Ten years ago a group of experts assembled in Chicago to develop a consensus on the management of conditions previously described as intersex. The consequences of this consensus have been far reaching, including a change in nomenclature, the development of greater collaboration across geographical boundaries, and a move towards greater involvement of patients and parents. Moreover, an international registry was established, as well as research and clinical networks. This book brings together a thorough overview on all these topics. Furthermore, the major technological advances in diagnostic genetic and biochemical capabilities over the past 10 years are outlined in detail. Offering a comprehensive update on various aspects of disorders of sex development (DSD), this book will be essential reading to all clinicians who are involved in delivering health care to patients with a DSD, as well as scientists involved in biomedical research related to DSD.

Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor in children, with the highest incidence in children aged under 5 years. 'Fast Facts: Neuroblastoma' reviews the epidemiology and what is understood thus far about the pathogenesis of neuroblastoma. The book then dives into the various ways in which neuroblastoma may present and outlines the diagnostic studies needed to complete workup. It includes both a review of prognostic factors and disease risk stratification, and a comprehensive overview of treatment regimens for low-, intermediate- and high-risk disease.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide, but it is unusual among solid tumors in that many men die with, rather than of, the disease. This raises challenges in terms of deciding if, when, and how to intervene to control tumor growth and spread inorder to extend survival without compromising quality of life. The many developments in the field since the last edition of this book include continuing studies to improve detection and monitoring of the disease, with the evaluation of MRI for screening and prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-PET/CT for staging. Treatment options have also continued to improve and expand for all stages of the disease with the development of ultrahypofractionated radiotherapy, oral LHRH antagonists, PARP inhibitors and lutetium-177 PSMA-617 radioligand therapy.

The book comprehensively discusses Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation (MIH), exploring whether it is a recent phenomenon or a newly recognized issue. It details developmental defects of enamel and the clinical characteristics of hypomineralised enamel. The book addresses the challenges of using scoring systems for MIH assessment and emphasizes the importance of comprehensive patient evaluation, including oral clinical records and behavior assessment. The impact of MIH on quality of life is discussed, alongside the post-eruptive breakdown of demarcated opacities. The prevalence and distribution of MIH and deciduous tooth hypomineralisation are covered, along with systemic and environmental risk factors and genetic theories. The book also addresses hypersensitivity and its management. It questions whether MIH is a risk factor for dental caries and if it is possible to remineralise hypomineralised enamel. The use of fissure sealants for managing hypersensitivity and post-eruptive breakdown in MIH-affected molars is discussed, along with adhesive challenges, esthetic restoration, and restorative possibilities for severely affected molars. Finally, the book highlights the rationale behind the extraction of hypomineralised first molars, the cost-effectiveness of MIH management, and the role of the internet in obtaining and sharing MIH-related information.

It is more important than ever to consider trends in nutrition across the world, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the wide discrepancies in access to healthcare, good nutrition, and health outcomes. The 98th Nestlé Nutrition Institute Workshop was delivered in October 2022 in collaboration with the International Academy of Nutritional Educators and NNedPro Global Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health, and focussed on the personal and research experiences of the speakers.Speakers included international leaders in nutrition throughout the lifespan, with a focus on optimising dietary quality to promote health and wellbeing. Good nutrition is vital in the first 1,000 days of life, particularly for shaping immune responses but this extends through to much later in life, when appropriate nutritional support can help keep vulnerable people out of hospital and living independently at home. The pandemic also made us take stock of the burden of malnutrition, both over and under nutrition, and health inequalities worldwide. This multidisciplinary workshop provided a platform to reflect on, and discuss what we have learned previously, as well as looking forwards to the future of global health and nutrition and considering how innovative digital technologies could be harnessed to progress this field.

