The aim of this book is to demonstrate that becoming a successful do-it-yourself (DIY) investor is within the reach of almost every person in society. Saving or investing in the stock markets is for everyone - from parents with the children's allowance, to someone who has a lump sum to invest, to the person who has just started working but can save even aC--100 a month, to someone who is free to manage their own pension. Building an asset base from which you can earn income gives you choices later in life. The aim is that, when you close this book, you should be able to implement an easy-to-follow approach to investing in the stock markets, whilst minimising risk. No matter what level of experience you are starting from, this book is aimed at assisting you to obtain the returns on offer from the markets over time. Arming yourself with a proper strategy or plan, which dictates what you buy and when you sell, is the key to stock market investing, and developing one is a good deal easier than you may think. That plan might be simply to invest across the different asset classes where there appears to be clear value on offer; to concentrate on high yielding funds listed on stock markets as a method of generating income, while controlling risk; or to master some successful approach to stock selection. 3 Steps to Investment Success offers an easy-to-follow mechanical approach to selecting a diversified portfolio of stocks from the UK FTSE 100 Index, an index that represents the 100 largest companies listed on the London Stock Exchange by market capitalisation. You will learn also how to invest in the stock market indirectly through listed funds, such as exchange-traded funds and investment companies, which offer instant diversification, allowing you to more easily control risk. And 3 Steps to Investment Success includes a short story, A Villa in the Sun by Virginia Gilbert, a BAFTA-nominated, award-winning writer and director, to drive home the often real consequences of speculating in markets rather than investing.

The book shows Michael's 'logical opportunism' in action, and explains how the Smurfit culture and systems provided a world-beating competitive advantage. 'It is up to others to judge how well I have done in life, but I believe that I grasped with both hands the challenge I was given as a young man and, in so doing, I honoured to the best of my ability, the legacy that was left to me by my father. All in all, I can honestly say that it's been a life worth living.' Michael Smurfit Michael's life outside Smurfit - his chairmanship of the Racing Board and of Telecom Eireann; his interest in horseracing; and his ownership of The K Club and the triumph that was the Ryder Cup 2006 - all feature, alongside his love and commitment to his family.

For many knowledge-intensive or technology-based start-up companies, the professional management of intellectual property (IP) is critically important. In fact, IP may be the main asset by which the value of a young company is determined and on which decisions to invest in the company are based - and so IP needs to be considered very early in the planning process. Intellectual Property: From Creation to Commercialisation provides a detailed grounding for innovators and researchers. The book starts with the source of innovation - that is, at the point where resourcefulness and creativity combine to develop new opportunities through problem-solving - and examines the critical steps that need to be carefully managed in the process surrounding the creation of IP and managing its development from concept through to exploitation. This involves the steps of identifying, capturing and assessing the value of IP. Useful recommendations for managing the transfer of IP from a research environment to the knowledge economy are provided and case studies illustrate pitfalls to watch out for. Readers can expect to gain a broad understanding of IP and the innovation process.Specifically, they will learn: > The benefits of implementing procedures to ensure that IP can be protected, managed and exploited effectively. > How to assess the most appropriate routes to market, such as licensing or sale of their IP, or establishing a spin-out company to deliver a service or product offering. > How to present a viable business case to potential funders and investors.

