The Ivy Look A to Z is a celebration of the clothing and accessories of the Ivy Look from world authority on the style, Graham Marsh. First emerging in the Ivy League schools of America's East Coast during the 1950s and '60s, the Ivy Look has had a lasting sartorial impact on fashion and culture. Democratic, stylish, and comfortable, it has been embraced by presidents, film stars, businessmen, and hipsters alike. With its understated yet carefully curated components, the Ivy Look embodies an approachable correctness and laid-back confidence. Digging deep into the archives, this visual lexicon showcases all the Ivy essentials and how to wear them - including D for Desert Boots, L for Loafers, O for Oxford Shirts, M for Madras and T for Trench Coats. Each entry is accompanied by original illustrations and text by Marsh alongside period album covers, magazine advertisements, movie posters and photographs of Ivy icons such as Miles Davis, Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. Comprehensive and inspiring, The Ivy Look A to Z is an indispensable Ivy guide and a must for any coffee or bedside table.

Between the worldwide box-office success of his Dollars films - A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For A Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (1966) - and his untimely death in 1989 at the age of 60, Sergio Leone gave interviews to selected film journalists. He also wrote a series of thoughtful essays about his cinematic influences - and loves - such as Charlie Chaplin, Federico Fellini, Henry Fonda, Robert Aldrich and, of course, John Ford. To accompany his final film Once Upon a Time in America (1984) - 15 years in gestation - he published several articles about his obsessive quest to make the film, and how it eventually happened. Most of these interviews/writings have never before appeared in the English language, and as a collection they have never before appeared anywhere. SERGIO LEONE by Himself, compiled by Leone's acclaimed biographer Christopher Frayling, gathers together all his significant interviews, essays and articles, to create a director's eye view of a body of work which over the past half century has had a decisive influence on world cinema, especially action cinema. The book is profusely illustrated with previously unseen photographs from the Leone family collection and the Angelo Novi archive, both now housed in the Cineteca in Bologna. It also includes previously unpublished commentary from Leone's long-suffering producers. Much has been written by commentators about the films of Sergio Leone - some of it good, some bad and some ugly. Here at last it is the turn of the man himself - larger-than-life, short-fused, astonishingly cine-literate, and a born storyteller. SERGIO LEONE by Himself will be published in autumn 2024, coinciding with the sixtieth anniversary of the Italian release of A Fistful of Dollars.

1001 MOVIE POSTERS: DESIGNS OF THE TIMES is the most comprehensive collection of movie posters ever published, from world authority on the art form, Tony Nourmand. This 640-page tome spans more than a century of global imagery, from the colourful Parisian lithographs heralding the Lumiere brothers' first public film screening in 1896 to innovative posters for recent blockbusters such as Parasite and Barbie. This book is a must for film lovers and anyone interested in the power of advertising and design. Iconic posters for films such as Metropolis, King Kong, La Dolce Vita, The Man with the Golden Arm, Breakfast at Tiffany's, A Clockwork Orange, Goldfinger, Jaws, Trainspotting and Get Out sit alongside more unexpected artwork for films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Taxi Driver, The Birds and Judas and the Black Messiah, creating a time capsule of the creativity and inventiveness of past and present eras. There has always been a raw immediacy to film posters: provoking and enticing, shocking and seducing audiences across the threshold of the movie theatre. The artists tasked with communicating that have been at the forefront of design: ground-breaking visionaries such as Saul Bass, Paul Rand and Bill Gold; Eastern European artists using poetic, surreal and often disturbing imagery in highly original and subversive concepts; and modern studios taking a 360-degree approach to branding. Selected by editor Tony Nourmand, the feast of images in this compendium features posters from over 20 countries by hundreds of art directors and illustrators many credited and discussed here for the first time. The book is introduced by an essay from cultural historian Sir Professor Christopher Frayling and features informative commentary throughout by writer Alison Elangasinghe.

