China and India are emerging in terms of their economics, demographics and military forces. This has caused speculations to abound around how these two giants of Asia can get along, affecting not just the region but the world at large. The book develops a “Silk Road Ethos” perspective, which examines the notion of `difference without alienation’ in order to create a third space of “China-India” wherein learning, circulation and co-constitution produces rich, complex, and cosmopolitan legacies. The book uses these new concepts to examine how the exchange of trade, commerce and cultural products, and to explore how the role of military and security practices, can be interrogated to better understand the relationships between India and China. It shows where, how, and why the complementaries between these nations can defuse, if not transform, the conflicts, contradictions, and challenges that currently beset each.

For over fifty years the concept of memory has played a crucial role in a large number of academic and societal debates. The Work of Forgetting: Or, How Can We Make the Future Possible? draws attention to the limits of the academic field of memory studies. It argues that the faculty of memory offers an inadequate response to the challenges of the present. The book sets up a dialogue between the philosophies of forgetting that underlie the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, Walter Benjamin and Gilles Deleuze, and the philosophies of memory that inform the work of Sigmund Freud, Martin Heidegger and Hannah Arendt. It builds on the idea that history is inseparable from a type of transience that cannot be counter-acted by the preserving work of memory and develops a new understanding of the phenomenon of forgetting in which the passage of time is asserted in thought and thus made productive.

Media, Culture and the Environmental Turn approaches the broad range of debates around the growth of academic interest in the environment from a critical cultural studies perspective. Paying close attention to public debates surrounding the environment it examines the role played by various forms of media in developing and expanding notions relating to concepts of nature and the natural. Chapters will range widely from the beginnings of distinctly `modern’ environmental concerns in works such as Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (1962), through area case studies including the complex situation of a country like Bangladesh, to more thematic concerns such as deserts and oceans and worlds `without’ elements currently present. Chapters will examine contemporary strands of activism and global and local debates around `climate change’ and its implications. The book covers ecological ethics, eco-criticism, `slow violence’, `carbon democracy’ and the environmental implications of modern media themselves. In addition, it examines how such discourses have come to be problematised and politicised and fought over in the public domain. Ultimately, the problematic of the book will situate the debates at the transnational level and attempt to describe and `imagine’ new forms of post-national, transglobal solidarities and the forms of human future implied in their emergence.
