From Joseph to Joshua
Biblical Traditions in the Light of Archaeology
AvH H Rowley
Inbunden, Engelska, 1950
807 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
The story of the Exodus has been one of the most vexing historico-Biblical problems to confront scholars. The fundamental chronological problems are of the utmost complexity, yet they materially affect the view that is taken of Israel's religious development. Delivered in 1948, these lectures consider the Biblical traditions, the surviving extra-Biblical texts, and the archaeological evidence.

Amorites and Canaanites
AvKathleen Kenyon
Inbunden, Engelska, 1966
1 518 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
From the Biblical record it is clear that the principal occupants of Palestine at the time of the advent of the Israelites were the Amorites and the Canaanites. Who were these two peoples? Excavations have shown that towards the end of the third millennium nomadic groups disrupted the urban civilization of the Early Bronze Age in Palestine. Delivered in 1963, these lectures describe these groups and show that they can be linked with the Amurru of Syria. They are thus the ancestors of the Biblical Amorites.About 1900 B.C. these were succeeded by another group, likewise derived from Syria, but from the coastal region, bringing with them an urban culture which seems to have evolved in the neighbourhood of Byblos. It is equated with that of the Canaanite towns of the Syro-Palestinian coast. The Israelites entering Palestine had little material culture of their own. They settled amongst their Amorite and Canaanite predecessors and adopted their way of life. The light thrown by archaeology upon this way of life is thus very relevant to Biblical studies. Houses and tombs, especially at Jericho, have provided much evidence, and have shown that there was no real cultural break, at least until the twelfth century B.C. A study of the systems of fortification moreover, shows that a foreign ruling aristocracy, probably the Hyksos, could be absorbed without altering the basic culture. This was the setting in Palestine at the time of the entry of the Israelites.
Semitic Writing
From Pictograph to Alphabet
AvG R Driver
Inbunden, Engelska, 1976
1 251 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
This is the third edition of the late Sir Godfrey Driver's Schweich Lectures, first delivered in 1944. The present edition is based on extensive revisions and additions made by the author himself. The third edition takes account of research and discoveries in the fields of Semitic epigraphy and the theory of writing. It deals with cuneiform scripts, the origins of alphabetic writing, its development from the earliest records until its transmission to the Greeks, and covers all the more important North-Semitic inscriptions. Theories regarding forms of letters, their names, place in the alphabetical sequence etc. are discussed at length.
Hazor
AvYigael Yadin
Inbunden, Engelska, 1972
985 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
Hazor was the largest city in Palestine in the Canaanite period and cultural and a commercial centre of some consequence in the Fertile Crescent, as well as being an important bastion of the Israelite Kingdom. Professor Yigael Yadin conducted extensive excavations on the site of the town between 1955 and 1969 as Director of the James Rothschild Hebrew University Expedition.Professor Yadin's 1970 Schweich Lectures first describe the history of Hazor as recorded in the Egyptian Execration Texts, the Mari archives, Egyptian New Kingdom documents, the Armarna Letters, and finally the Old Testament. They proceed to give an authoritative account of the fascinating results achieved in the five seasons of excavation. These include the large lower city with its earthen fortifications, the many temples, the Solomonic City, the Israelite water-system, as well as a chapter on the author's discoveries of the corresponding periods at Megiddo.
Charters of the Honour of Mowbray 1107-1191
AvD E Greenway
Inbunden, Engelska, 1972
446 kr
Skickas inom 3-6 vardagar
The honour of Mowbray, which was created by King Henry I for Nigel d'Aubigny, was one of the greatest feudal estates of the Anglo-Norman kingdom, with territories in ten English counties and in Normandy. The 400 collected charters of the first three generations of the Mowbray family provide abundant material for a study of the feudal structure, economy, and administration of the honour between 1107 and 1191. The introduction to the collection examines such topics as the pattern of enfeoffment and ecclesiastical endowment, the management of the demesne, the process of colonization, and the organization of the household.
Archaeology and the Dead Sea Scrolls
AvR de Vaux
Inbunden, Engelska, 1973
807 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
The late Fr. Roland de Vaux was the excavator of Qumran, the home of the religious establishment to which the Dead Sea Scrolls belonged. He was also the organizer of the international team charged with editing the manuscripts. He was, therefore, singularly well placed to apply the evidence of archaeology to the interpretation of the documents. In his Schweich Lectures, delivered at the Academy in 1959, and published in French in 1961, Fr. de Vaux described in detail and archaeological evidence relating both to the scrolls and to the community which owned and may have written them.Shortly before his death in 1971, Fr. de Vaux had completed the revision of these lectures, incorporating much new material which had come to light since the first edition was published. This is included in this second edition translated into English under his own supervision.
The Lay Subsidy of 1334
AvRobin E Glasscock
Inbunden, Engelska, 1975
651 kr
This volume publishes the 1334 Lay Subsidy assessments for the whole of England. The medieval lay subsidies were taxes on personal wealth, levied on the laity from time to time to meet the increasingly urgent demands of the Crown for revenue over and above its regular income, particularly for military operations. The subsidy of 1334 continued what had become established practice - levying a rate of a fifteenth from rural areas and a tenth from boroughs. But in one important respect it different from its predecessors: the system of direct taxation on individuals was, with a few exceptions, replaced by a system of taxation quotes payable by each vill and borough on the basis of entirely new assessments negotiated with each local community. These quotes, with minor adjustments, remained the basis for future collections of the subsidy for some three centuries, whenever Parliament granted a fifteenth and a tenth. The records of the 1334 subsidy, listing county by county some 14,000 places, give complete coverage over the whole of England, with the exception of the Palatinates of Chester and Durham and a few other franchises. They thus provide an invaluable index to the relative wealth of different districts and individual places in early fourteenth-century England, and afford many sidelights on the state of the country immediately before the Black Death. Dr Glasscock supplies a detailed Introduction and an Index which serves as a valuable gazetteer.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre Jerusalem
AvCharles Coüasnon
Inbunden, Engelska, 1974
429 kr
Skickas inom 3-6 vardagar
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem has suffered many vicissitudes. A Constantinian foundation, it was twice destroyed and rebuilt before the Crusaders took it in hand. Respected by Saladin at his conquest, the church remained much as the Crusaders left it, until in 1808 a fire broke out and spread through the whole building. In 1927 a severe earthquake shook Jerusalem causing widespread damage to the structure, so that for forty years afterwards the southern façade was supported by steel scaffolding. No one has probably had such a close knowledge of the church, from foundation to roof top, as Father Coüasnon, who, among others, was instrumental in drawing up the restoration plan agreed upon in 1959 by the various churches owning different parts of the complex of buildings. In his Schweich Lectures delivered at the British Academy in 1972, Father Coüasnon describes the history of the church in detail, revealing the fresh discoveries which have enabled the site to be planned with a new authority.