Blue Velvet is one of the most haunting and influential neo-noir films ever made: a dark journey beneath the manicured lawns of small-town America. In celebration of the fortieth anniversary of David Lynch's cult masterpiece, the film's makeup artist Jeff Goodwin - the 'man behind the ear' - takes readers behind the scenes with his rare personal archive of never-before-published Polaroids and first-hand memories from the set. Blue Velvet: A Polaroid Diary captures the strange beauty and creative alchemy that defined working with director David Lynch. 'I made two partial ears and one whole ear and took them into David's office and placed them on his desk for approval. He was like a kid! He picked them up and started playing with them.' Determined to make the prop disturbingly real, Goodwin turned to a then-unusual material for film work. 'I decided to make the new ears out of silicone to achieve... a little 'wiggle'... I was not aware until years later that I was, in fact, an early pioneer of silicone use in cinema.' From refining Laura Dern's luminous on-screen presence to shaping the grotesque menace of Dennis Hopper's Frank Booth, these photographs and recollections reveal the meticulous craft behind Lynch's dreamlike world and Goodwin's pivotal role in shaping the film's visual language. Along the way, he shares insider revelations - from near casting surprises involving Helen Mirren to on-set mishaps and the subtle tricks of the makeup artist's trade: 'Most of my makeup effects are a combination of makeup and magic.' Part visual archive, part behind-the-scenes memoir, this is a rare glimpse inside the making of a landmark of cinema - one that, as the author remembers, was 'the genuine article: a true labour of love.'

DENIM: THE FABRIC THAT BUILT AMERICA 1935-1944 is a beautiful and irresistible portrait of an iconic cloth and a celebration of style's most enduring inspiration. It is said that over 80 percent of the planet have owned an item of denim clothing. We spend hours crafting the insouciant turn of a hem and the casual roll of a collar; we spend our hard-earned money on carefully weathered, faded denim. And here is our original inspiration: defined over 70 years ago by hard-working people in their hard-working labours in a timeless look that has never gone out of style. In black and white and colour, these are photographs of ordinary Americans relentlessly toiling - hands, face, boots and denim dirty - to push America out of the Great Depression into the prosperity of its post-War years. And all wearing the toughest utility fabric available to them - denim. Levi's, Wrangler, Lee, OshKosh, Carhartt - all the iconic American brands and more are here on workwear overalls, jeans, jackets and shirts. Americans of every race, young and old - the images are reproduced here in exquisite print quality. In such context, the detail of the denim - heft of the weave; white stitching stark against blue; selvedge edges; turned-up hems - is seen as startingly modern. The photographs in this coffee table volume are taken from the archive of the Farm Security Administration and O'ce of War Information. The archive holds over 170,000 images and some of the most recognisable photographs of the twentieth century, such as Lange's 'Migrant Mother'. Many more have rarely been seen. The archive holds well-known stories and untold histories, but it has never been looked at through the prism of fashion history before. An extraordinary feat of curation, 250 images have been discovered in the hidden depths of the archive to form this book. It is written and art-directed by denim historian and vintage-clothing expert Graham Marsh, who is responsible for the seminal publication, Denim: From Cowboys to Catwalk. Marsh places the photographs in their historical context and discusses the clothing with an infectious turn of phrase that is authoritative, humorous, and with an obsessive attention to detail. The treasure trove of images is edited by Tony Nourmand, who has a peerless curatorial ability to unearth priceless gems from archives both famous and unknown.

Magnum's David Hurn is one of Britain's most influential documentary photographers. His work is characterised by a quiet observation and singular insight, his natural inclination towards ordinary people in their everyday lives. In 2016, Hurn casually started an Instagram account to allow him to share constructive photography advice: tips, books and recommendations. His stream developed to include reflections on photographs from his 60-year career; his ennui during the endless days of lockdown; the work of fellow photographers; and a grappling with questions of AI and artifice in photography. There are photographs here from the Hungarian revolution in 1956, on the set of The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night in 1964, trips to Arizona between 1979 and 2001, Halloween celebrations in his local Welsh village during the pandemic, and many more. A love of the land is also evident in much of his work. Printed in exquisite quality, the large book format does justice to Hurn's photographs, while also elevating his words. An expert in his field, Hurn has no pretension, and he is generous in sharing his journey as a photographer. The theme of authenticity is woven through the pages; Hurn's plea to photographers to allow the world to be what it is' or at least to be honest when creating a fictional image. Hurn writes, 'It seems to me that in whatever form of communication, be it painting, sculpture, music, dance, photography, even speech, our job is to try to communicate to others as honestly, accurately, authentically, what we saw, felt, thought, at a particular time.' Bringing these individual Instagrams from the past seven years together in a compendium has its own considered beauty. The immediacy of a social media post is here turned into a more expansive and contemplative diary from a true master of his art.

