It was front-page news throughout the country - the largest gathering of Union and Confederate veterans ever held. “[It] will be talked about and written about as long as the American people boast of the dauntless courage of Gettysburg,” declared a woman who accompanied her father to the reunion. But as the years passed, the memorable event was all but forgotten. John Hopkins’s The World Will Never See the Like: The Gettysburg Reunion of 1913 goes a long way toward making sure the world will remember. The 1913 Gettysburg reunion is a story of 53,000 old comrades and former foes reunited, and of the tension, even half a century later, between competing narratives of reconciliation and remembrance. For seven days the old soldiers lived under canvas in the stifling heat on a 280-acre encampment run by the U.S. Army. They swapped stories, debated still-simmering controversies about the battle, and fed tall tales to gullible reporters. On July 3, the aging survivors of Pickett’s Division and the Philadelphia Brigade shook hands across the wall on Cemetery Ridge, in the reunion’s climactic photo op. Some of the battle’s leading personalities were in attendance including Union III Corps commander Dan Sickles, who at 92 was still eager to explain to anyone who would listen the indispensable role he had played in the Union victory. Also present was Helen Dortch Longstreet, the widow of Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, who devoted her life and considerable energies to defending the reputation of her general. Both wrote articles from the reunion that were syndicated in newspapers across the country. There was even a cameo appearance by a young and as yet unknown cavalry officer named George S. Patton Jr. Hopkins fills his marvelous account with detail from the letters, diaries, and published accounts of Union and Confederate veterans, the extensive archival records of the reunion’s organizers, and the daily stories filed by the scores of reporters who covered it.The World Will Never See the Like offers the first full story of this extraordinary event’s genesis and planning, the obstacles overcome on the way to making it a reality, its place in the larger narrative of sectional reunion and reconciliation, and the individual stories of the veterans who attended. Every reader interested in Gettysburg will find this a welcome addition to their library.

Steve Eden provides a meticulous tactical analysis of the opening, brutal hours of the Civil War’s bloodiest single day. Set within the broader Maryland Campaign, this groundbreaking work plunges readers into the chaos of September 17, 1862. It reveals a Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, under Robert E. Lee, in grave peril. With nearly half his forces exhausted and straggling, Lee confronted George McClellan’s Army of the Potomac—a Union force poised for a decisive victory that famously slipped from its grasp.Crisis at Antietam: The Cornfield and West Woods and the Opening Rounds of the Civil War’s Bloodiest Battle, September 17, 1862 intensely focuses on operations on the Confederate left, uncovering critical missed opportunities, profound command failures, and the unpredictable hand of sheer chance. As fighting raged through the Miller Cornfield and West Woods, it quickly spiraled beyond command control. Officers often failed to restore order amid the maelstrom, regiments and brigades acted independently, pushing forward without orders or full awareness of the battle’s unfolding horror. Three times, Union forces drove the Confederate front to the precipice of collapse, only for the Rebels to miraculously rally, stabilizing their fragile lines against overwhelming odds.Drawing on extensive original sources—including memoirs, official reports, and soldier letters—and his own invaluable combat experience as a retired Army officer and former West Point military history instructor, Steve Eden offers fresh, authoritative insights. His work challenges even seasoned readers to fundamentally reconsider the traditional narrative of that pivotal, bloody September day, exposing the raw, brutal reality of command and combat at Antietam.