Some Aspects of Hittite Religion
AvO R Gurney
Häftad, Engelska, 1977
611 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
Parallels between Hittite civilisation and the Old Testament belong largely to the field of religion. In the first of his three Schweich lectures (delivered in 1976) Professor Gurney traces the historical development of the Hittite pantheon, while in his second and third lectures he selects some aspects of Hittite religion which can be compared with ancient Hebrew and Canaanite institutions. The second lecture describes the cult, both local and official, and the purpose of the open-air temple at Yazilikaya. The third is devoted to Hittite rituals of elimination and substitution and the mortuary ritual for the King. Parallels are drawn with the biblical masseba as a cult object and with the scapegoat ritual of Leviticus.
Two Theories of Morality
Thank-Offering to Britain Fund Lectures, 1976
AvStuart Hampshire
Inbunden, Engelska, 1976
279 kr
Skickas inom 3-6 vardagar
In this expanded version of his Thank-Offering to Britain Fund lectures, delivered at the British Academy in February 1976, Stuart Hampshire compares two radically different conceptions of morality, those of Aristotle and Spinoza, authors, he claims, of the most plausible of all moral philosophies. He discusses the relation between moral intuitions and moral theory, and the contrasting ideas of moral normality and moral conversion. Spinoza's theory of the relation between mind and body is expounded and its relevance to recent theories is explained.
Manuscript, Society and Belief in Early Christian Egypt
AvColin H Roberts
Inbunden, Engelska, 1979
240 kr
Skickas inom 3-6 vardagar
The origins and development of the Church in Egypt remain one of the vexed problems of early Christian history. In his Schweich Lectures, delivered in 1977, Dr C. H. Roberts examines the evidence of the Christian papyri discovered in Egypt to see what light they cast on the problems and how far they support statements in our ancient authorities or the theories of modern scholars. Among matters discussed are the influence of Judaism and whether Gnosticism was really as powerful in the first three centuries in Egypt as is sometimes thought; particular attention is paid to the historical significance in these early manuscripts of the nomina sacra, the abbreviations of the divine names.

