Goldsmith, Carol Greene, Tim Griffin, Wade Guyton, Mark Handforth, Achim Hochdörfer, John Kelsey, Joseph Logan, Laura Owens, Seth Price, Scott Rothkopf, Beatrix Ruf, Jay Sanders, Olivia Shao, Taryn Simon, Josh Smith, Andy Stillpass, Fabrice Stroun, Emily Sundblad, and Kelley Walker.
