1001 MOVIE POSTERS: DESIGNS OF THE TIMES is the most comprehensive collection of movie posters ever published, from world authority on the art form, Tony Nourmand. This 640-page tome spans more than a century of global imagery, from the colourful Parisian lithographs heralding the Lumiere brothers' first public film screening in 1896 to innovative posters for recent blockbusters such as Parasite and Barbie. This book is a must for film lovers and anyone interested in the power of advertising and design. Iconic posters for films such as Metropolis, King Kong, La Dolce Vita, The Man with the Golden Arm, Breakfast at Tiffany's, A Clockwork Orange, Goldfinger, Jaws, Trainspotting and Get Out sit alongside more unexpected artwork for films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Taxi Driver, The Birds and Judas and the Black Messiah, creating a time capsule of the creativity and inventiveness of past and present eras. There has always been a raw immediacy to film posters: provoking and enticing, shocking and seducing audiences across the threshold of the movie theatre. The artists tasked with communicating that have been at the forefront of design: ground-breaking visionaries such as Saul Bass, Paul Rand and Bill Gold; Eastern European artists using poetic, surreal and often disturbing imagery in highly original and subversive concepts; and modern studios taking a 360-degree approach to branding. Selected by editor Tony Nourmand, the feast of images in this compendium features posters from over 20 countries by hundreds of art directors and illustrators many credited and discussed here for the first time. The book is introduced by an essay from cultural historian Sir Professor Christopher Frayling and features informative commentary throughout by writer Alison Elangasinghe.

DENIM: THE FABRIC THAT BUILT AMERICA 1935-1944 is a beautiful and irresistible portrait of an iconic cloth and a celebration of style's most enduring inspiration. It is said that over 80 percent of the planet have owned an item of denim clothing. We spend hours crafting the insouciant turn of a hem and the casual roll of a collar; we spend our hard-earned money on carefully weathered, faded denim. And here is our original inspiration: defined over 70 years ago by hard-working people in their hard-working labours in a timeless look that has never gone out of style. In black and white and colour, these are photographs of ordinary Americans relentlessly toiling - hands, face, boots and denim dirty - to push America out of the Great Depression into the prosperity of its post-War years. And all wearing the toughest utility fabric available to them - denim. Levi's, Wrangler, Lee, OshKosh, Carhartt - all the iconic American brands and more are here on workwear overalls, jeans, jackets and shirts. Americans of every race, young and old - the images are reproduced here in exquisite print quality. In such context, the detail of the denim - heft of the weave; white stitching stark against blue; selvedge edges; turned-up hems - is seen as startingly modern. The photographs in this coffee table volume are taken from the archive of the Farm Security Administration and O'ce of War Information. The archive holds over 170,000 images and some of the most recognisable photographs of the twentieth century, such as Lange's 'Migrant Mother'. Many more have rarely been seen. The archive holds well-known stories and untold histories, but it has never been looked at through the prism of fashion history before. An extraordinary feat of curation, 250 images have been discovered in the hidden depths of the archive to form this book. It is written and art-directed by denim historian and vintage-clothing expert Graham Marsh, who is responsible for the seminal publication, Denim: From Cowboys to Catwalk. Marsh places the photographs in their historical context and discusses the clothing with an infectious turn of phrase that is authoritative, humorous, and with an obsessive attention to detail. The treasure trove of images is edited by Tony Nourmand, who has a peerless curatorial ability to unearth priceless gems from archives both famous and unknown.

The French New Wave is one of the most important movements in the history of film. Its fresh energy and vision changed the cinematic landscape and it has had a seminal impact on pop culture. The poster artists tasked with selling these Nouvelle Vague films to the masses were at the forefront of a revolution in art, graphic design and photography. This volume is a visual celebration of their explosive and ground-breaking poster art.

A fresh and expanded take on Leonard Freed's classic 1980 book, this new edition is the definitive collection of Freed's photographs of the New York police department during the turbulent 1970s. Magnum photographer Freed worked alongside the New York police for several years, documenting the gritty reality of life 'on the beat' at a notorious time of soaring crime and great social unrest, with the city near bankruptcy. Of his near-decade with the police department, Freed observed that 'What I saw were average people doing a sometimes boring, sometimes corrupting, sometimes dangerous and ugly and unhealthy job'. Freed's nuanced essay has a poignancy and grace, capturing the camaraderie of officers alongside the people they are hired to protect. Freed accompanied the NYPD on murder investigations, drug raids, public demonstrations and community outreach initiatives, as well as documenting the ordinary daily grind of the job. This re-edited and re-designed take on Freed's original book features several unseen photographs from the archive. It is a celebration of this complex and compassionate body of work, which has a social resonance and relevance in today's climate.

With its singular focus on the very best portrait photography of the Film Noir era, every page of this coffee table volume is rich in brooding atmosphere. The portraits were taken by premiere studio photographers like Robert Coburn, Ernest Bachrach and A.L. Whitey. Their remarkable ability to exaggerate the play of shadow and light to dramatic effect is the reason that their work still has the same ability to arrest the viewer as it did in the 1940s. The photographs remain some of the most innovative and striking portraits in the history of cinema.

Of all film genres, 'X' is possibly the one that lends itself best to the use of posters as a promotional medium. Screaming taglines, provocative titles and scantily-clad forms are all elements that can be used to best advantage in poster form. They are wonderful period pieces that evoke the temptations and taboos of a bygone age. This magnificent coffee table book is the 10th anniversary, new, expanded, 'complete volume' of Nourmand and Marsh's bestselling release, with accompanying text by renowned writer Peter Doggett.

Back by popular demand, this stunning new Evergreen Edition of the worldwide best-seller delivers a pictorial celebration of the look and attitude of 'Ivy'. Exhaustively compiled, this coffee table volume takes an in-depth look at how 'Ivy' established itself.
