High altitude mountain regions, where the climate is cool and dry rather than hot and humid, occur throughout the tropics of Central and South America, Africa, and Malaysia. As a consequence of these conditions, the animals and plants of this unique life zone more closely resemble their counterparts thousands of miles to the north or south than comparable species in the lowland jungles only a few thousand metres below. These ecological islands pose interesting questions of physiological adaptation, biogeography, and evolutionary relationship that have only recently gained a significant place in tropical ecology. The editors of this book have brought together leading researchers in a wide-ranging monograph on the climate and origin, ecology, and evolution of the animals and plants of this ecological zone, drawing on specific well-studied examples.

Studies in Contemporary Jewry brings together for the first time scholars working in different countries and belonging to different disciplines. Regarding modern Jewish history as a part of the ethnic explosion which has had a momentous impact on 19th- and 20th-century history, the contributors to Volume III address one of the greatest questions of modern Jewish studies: to what extent is modern Jewish history unique, and to what extent have Jews acted in ways similar to those of other minorities?

Like the symposium on which it is based, the book brings together prominent literary theorists and architects to offer a variety of perspectives on the relation between post-modernism and architecture. The contributors include such luminaries from the forefront of literary studies as J Hillis Miller, Jacques Derrida and Jean-Francois Lyotard; the architects Peter Eisenman and Robert Stern are also called upon to offer their interpretations of "deconstructive architecture." The high calibre of the discourse and the variety of approaches included is liable to draw a scholarly audience from a wide range of disciplines.

This is a reissue of Native American Tribalism with a new Introduction by Peter Iverson. In this book the late D'Arcy McNickle, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Saskatchewan, member of the Flathead Tribe of Montana, and founding member of the National Congress of American Indians reviews the history of almost four hundred years of contact between North American Indians and the dominant - and often domineering - Western civilization. McNickle shows that contrary to the white man's early expectations, the Indians of North America have maintained their cultural identity, social organization, size, locations of their population, and unique position before the law. He points out that even while stigmatized with the generalization of being an inferior race, harsh treatment by the white North American cultures, and severe obstacles such as epidemics of small pox, Indians have managed to remain an ethnic cultural enclave within American and Canadian society from colonial times through the present. McNickle maintains that Indians are eager to adopt knowledge and technology from the white society, but they want to fit these changes into their own culture. He argues that by emphasizing tribal self-determination, the federal government can best help Indians to modernize and achieve independence while maintaining their ancient heritage.Peter Iverson's Introduction discusses McNickle's contribution to Native American studies and provides an overview of recent events and scholarship in the field. He has also updated the appendix describing the geographical distribution of the principle tribes in the United States and Canada.

This brilliant collection of essays examines the dialogue between Jewish history and historiography in terms of changing national and popular myths, folk memory, and historical consciousness of Jews in modern times. From essays dealing with the origins of Jewish historiography in the nineteenth century, to its contemporary perspectives and methodologies, this book provides a great overview and varied insights into the field.

Drawing upon original essays by such notable historians and political scientists as Michael Walzer, this collection confronts the often conflicting role of values, interests, and identity in contemporary Jewish politics.

Sitting in his study, William Carlos Williams once revealed to Robert Coles what he considered to be his greatest problem in writing a documentary about his patients in New Jersey. "When I'm there, sitting with those folks, listening and talking," he said to Coles, "I'm part of that life, and I'm near it in my head, too.... Back here, sitting near this typewriter--its different. I'm a writer. I'm a doctor living in Rutherford who is describing 'a world elsewhere.'" Williams captured the great difficulty in documentary writing--the gulf that separates the reality of the subject from the point of view of the observer .Now, in this thought-provoking volume, the renowned child psychiatrist Robert Coles, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Children in Crisis series, offers a penetrating look into the nature of documentary work. Utilizing the documentaries of writers, photographers, and others, Coles shows how their prose and pictures are influenced by the observers frame of reference: their social and educational background, personal morals, and political beliefs. He discusses literary documentaries: James Agee's searching portrait of Depression-era tenant farmers, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, and George Orwell's passionate description of England's coal-miners, The Road to Wigan Pier. Like many documentarians, Coles argues, Agee and Orwell did not try to be objective, but instead showered unadulterated praise on the "noble" poor and vituperative contempt on the more priviliged classes (including themselves) for "exploiting" these workers. Documentary photographs could be equally revealing about the observer. Coles analyses how famous photographers such as Walker Evans and Dorthea Lange edited and cropped their pictures to produce a desired effect. Even the shield of the camera could not hide the presence of the photographer. Coles also illuminates his points through his personal portraits of William Carlos Williams; Robert Moses, one of the leaders of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee during the 1960s; Erik H. Erikson, biographer of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther; and others. Documentary work, Coles concludes, is more a narrative constructed by the observer than a true slice of reality. With the growth in popularity of films such as Ken Burns's The Civil War and the controversial basketball documentary Hoop Dreams, the question of what is "real" in documentary work is more pressing than ever. Through revealing discussions with documentarians and insightful analysis of their work, complemented by dramatic black-and-white photographs from Lange and Evans, Doing Documentary Work will provoke the reader into reconsidering how fine the line is between truth and fiction. It is an invaluable resource for students of the documentary and anyone interested in this important genre.

This book is an interdisciplinary and multicultural study of ancient and contemporary texts that encode women's spirituality. The contributors, using modern critical methods such as feminist theory, postculturalism, and the new historicisms, examine how the ideas in these texts are being reworked in different religious traditions. The volume encompasses both contemporary and historical contexts, tracing the roles, actions, writings, and beliefs of women in pre-Christian, Christian, Islamic, indigenous, and neo-pagan contexts. The book builds on three decades of feminist research into such areas as goddess worship, indigenous spiritualities, eco-feminism, biblical hermeneutics, Christian and Islamic mysticism, subversive poetics, and mythological systems inside and outside the mainstream.

This book describes, analyses, and compares the political economy of growth in its interrelationship with equity and poverty in Egypt and Turkey. It covers the period of modern national independence, obtained in both countries in 1923, up to 1985.

This volume analyses and compares economic growth in Nigeria and Indonesia during the period from 1950 to 1985, addressing questions as to why one country was so much more successful than the other. In providing some surprising answers for those who believed that the divergence would be found in deeply rooted, long term trends, the authors also offer insight into what has become a reversal of fortune in the late 1990's, as Indonesia has experienced decline, and the Nigerian economy had stabilized.

Can a developing country balance a stable democracy with a well-functioning market economy? THis question is addressed in this book by showing how political reforms influence the efforts of governments to initiate and sustain economic reforms. THe case studies used focus on two clusters of policies: monetary and fiscal controls, and trade and exhcange rate mechanims. In contrast to many analyses, the studies consider these policies not only as fuctions of their intended economc effects but also as outcomes of interactions among politicians, bureaucreats, an interest groups. The studies also examine the evolving institutional context in each country. The book explains how conflicts between pluralist politics and growth-promoting policies can be resolved, and it shows why adjustment is not complete until the public has voted for reform.