Account Planning is a strategic imperative that goes beyond traditional selling tactics. The benefits that accrue go beyond simple revenue numbers, and point to an approach that must be focused not just on greater revenue as the sole arbiter of strategy. When Account Planning is executed well, customer satisfaction increases. Customers who are more satisfied buy more from you, and do so without calling your competitors first. Customers who are served well are easier to retain, and therefore it is easier to make your revenue targets year after year. When you do effective Account Planning, you get to understand the customer's business, sit with them at their side of the table, and strengthen your ability to shape their thinking and their business strategies. A happy customer is hostile territory for your competitor to enter. Switching suppliers is expensive for a customer and they will do so only if they feel you are not serving them well and fairly. Your ability to monitor, measure and react is greater if you are closer to the heart of their business, understanding their corporate goals, and motivations. It takes investment, research and hard work, but is the price of customer retention and growth. In ACCOUNT PLANNING in SALESFORCE, you will learn how to gather the information you need to understand the Account as a marketplace and to segment that marketplace into discrete units so that you can choose where to spend your time. Recording the Current Opportunities in the Account, as well as business you already have won, you will be able to place your solutions on a structured map of the customer's business. Exploring how to uncover the customer's Business Drivers and how to navigate the political landscape in the account will help you to understand both the people who matter - the Key Players - and their associated Business Drivers. When all of the opportunities in the Account have been identified, you will evaluate each one against the twin axes of Value to Customer and Value to Us. That way you will uncover areas of Mutual Value - which is a thread that you will find woven into the fabric of the methodology. It is important. This is the White Space in the Account where you can help your customer to identify new potential areas of opportunity - and simultaneously discover new areas of opportunity for yourself. Finally, you will build the Execution Plan so that you get beyond planning and begin to manage and execute. And to keep things interesting, you will find many musical references throughout the book - this will be the only book on Account Planning that you will find that includes a song playlist! ACCOUNT PLANNING in SALESFORCE is focused on helping companies that have purchased Salesforce with their Account Planning initiatives. Its goal is to be the reference text on Account Planning for all Salesforce users.

In A LIFE WORTH LIVING, Michael Smurfit tells his own life story and that of the company he built. He documents the Smurfit Group's seemingly inexorable growth from humble beginnings, the challenges faced and overcome, and the many deals that continually doubled the size of the business every three or four years. He shows his 'logical opportunism

In this second edition of Work, Ethics & Organisational Life, readers are asked to think of their engagement with ethical frameworks, and then to apply these as lenses through which people engage with organisations: as managers, employees, consumers and stakeholders not directly engaged with corporations.

THRIVE IN THE FUTURE OF WORK provides a journey through the realities, implications and solutions for the rapidly changing world of work we live in today. It is not trying to be the remedy for future of work success. It is a practical account of what we know so far from those who have been there - and both a guide and an invitation for you to explore what your path will be towards future of work readiness and fulfilment. The book is presented in four parts across 10 chapters. Each chapter provides a mix of facts, research, case studies, tools and prompts to help readers address the question of what they can do in practical terms to help future-proof themselves and ytheir organisations in the changing world of work. Part 1: "The Changing World of Work and the Agility Challenge" examines the shifts and trends apparent in the world of work and how they have intensified in recent years. We explore what the Future of Work means in practical terms and how can it be broken down at individual and organisational level. The case for Agility as a core capability for future of work readiness is discussed and we explore the challenges and benefits of Agility and how it can be managed. Part 2: "Future-Fit and Future-Ready" focuses on Future of Work readiness and Agility at the individual level. We look at the elements and benefits of an agile mindset - and skillset - and how these can help to proactively manage uncertainty and change with purpose and confidence. The research-based elements of personal agility are explored to demonstrate how individuals can - and already are - successfully navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by the changing world of work.Part 3: "The Future-Ready Organisation" explores the practical realities and implications of the Future of Work at the wider organisational level. We discuss the emergence of a New Employment Deal, as well its implications, challenges and opportunities for leaders, employees and for HR. We look at the future role of the leader and of HR in shaping the new world of work.Part 4: "A Call to Action for the Future" examines the emerging choices for navigating the Future of Work at the societal level, especially in relation to areas such as ESG, education and employment policy. We explore what is needed from all of us as a society to proactively create a work environment where no one is left behind and for "good work" to thrive into the future. Finally, Your Call to Action summaries the key messages from the book and outlines five practical steps readers can take in navigating their own path into the Future of Work.

Sports clubs and voluntary organisations, in many cases, have become large and complex entities with strong membership numbers and significant budgets. Yet they are still operated by people who are essentially volunteers and, although they do so with the best motivations, far too often they are not equipped to deal with many of the areas in which they are involved. IT’S YOUR CLUB!, based on many years of practical experience of club committees, boards of directors and national councils, addresses many of the situations that cause problems for the officers of such clubs. It covers all aspects of the administration that supports the operation of the various functions of the club, explaining aspects of committees and their roles, the roles of the main officers, the importance of governance, the advantages of strategic planning, how leadership and management play different roles and how current legislation, such as child protection, affects the modern voluntary organisation. The political, economic and social environment in which sports clubs now operate has changed significantly and clubs need to adapt to ensure that they not only survive but are equipped to facilitate change and further development. IT’S YOUR CLUB! provides the definitive text on the leadership and management of sports clubs and will give club officers the confidence to make decisions vital to their club’s viability.