The final installment of Adolfo Ovies’s groundbreaking The Boy Generals trilogy races from the Shenandoah Valley to Appomattox with the rapidity of a headlong cavalry charge. The turbulent events of the closing months of the Civil War serve as a backdrop for the increasingly dysfunctional—and bitter—relationship between George Armstrong Custer and Wesley Merritt. The flamboyant Custer and the stoic Merritt were bound to clash. The Boy Generals scrutinizes their methods of discipline, their exercise of authority, and their “spirited rivalry.” It was an association that progressed from distaste to acrimony and finally to outright insubordination on Custer’s part. The boy cavalier was a firm believer in the shock value of the mounted charge. Merritt maintained that the horse was but a means of transporting the trooper to the battlefield, where he would fight on foot with his carbine. The difference in their tactical philosophies is highlighted by the bloody battles that ensued after Philip H. Sheridan’s ascension to command Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864. Meticulously researched chapters based on significant firsthand archival sources narrate the actions of the cavalry at Winchester, Tom’s Brook, Cedar Creek, and Waynesboro. The Boy Generals: George Custer, Wesley Merritt, and the Cavalry of the Army of the Potomac, from the Shenandoah Valley to the Surrender at Appomattox is an uncompromising examination of the darker aspects of the manner in which the war in the Valley unfolded. General Ulysses Grant’s orders to Sheridan to “eat out Virginia clear and clean” fell on the shoulders of the two “boy generals.” The brutality of the irregular warfare that lurked in the rear of the Army of the Shenandoah is addressed in a blow-by-blow accounting of depredations and retaliation.Sheridan’s troopers rejoined Grant’s army around Richmond. Following the breakthrough at Petersburg on April 2, 1864, Sheridan’s cavalry struck west. The battles of Dinwiddie Courthouse (March 31), Five Forks (April 1), and Sailor’s Creek (April 6)—the latter referred to as “Black Thursday” in the annals of the Army of Northern Virginia—paved the way for the eventual surrender of Robert E. Lee’s storied Virginia army. The Boy Generals captures Merritt and Custer as they ride the crest of a wave of glory in one of the most dysfunctional yet influential relationships in the Army of the Potomac. It is impossible to fully understand cavalry operations in the Eastern Theater without understanding the dynamic between these two commanders.

In early October 1861, United States warships entered the Head of Passes, where the Mississippi River’s multiple entrances converge into a single channel. The occupation simplified the blockade by enabling a handful of ships to seal off the “father of waters” and cut off supplies to New Orleans. Confederate Capt. George N. Hollins recognized the danger, assembled a makeshift flotilla, and launched a surprise attack on the enemy vessels. Neil P. Chatelain’s Ironclad Ambush: Confederates Strike Lincoln's Mississippi River Blockade at the Head of Passes, October 12, 1861, is the first book-length treatment of this pivotal naval action. The Battle of the Head of Passes on October 12 marked the Civil War’s first major fleet engagement. The Southern privateer ironclad ram Manassas rammed USS Richmond, and as the Federals retreated toward the Gulf, two blockaders ran aground and crews abandoned ship as Confederate gunboats closed in. The clash represented the Confederacy’s first major naval victory, the first use of an ironclad in North American waters, and the first direct challenge to Abraham Lincoln’s blockade. The battle quickly became mired in confusion and conflicting accounts. Outdated technologies—sailing ships, fire rafts, and rams—collided with modern innovations like screw-propelled steamers, telegraph communications, and ironclads. The fog of war led officers and enlisted men to misinterpret orders, as many historians have misinterpreted the facts. Some commanders excelled and earned promotions; others faltered, appeared drunk, or suffered breakdowns.Lingering questions persist: Why did U.S. forces initially enter the Head of Passes? Why did Hollins seek to counter them? Which ships were involved? Why did two blockading crews abandon their vessels mid-battle? Why did the Confederates withdraw yet claim victory? And why does this seemingly minor, often-overlooked engagement matter?Award-winning historian Neil P. Chatelain’s Ironclad Ambush scrutinizes every previous account of the battle, firsthand archival material, and period newspapers. Drawing on voices from all sides—including ship captains, junior officers, enlisted sailors, lighthouse keepers, and civilians across southeastern Louisiana—he unravels the complexities and contradictions of early Civil War coastal and riverine naval operations. Everyone with an interest in naval warfare will find this book invaluable.