778 kr
Skickas inom 3-6 vardagar
The English estates of the Abbey of Holy Trinity, Caen included manors situated in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, East Anglia, and Wiltshire, which differed greatly in economic organisation and social structure. Among the records of estate administration are surveys describing the rents and services of tenants, the resources of the demesne, and the advance of cultivation in woodland and waste. The present volume contains surveys for the whole estate made in the reigns of Henry I and Henry II, thirteenth century custumals for Minchinhampton, Avening, and Felsted, and twenty-six charters and leases, some of which relate to property in London. They provide valuable evidence of social conditions and changing methods of estate exploitation, and are printed for the first time.

A Documentary Survey
AvOwen,Dorothy M. Owen
Inbunden, Engelska, 1984
1 172 kr
Skickas inom 3-6 vardagar
Lynn was a 'new' port of the late eleventh century, founded on the estates of the Bishop of Norwich. This volume includes transcripts or summaries of most of the documents available in original charters, cartularies, rentals, bede-rolls and the administrative records of the borough, for a study of the origin and topography of the town, and this is discussed and interpreted in the introduction. The scope of the volume also extends to evidence available for the religious, social and economic life of the town. It draws on gild statutes, poll-tax lists, customs accounts and toll lists, the court-rolls of the Bishop's liberty and a town-clerk's memorandum book. The introduction discusses the nature and extent of these courses and provides a brief analysis of most aspects of the medieval town.

With a Glossary and Linguistic Commentary by Peter McClure
AvWoodward,Donald Woodward
Inbunden, Engelska, 1984
1 062 kr
Skickas inom 3-6 vardagar
In the early 1640s Henry Best, a gentleman farmer of Elmswell in the East Riding of Yorkshire, composed an account of his farming practices. The resulting Farming Book provides a unique account of seventeenth-century farming, of the marketing of agricultural produce, and of rural customs. It is here published in a new transcription by Donald Woodward. In addition, a complete transcript of Henry Best's Memorandum Book is published for the first time; this volume gives details of a wide range of day-to-day transactions mainly during the period 1617 to 1645. The editor adds greatly to our knowledge of Henry Best, his family and estate in a substantial introduction, and much ancillary documentary evidence is provided in a series of appendices. The volume is rounded off by an extensive new glossary prepared by Peter McClure.

The Birth of the Codex
AvColin H. Roberts,T. C. Skeat
Häftad, Engelska, 1987
256 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
In The Codex, published in 1954, C.H. Roberts studied the process by which in the early centuries of our era the roll as the vehicle for literature was replaced by the codex, which has remained the format of the book ever since. New evidence that has accumulated in the last thirty years has set some of the problems in a new light and in this book, published here for the first time in paperback, the authors re-examine these and offer a different explanation for the remarkable part in the transformation played by the early Church.

Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
The Diary of Bulstrode Whitelocke covers his whole life, from his birth in 1605, until shortly before his death in 1675. Whitelocke was a distinguished lawyer and Member of Parliament, a keen musician and scholar, a bon viveur, and a family man who had three wives and seventeen children. His Diary provides descriptions of life at school, university and the inns of court, details of marriages and marriage settlements, his property dealings, salaries and pensions, the management and improvement of his estates, and his relations with tenants, builders and servants.Whitelocke knew most of the leading characters of the period personally. He held high offices as Keeper of the Great Seal, temporary Speaker of the House of Commons, and Lord President of the Council, and reveals in his Diary short insights into public affairs, notably during the Civil Wars and Interregnum. The volume is complemented by the publication of Miss Spalding's Contemporaries of Bulstrode Whitelocke, 1605-1675 (RSEH Vol XIV).

The Papers of Bulstrode Whitelocke, brought together from various sources, form an important archive - quite separate from his Diary - and much of it unpublished or even unknown to scholars. Ruth Spalding has selected about 1000 names from the Diary, assembled biographical details that elucidate the Diary references, and has worked into this framework much new material from Whitelocke's papers. Many entries shed light on the politics of the period, since Whitelocke knew nearly all the leading characters personally. There is also much information on the `unhonoured dead' - secretaries, servants, tenants, villagers, and petty officials. The volume complements Miss Spalding's edition of The Diary of Bulstrode Whitelocke, 1605-1675 (RSEH New Series XIII)

This account book of a small yeoman farmer in Lancashire, running from 1724 (just after his marriage) to his death in 1767, provides a record of expenditure on domestic, personal, and farming items. It is unique in offering a detailed view of household life and domestic economy in a stratum of society from which very few documents of any sort have survived.Shedding light on the informal economy of the locality, entries cover payment for services, clothing, household goods, seeds, farming equipment, servants, medical expenses, books and education. A computer-generated concordance provides a comprehensive listing of all references likely to be of interest to historians.

In 1775, a young Philadelphia Quaker was sent by his father to gather detailed information on business conditions in the British Isles. Fisher's travels took him throughout Britain and Ireland, even across the English Channel, and the journals that record his observations provide a fascinating and distinctive commentary on the economic and social life of the time. The travel journals are supplemented by Fisher's cameos of merchants in the major trading centres, with lists of all the goods handled. Dr Morgan's edition makes available a text that adds up to a late eighteenth-century version of Defoe's famous Tour.

This famous essay is now republished, with a new Introduction by James Joll, at a time when its discussion of the power of nationalism in European politics seems particularly relevant.Concentrating on the revolutions in central and eastern Europe, and the relations of Germans, Poles, and Slavs, Namier explains how 1848 inaugurated a new age, not of liberalism as many revolutionaries hoped, but of a nationalism that was to destroy liberal constitutionalism. As Professor Joll demonstrates in his Introduction, the essay also reveals much about the prejudices and passion underlying the historical writing of one of Britain's most prominent historians. The modern reader will find in the range and cogency of this book not only many shafts of light on the year 1848 itself, but also fresh insights into historical forces still at work in our own time.

Household accounts contain invaluable evidence on daily life, diet, hospitality, etiquette, travel, the arts, politics, as well as on medieval finance generally. In Part 1, Dr Woolgar's detailed introduction discusses these documents as a coherent body of records, and places them in the context of the administrative systems for which they were created. Their diplomatic forms and development are analysed and compared with those on the Continent, and an extensive glossary is provided to assist scholars in the study of these sources.Dr Woolgar has also carefully selected and edited the accounts of 28 households, to illustrate the full variety of texts that have survived. Diet accounts of 14 households are printed in Part 1, ranging from those of knights and earls to those of the higher clergy.Part 2 will contain texts from 14 more households - diet accounts (ii), cash, corn and stock accounts, wardrobe accounts - and a complete catalogue of extant medieval English household accounts.