It also operates a Country Store and Café. THE STORY OF TIMBERTROVE is a story of …… two people, from ordinary backgrounds, who both left school early, mad keen to work, and who found they shared the same dreams of success.… how they succeeded in achieving their dreams – through hard work, ongoing learning, a lot of help and a bit of luck.… how they overcame two recessions – though the last one almost cost them everything – through sheer self-belief and determination.… a small family business, with super, hard-working, loyal employees, that grew and retrenched – and grew again.… the challenges of running a small business today – the day-in, day-out grind, the obstacles and hassles.… the joy of running a small business today – meeting and serving customers, freedom in decision-making, seeing the direct results of your efforts.… a family of entrepreneurs, beginning again now in the third-generation.Most of all, it’s the story of Shirley and Henry, of their family, of O’Kelly’s Sawmills and Timbertrove, of up and downs, good times and bad. Shirley says: “Our story – the story of Timbertrove – is quite simple: we followed our dream in setting up and running a successful business, while achieving our goals along the way. We have walked the talk! We built the business from the ground up with very little money, just a dream!”

The surest way to obtain the superior returns that stock markets have delivered in the past is to be an owner of "assets", either through a diversified selection of individual companies or through funds. However, not everyone has the patience or, indeed, the time to be a 'Buy & Hold' investor. Technical analysis is the study of price movements or price action in markets in an attempt to determine their likely future direction. Quite simply, if the direction is likely upwards, an investor who is timing the markets will want to be invested and if the likely direction is downwards, the investor will want to exit. Written by Rory Gillen, founder of GillenMarkets and author of 3 Steps to Investment Success, published in 2012, this booklet aims to provide readers with an understanding of how to time the markets and highlights a couple of successful technical indicators to market timing that we have followed over the years.

The potential for above average returns has always made private equity an attractive subsector of financial markets with investors gaining access to specialised managers who build portfolios of private companies. In Ireland, investors' principal way of gaining exposure to private equity has been through international private equity funds distributed by local stockbrokers, which tend to have significant minimum investment amounts and long-term lock-in periods, making access difficult for retail investors. However, there is an attractive alternative option: investing in high-quality, liquid private equity funds listed on the London Stock Exchange that have historically delivered attractive returns, allowing investors to avoid the high minimum investment levels, long-term lock-in periods and onerous upfront fees. This booklet, written by Jonathan Yates, research analyst at GillenMarkets, is aimed at providing readers with an overview of private equity investing, including the main characteristics, historical returns, the specifics of the UK listed private equity sector and the key risks investors must be aware of when investing in private equity.

