Business Communication Strategies teaches the vital everyday language typically used in all aspects of running a business, from being comfortable with small talk to effective teamwork on business plans and marketing strategies. Each of the 24 units deals with communication strategies (skills) that business people need in order to be successful communicators. These strategies include showing interest and appreciation, offering assistance, telephoning, making decisions, motivating others, running meetings, handling criticism, presenting ideas, writing resumes, interviewing, emailing, and many others.

The downloadable audio program (see ProLinguaLearning.com for details) features native speakers expressing in dialogs the discourse of everyday business communication. The free downloadable Teacher’s Handbook and Answer Key includes tips for using the material, complete scripts of the dialogs, answers to sequencing and matching exercises, and a section of "vocabulary cards" (sheets of 12 business-related terms that can be cut up and made into cards for practicing over 200 business terms that are used throughout the text).

Basic Conversation Strategies is a prequel to the intermediate -level Conversation Strategies. One significant difference is that Basic Conversation Strategies has an important listening component. Conversation is, after all, not just speaking; it also involves listening, and a major part of the approach in this book includes training learners to be good listeners.

There are three components to this material. The Student Workbook contains everything students will need to do the exercises, except the material they need to listen and respond to. This material is available as Downloadable Audio. The Student Workbook does not contain printed versions of the listening input because real conversation is not accompanied with sub-titles or closed captions. The printed version of the listening input is available in the Teacher's Edition, available at ProLinguaLearning.com, which is an essential component of Basic Conversation Strategies. The Teacher's Edition contains the entire Student Workbook and the complete scripts of all the listening input, plus teaching notes and suggestions, as well as feedback and evaluation forms.

The Downloadable Audio (visit ProLinguaLearning.com) has 67 listening exercises containing six types of exercises: 1) Listen and Fill- In, 2) Circle, 3) Choose, 4) Repeat, 5) Respond, and 6) Write.

Many of the audio-based exercises are in dialogue format, spoken by four native speakers. Although the Audio component is not essential (the teacher can speak the input), the material will be more effective and easier to manage if the students have access to the Audio.

Each page of this photocopiable book is focused on a single point of English grammar, from very basic matters such as subject-verb agreement with "to be," to complexities such as real and unreal conditional and reported speech.

There are three main types of exercises: question and answer, fill in the blank, and pair work. Many of the exercises are to be used in-class, but many may be assigned as homework.

On each handout, there is minimal explanation of grammatical structures and rules because, as the title suggests, the point is practice. As a practice book, it offers page upon page of focused work.

The 195 exercises are too numerous to list, but they are grouped in the following categories: 1) Basic Morphology, Phrase Structure, and Word Order, 2) To Be, 3) Present Tense, 4) Future Tense, 5) Modal Verbs, 6) Phrasal Verbs, 7) Other Verbal Structures, 8) Passive Voice, 9) The Noun Phrase, 10) Adjectives, 11) Adverbials, and 12) Clauses.

Surveys for Conversation features 64 photocopiable questionnaires that form the basis for truly interactive conversations about topics students care about, such as dating, friendship, music, pets, etc. For each topic, this no-prep resource for teachers also includes notes on vocabulary challenges, extension prompts and activities, writing topics, and a list of helpful websites.

Clear step-by-step, focused practice of 13 discussion skills: using rejoinders, asking follow-up questions, seeking/giving clarification, using comprehension checks, soliciting and using details, interrupting, expressing opinions, volunteering answers, referring to information and opinion sources, helping discussion leaders, and leading a discussion. Each unit builds on and recycles previous strategies. Work in real discussion formats: pairs, triads, small groups, large groups, whole class. Discussion topics are high-interest; no in depth background knowledge is needed.

Conversation strategies are techniques that help the speaker and listener keep a conversation going to its natural and desired conclusion. These skills supplement the linguistic and sociolinguistic skills most texts focus on: grammar, vocabulary, and usage. However, to develop strategic competence, students must learn the words, phrases, and conventions used as two speakers engage in the active give-and-take of conversation.

The strategies practiced in this book include 1) getting more information, 2) making comparisons, 3) correcting someone politely, 4) agreeing and disagreeing, 5) summarizing, 6) sharing information, and 7) making decisions.

Students also practice 1) polite forms, 2) rejoinders, 3) clarifications, 4) follow-up questions, 5) getting a response, 6) expressing probability, 7) interrupting, and 8) avoiding conversation killers.

The 29 pair and group activities help develop communicative competence. These fun, student-centered activities begin with controlled language and move to open, imaginative exchanges.

A one-of-a-kind picture dictionary, Lexicarry offers a fun, active, conversational approach to language learning. It is a book of wordless pictures designed to help learners build vocabulary and conversation skills in any second language using the American English word list in the book, a bilingual dictionary, one of the Lexicarry word lists, and/or someone who knows the language. There are 13 foreign language word lists available at ProLinguaLearning.com to use with this book for learners of languages other than English.

The book has 142 pages of full-color drawings illustrating functional language and vocabulary in 190 situational and topical contexts. This amounts to over 4500 everyday words and expressions. The pictures make conversation and interactive learning easy.

Although learners can use Lexicarry working on their own, they learn best by discussing the objects, places, and activities in the drawings, working together in pairs, as a class, or with a tutor or native speakers. The illustrations are not labeled, and this naturally challenges and excites students' imaginations and helps them retain the language.

There are seven sections to the book: 1) Functions, 2) Sequences of Actions, 3) Related Actions, 4) Operations, 5) Topics (vocabulary items related to one theme), 6) Places (scenes/ rooms and the things we find and do there), and 7) Proverbs and Sayings.

This 80-page easy-to-understand reader is one of 12 historical novels in the Hopes and Dreams series, whose diverse and fascinating characters, regardless of their ethnicity, face prejudice, danger, hardships, and setbacks, but survive with perseverance, a little bit of luck ,and a generous amount of love in their new home in the US.