As a repository for old soldiers’ writings, The National Tribune is unequaled yet remains mostly unused. Indeed, it is so good one might call it the Confederate Veteran for Billy Yank. From 1877 to 1943, The National Tribune served as a compendium for Union veteran reminiscences, war yarns, and postbellum reflections. The firsthand treasure-trove began as an eight-page monthly newspaper in 1881 and within a few years it became a weekly. The Washington-based paper was founded by George E. Lemon, a veteran of the 125th New York. Initially an advocate for Union veteran pensions, The National Tribune hit its stride when it began publishing articles about the war penned by the Northern soldiers themselves.Within three years John McElroy, a Union veteran with editing experience and the author of a dramatic memoir about his confinement at Andersonville (1879), assumed the reins as managing editor. His keen eye for detail and deep connections elevated the quality and quantity of the content and resulted in the publication of thousands of exclusive firsthand accounts. The National Tribune’s final issue was on December 30, 1943. By that late date, the Union veterans who had fought the war were nearly all gone.More than 1,000 items were published on the Atlanta Campaign alone—articles, memoirs, and letters on every topic imaginable sent in by Union soldiers who had followed General Sherman into Georgia in 1864. The first appeared in June 1879 on the battle of Kennesaw Mountain. The National Tribune Remembers the Atlanta Campaign, edited by Stephen Davis, offers 70 selections pertaining to the Atlanta Campaign. Our hope is that these entries advance the cause of Civil War scholarship by bringing back into print an array of some of the most important writing about the conflict penned by the men who fought in it.

Back in print! A visual and narrative overview of the principal military engagements of the American Revolutionary War. Symonds narrates each battle in a clear, concise, and readable way. Accompanying two-color, full-page maps make everything easy to understand, and make this book an ideal classroom text, battlefield tour guide, or library reference.

The name Point Lookout conjures images of suffering and despair, a notorious Federal prison camp where thousands of Confederate captives endured unimaginable hardships. As the exchange cartel collapsed and relentless campaigns swelled Northern prisons beyond capacity, Point Lookout emerged in July 1863 as a grim solution. Officially dubbed “Camp Hoffman,” this sprawling 45-acre compound on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay opened in the shadow of Gettysburg and soon became the largest prison of the Civil War. By August 1865, more than 52,000 prisoners had crossed its gates, marking it as a cornerstone of the “second wave” of Union prison camps. In this meticulous and groundbreaking study Point Lookout, Maryland: The Largest Civil War Prison, author Robert Crickenberger reexamines Point Lookout with fresh eyes, peeling back layers of myth to reveal a more nuanced truth. While prison camps often fade into the background of Civil War narratives, overshadowed by the battles that filled them, Crickenberger brings Point Lookout into sharp focus. Challenging the traditional portrayal of guards as uniformly brutal and prisoners as mere victims, he draws on extensive, previously unpublished research to explore the complex experiences of both. Postwar accounts, steeped in survivor bias and “Lost Cause” rhetoric, have long dominated the story—until now. This thought-provoking work dismantles accepted assumptions, offering a balanced perspective that questions the validity of memoirs taken as gospel by earlier scholars. From the camp’s daily realities to its broader impact on the prisoner-of-war system, Crickenberger’s scholarship, based on extensive primary accounts, illuminates Point Lookout’s critical role in shaping not only the Civil War but also the future of American incarceration. A vital resource for historians and casual readers alike, this book uncovers an overlooked chapter of history with clarity, depth, and unflinching honesty.