This Handbook takes the reader through the entire field of pediatric thrombosis and hemostasis and has been updated since the 2nd edition with considerable new information and elements missing in previous editions. The Handbook begins with an overview of the history of pediatric thrombosis and hemostasis, followed by a concise explanation of the complex pathophysiology of thrombosis and hemostasis. It follows with chapters focused on disorders of hemostasis in children from neonates to adolescents. Subsequent chapters are focused on thrombotic complications in children together with workup and management of thrombophilias in children. New chapters on bleeding in the adolescent girl and on management of children on mechanical circulatory support (ECMO/VAD) have been added. There is also a new chapter focused on hemostatic and thrombotic challenges in children with vascular anomalies, as pediatric hemostasis and thrombosis clinicians are increasingly being asked to manage children with these conditions. This updated Handbook is intended for health care professionals involved in the assessment and care of children with inherited and acquired bleeding and thrombotic disorders to inform and facilitate diagnostic/treatment decisions. This includes general and specialist pediatricians, in particular intensivists, neonatologists, cardiologists/cardiac surgeons, rheumatologists, nephrologists, and hematologists/oncologists, as well as medical trainees, residents, fellows, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists.

This dermatology book is different, it brings to the fore the number of variables in morphology in skin of color, resulting in a long shopping list of differential diagnoses, which will serve as a ready reckoner for students, registrars, postgraduates, nurses, and general practitioners who are likely to encounter patients of color. Drawing on the latest scientific research and clinical expertise, the authors shed light on the incidence, presentation, and treatment of dermatoses in skin of color, for a patient population who have historically been underserved by the medical community.

Urogenital atrophy is caused by low levels of oestrogen and is mostly associated with the menopause. Symptoms can include a dry vagina and thinner vulval skin which leads to painful sex and bladder problems. The condition is very common although many women mistakenly believe the symptoms are an inevitable part of ageing and do not seek treatment. A range of treatments are available that can alleviate many of the symptoms. This booklet aims to help you understand your options, so that you can talk to your doctors, nurses and medical team about your symptoms and possible treatment.

'Fast Facts: The Gut Microbiome', though pithy and concise, is amazingly comprehensive and takes the reader through all major aspects of the human gut microbiome and microbiome science. The depth of Professor Shanahan’s knowledge of the science of the microbiome is evident throughout but what transforms this volume from a mere recitation of what we know to a truly critical and accessible exposition on what matters is the critical eye of the clinician who must make decisions that will affect a patient's health.

The primary purpose of this Telehealth Guideline is to provide the physicians who will be managing patients virtually, with a summary of the best available evidence for the virtual management of very common conditions among adults. These guidelines are presented in a format that comprises clinical history/symptoms, differential diagnosis, investigations and management. Identification of ‘red flags’ or serious conditions associated with the condition is an essential part of these guidelines as it helps the physician to manage patients safely and appropriately by referrals, if indicated during the virtual telehealth assessment, to ER, family physicians, or specialists for face-to-face assessment.

This groundbreaking book encapsulates fresh insights from the 99th Nestlé Nutrition Institute Workshop in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in February 2023, where experts discussed the changes in the nutrition landscape brought about by the challenging times of the pandemia and globalization, including the future trajectories of child nutrition. This book delves into the profound impact of early nutrition on lifelong health and explores the intricate mechanisms of nutrition programming and the important role of human milk. It addresses the critical interplay between nutrition and epigenetic modifications, how this shapes gene expression and long-term health outcomes and emphasizes the importance of the microbiome and its modulators such as HMOs and how they support the development of the immune system in early life.Amidst the still unfolding longer-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the authors examine the bidirectional relationship between the virus and nutrition, highlighting strategies to mitigate disease severity through optimal nutrition interventions. Additionally, the book tackles the rising prevalence of food allergies, and discusses how the shift in guidelines on food allergy prevention supports the early introduction of allergens rather than avoidance as well as dietary patterns and current diets’ roles in reducing the risk of certain non-communicable diseases. The book heralds a new era in pediatric nutrition – one that embraces personalized nutrition interventions, the transformative potential of digital health, and the principles of sustainable nutrition to ensure health-promoting dietary practices. It also explores the burgeoning role of artificial intelligence in identifying new biomarkers and developing predictive models for pediatric health.