HUMANITY@WORK&LIFE is intended to provide hope and inspiration by serving as a resource for those interested in developing worker cooperatives, as well as an introduction for those interested in virtuous cycle, "Solidarity Dividend" alternatives to shareholder primacy capitalism practices. It is also intended to peer over incoming vision horizons and around strategy corners, "showing, not telling" how Mondragon-inspired virtuous cycles transform "humanity at work" globally and locally. The book was conceived in the middle of four lethal virus pandemics simultaneously threatening "humanity@work": advancing extreme climate precarity, withering economic class inequalities including embedded racism, novel COVID-19 killing millions, and a global assault on democracy. Its twofold mission: first, to be a resource for those developing hybrid model worker cooperatives and social enterprises as structural and cultural antidotes to a rising, inclusive, and climate-respecting Stakeholders-as-Shareholders global economy; and second, to uplift and amplify critical new voices of those doing the work. The four concurrent global pandemics have shone a harsher light on inequalities in society and offer opportunities to develop hybrid worker ownership models that seed virtuous cycles. This book's core belief is that there is no sustaining worker voice without worker power communicated and demonstrated through solidarity, democracy, equality of opportunity and shared equity and wealth outcomes. Its premise is that an ineluctable foundational policy for a fair and aspirational economy working for all demands inclusive, broadened, and deepened, stakeholder worker ownership undergirded by workplace democracy practices. Like Mondragon, we believe single class equity governance is synonymous with solidarity. Every equity share guarantees the equal right to vote for change and provides the basis for power-paradigm-changing culture combining stakeholder community and individual civic mutualism, stability, and self-reliance to innovate, defend and facilitate more fulfilled lives and dignified retirements. The core academic purpose of HUMANITY@WORK&LIFE is to make the case as to why Mondragon is a dynamic working and evolving model for those who see the need for replicable structural change in our economic institutions and in the proverbial "free market" economy across physical borders and cultural silos. The Mondragon case will be detailed and include both an overview of ecosystem cooperatives and discussion of global diffusion activities that the Mondragon cooperatives embrace locally and globally as well as those from other geographies inspired by close to 70+ years of Mondragon cooperative experiences. The book will include sections that examine how cooperatives inspired by the Mondragon cooperative ecosystem in the Basque region of Spain are emerging in different communities in the USA, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Korea, and the UK. The last section of the book is intended to provide grounded inspiration about how to develop worker cooperatives and ecosystems that scale and breathe freely in a world beset by culturally induced pandemics doing their utmost to subvert democracy, freedom, truth, and hope.

Gold is money, and its durability, density, consistency and limited new supplies have resulted in it being the only currency to have acted as a true store of value over the millennia. This booklet was written by Rory Gillen, founder of GillenMarkets and author of 3 Steps to Investment Success, published in 2012. It outlines the physical characteristics of gold that underpin its use as jewellery and, more recently, in complex industrial applications. As gold yields no income, it cannot be valued in a conventional sense, so the booklet offers guidance on how to judge gold's intrinsic value and how one can value gold relative to other hard assets such as US house prices. The booklet also introduces you to three separate and highly useful technical indicators that provide a risk-controlled way of determining when gold is worth buying. All three indicators have outperformed a 'Buy & Hold' gold strategy since 1968 by wide margins. Finally, there's a discussion on the merits or otherwise of bitcoin, which some argue is the new digital gold.

Learning how to save and invest is not a luxury, it is a crucial part of our lives, and if you want to achieve financial freedom, you need to be more informed. That we learn little about even the basics of saving and investing in school or university is part of the problem. Written by Rory Gillen, founder of GillenMarkets and author of 3 Steps to Investment Success, published in 2012, this booklet outlines why the stock markets and property have delivered the best returns over the long-term, how to define and mitigate the major economic risks and the difference between investing and speculating. It also makes a crucial distinction between the risks faced by the regular investor and the lump-sum investor, outlines a sound investment plan for each and shows you how to get started.

This booklet was written by Darren Gillen, research analyst at GillenMarkets, and is aimed at the reader who is interested in learning about the various ways to invest in property. Buying a property is a common way for retail investors to invest their savings, and this is particularly the case in Ireland. Bricks and mortar are tangible and easily understood, while the stock market appears to many to be mystifying and volatile. As is often the case in investing, misconceptions abound. Direct property investing is riskier than many assume, and property investing through the stock market is less risky than popular perceptions would have you believe. This booklet aims to give you a more nuanced understanding of property investing, the key drivers of returns and how to invest in property through the stock market. A sound plan for investing in property that mitigates the key risks is the ticket to attractive returns. We hope that this booklet serves as a reliable guide in that regard.

This revised and updated third edition of MONEY FOR JAM contains everything that someone who is new to the food business in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK will need to get started and to keep going - including legislation and registration, labelling and packaging, suppliers and distributors - in an easy-to-read and easy-to-follow format.

Successful investing is not easy. While the future looms as unknowable as ever, IN SEARCH OF RETURNS will help you to evaluate the relationship between 'expected' risk and returns, understand different investment asset classes and investment strategies, and appreciate the influence of cognitive biases in asset pricing and investment behaviour.