Ever since the dawn of the sound era, Hollywood has made a series of elaborate feature films about the lives of the great visual artists: including (among many others) Charles Laughton as Rembrandt; George Sanders as Gauguin; Jose Ferrer as Toulouse-Lautrec; Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh; Charlton Heston as Michelangelo-and, more recently on a smaller scale, Jeffrey Wright as Jean-Michel Basquiat; Derek Jacobi as Francis Bacon; Ed Harris as Jackson Pollock; Salma Hayek as Frida Kahlo (at last a female artist!); and many others, pitched at more niche audiences. These films have represented the lives of artists in ways that 'chime' with public expectations and public attitudes-with stories that take audiences on a journey from garret to gallery to glamour to gutter to grave. So, although they are often dismissed out of hand by art historians and curators, the films can tell us a great deal about how art and artists have entered the cultural bloodstream of modern Western societies. What can they reveal about the changing public image of the visual artist? What assumptions did Hollywood screenwriters and filmmakers make about awareness of the history of art in society at large? And what assumptions did they reflect/ promote about the artists' private lives-as well as their gender and ethnicity? What was the background to the making of these films? And what impact have they had on the real art world - its exhibitions, auctions, collections, and artists? There has never before been a full-length book devoted to the fascinating story of THE HOLLYWOOD HISTORY OF ART, in all its glory. This generously illustrated volume will fill this surprising gap. It is based on many years of archive research, as well as on interviews with participants and the author's long experience of teaching art history. It will appeal to museum and gallery-goers, readers interested in the history of art and of film, film buffs, collectors, viewers of TV miniseries and films about artists-and of course those with fond memories of Jose Ferrer wandering the streets of Montmartre on his knees, Kirk Douglas gritting his teeth and being attacked by crows, Charlton Heston swallowing a mouthful of paint as he frescoes the ceiling of a 70mm Sistine Chapel, Ed Harris in a T-shirt dripping brushfuls of paint onto a huge canvas and Salma Hayek being transported at speed in a four-poster bed to a contemporary art gallery in Mexico City...

The French New Wave is one of the most important movements in the history of film. Its fresh energy and vision changed the cinematic landscape and it has had a seminal impact on pop culture. The poster artists tasked with selling these Nouvelle Vague films to the masses were at the forefront of a revolution in art, graphic design and photography. This volume is a visual celebration of their explosive and ground-breaking poster art.

'Shooting live music performances is something few photographers do really well. I just happened to discover one day that I was pretty good at it.' Neal Preston is one of the greatest rock photographers of all time. Exhilarated and Exhausted is a no-holds-barred complete retrospective of his more than 40-year career. Produced in collaboration with Neal, it is introduced by a foreword by Neal's close friend, the renowned writer and director Cameron Crowe, and an introduction by photo editor Dave Brolan. Neal's photographs vibrate with a palpable and inimitable intensity. As Crowe observes, 'You can feel the music, the audience, the desperate need to find a place in the world, all of it, in these photos because they were curated by the guy who felt it all when he pressed the button on the camera. They're snapshots of what's most elusive - truth and fun and for that one moment, on that one night, the thrill of belonging.' This exceptional volume is a who's who of rock royalty. Neal was the official tour photographer for Led Zeppelin, Queen, Bruce Springsteen and The Who, and has also extensively shot The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson and many more. The book includes his portraits, backstage moments, live performances, post-performance highs and lows, and outtakes. This is the first time Neal has allowed unrestricted access to his legendary archive - considered one of the music industry's most significant and extensive photo collections. The images are further brought alive by Neal's accompanying text - a mind-bending insight into life on the road as a rock and roll photographer.
