The Spotlight Series is a complete set of worksheets and activities to improve spelling skills, reading accuracy, grammar and phonological awareness. The series explores blends, suffixes and phonics through uncluttered, enjoyable exercises that are both classroom and attention friendly. The puzzles and games have been tested to engage as well as teach. Each book is deliberately non-age specific, allowing simple differentiation from early structured programmes through to Key Stage 3 and on to Adult Learning. Although the books offer valuable assistance to those with speech and communication difficulties, the activities are an excellent mainstream resource to promote language skills. All the worksheets in the Spotlight Series titles are photocopiable within one educational establishment, and are spiral-bound for strength and ease-of-use. Guidelines for teachers are included, as well as answers, where appropriate, to the worksheets.

The Lifeboat Read & Spell Scheme (also known as 'Launch the Lifeboat to Read and Spell'). A highly-structured, multi-sensory scheme of lessons to help dyslexic children - and adults - to read, write and spell. Book 1 is for the beginner. It introduces the alphabet and distinguishes the vowels and the consonants in a series of individually designed lessons. This stage obviously requires teaching support. Later lessons focus upon the letters i, n, p, s, t, a, b and d, which give rise to blends 'sn', 'sp', 'st', '-nd' and '-nt'. Lessons 6, 8, 9 and 10 introduce the learner to the lesson format, which remains consistent throughout the remaining books.

The objectives of Book 1 are to establish good basic habits of paper positioning and pencil hold, and to develop the fine motor skills needed for accurate, consistent writing. The book takes the young writer from basic pencil handling and co-ordination exercises through to formation of letters and simple short words. The 28 worksheets contain an entertaining mix of games and puzzles, which parents (or grandparents!) and child will enjoy doing together. Billy Beetle, Sam Spider, Willie Woodlouse and Sally Snail lead the left-handed child through the worksheets. The illustrations are aimed primarily at the 6-7 year-old, when many left-handed children become more conscious of the difference between their writing style and that of their right-handed peers. However, the overall design is suitable for any age: we've heard from grateful users nearer to retirement age than to next year's Year 2...

The second book of the Left Hand Writing Skills series, containing a further 28 worksheets, begins with revision of the essential letter formation exercises in Book 1. The following worksheets focus on the flow of letters into word formation. Through extensive practice with patterns, different forms of letter-joining and full word formation, the left-handed writer should have begun to establish the fundamental good habits of hold, position and control which handwriting requires. The antics of Pencil Pat and his gang keep up the level of enjoyment and satisfaction as the child works through these exercises.

The third book of the Left Hand Writing Skills series consolidates the development of good writing habits. The writer can now apply all that has been learned to writing with a pen. Ink is the real test of success for the left-handed writer! First, to create words which are accurately formed and legible, and then to avoid spoiling them by smudging as the left hand follows the pen across the page. Successful smudge-free writing can overcome the frustration of so many left-handers. Essay-writing, homework, and other essential written work can all become a source of satisfaction: no longer a cause of disappointment. The 27 worksheets provide further variety in activities and interest, all linked to handwriting. From early Egyptian tablets to Leonardo's curious mirror-writing, to invitations, shopping lists and menu cards. Fascinating illustrations and full colour presentation once again keep the interest of the left-handed student while the correct left hand writing habits are finally fully absorbed.

The activities in this well-established, highly-regarded and widely-used book can assist with a wide range of conditions, including diagnoses of Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, or Attention Deficit Hyper-activity Disorder (ADHD). Following a valuable introductory background, Take Time provides a series of thoroughly tested and purposeful exercises that tackle fundamental developmental problems behind learning difficulties. The number of children who are hampered by language impairment in speaking, reading, writing or spelling is surprisingly high. Provided that appropriate action is taken, however, such problems will not usually inhibit a child's long term progress. Professional advice and involvement is important, but parents themselves can actively participate in the process of helping the child to overcome difficulties by using this book. The main features of Take Time are: 'Pointers' to clarify areas of difficulty, including timing and rhythm, direction, spatial orientation and movement, sequencing, laterality and fine motor control needed for clear speech and successful writing and reading. general exercises for co-ordination and body awareness. specific exercises to help with particular areas of difficulty and individual situations. The main aim of the range of innovative movement exercises and other activities described in Take Time is that they can be tailored specifically to individual situations. The book acts as a step-by-step guide for parents, teachers, therapists and helpers, pin-pointing and encouraging the use of particular exercises to help develop motor control, co-ordination, directional awareness, balance and rhythm, yet in an enjoyable and holistic way. It is this process which has resulted in the enormous popularity of the book, especially for use by parents. It is recommended by many centres concerned with dyslexia, dyspraxia and other difficulties. The book also contains details of useful resource equipment, books and contact addresses.