Timothy R. Snyder’s Stonewall Jackson’s Winter Operations: The Raids Against the C&O Canal and the Bath-Romney Campaign, December 1861 to February 1862 offers a fresh perspective on early-war operations led by famed Confederate General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson. When viewed apart from the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, these earlier military activities reveal a starkly different portrait of the enigmatic general. Instead of lightning-quick maneuvers and overwhelming victories, Snyder depicts a fallible Jackson who encountered significant difficulties, made mistakes and miscalculations, and led a series of unsuccessful operations. As commander of the Valley District, Jackson orchestrated raids against two dams of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company, a vital coal carrier serving Washington, D.C. This book provides the first comprehensive account of these important but understudied events that helped shape the war along the Maryland-Virginia border. Although Jackson failed to breach either structure, his persistent efforts highlight the canal’s overlooked significance to the Union war effort. Snyder’s extensive primary source research—including official reports, letters, diaries, and newspapers—fundamentally reshapes perceptions of the fabled Confederate general to present a more accurate historical portrait of the man and his early military career.During the bitterly cold Bath-Romney Campaign, Jackson led a small army into the Allegheny foothills, and captured Bath, Virginia. On picket duty at the town, several men from General William W. Loring’s command froze to death while officers from the Stonewall Brigade lodged their men in a resort hotel. This disparity fueled deep resentment within Loring’s command and eventually a near-mutiny. Although Jackson later captured Romney, Virginia, without a fight, occupying the town was not the general’s original objective. When the Confederate secretary of war ordered Jackson to withdraw Loring’s command to Winchester, Jackson threatened to resign, citing interference from Richmond. Snyder’s extensive primary source research reveals that this order was, in fact, strategically sound given Confederate intelligence and Union troop concentrations.Stonewall Jackson’s Winter Operations fundamentally reshapes perceptions of the fabled Confederate general to present a more accurate historical portrait of the man and his military career.

The unassuming stone farmhouse occupied by John and Ann Rose and their seven children sat amid 230 acres of verdant land on the eastern side of the Emmitsburg Road about two miles south of Gettysburg. On July 2, 1863, this patch of ground—sandwiched between the Peach Orchard to the south and Cemetery Ridge to the north—became a vortex for tens of thousands of men as the armies renewed the second day of battle. Scott Fink’s A Little Piece of Hell at Gettysburg: The Attack and Defense of the Rose Farm, July 2-3, 1863 is the first full-length study to focus on its significance.Confederates under James Longstreet swept across the Rose Farm from different directions in a bid to crush and roll up Maj. Gen. George Meade’s left flank. The Rose property, which included the Stony Hill and the Rose Woods, witnessed some of the heaviest fighting of the war as thousands of Georgians and South Carolinians flooded onto the property from the east and southeast, driving westward into sheets of lead and iron. One of the fields, a 20-acre plot across which some 20,000 men of both armies would march, charge, fight and die—often in hand-to-hand combat—is better known today as The Wheatfield. Union men from several corps from different parts of the field would be rushed into the swirling chaos to stem the break in the line and hold fast. Heavy musketry fire and death-dealing artillery littered the ground and surrounding woodlots with wounded and dead soldiers. The stone walls of the house and barn were used by the Rebels for shelter and, after the fighting, the buildings served as a Confederate field hospital. Between 500 and 1,000 Confederates were buried on the Rose property. Alexander Gardner took some of the most famous photographs of the war there, mostly of dead Georgians from Tige Anderson’s Georgia brigade. There is a reason this place earned distinction as the bloodiest farm in American history. One of Rose’s daughters suffered from chronic nightmares and bouts of hysteria, which today is better known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. The doctor treating her surmised she was “driven mad” and prescribed the use of a straitjacket for her condition. John claimed her anxiety was the result of hundreds of Confederate graves littering the property.A Little Piece of Hell at Gettysburg is grounded in deep research and moving prose that carries readers through every stage of the fighting. The author, a combat veteran, carefully examines the battle from the perspective of both the generals who planned it and the men in the ranks who fought it. His use of scores of archival and firsthand accounts, together with original maps, explanatory footnotes, and a keen understanding of the terrain, sheds significant new light on the experiences of these front-line troops. The fighting on the Rose Farm played a critical role in the fortunes of both armies at Gettysburg, and this fresh and original study helps put their sacrifices in context.

A concise summary of this turning point in the American Revolution with facts, maps, historical significance, strategies, and more.By the summer of 1780, Great Britain held the advantage in the American Revolution. A strategic shift to the south had borne fruit. British forces controlled the major ports of Savannah and Charleston, and Maj. Gen. Charles Cornwallis had recently trounced American forces under Gen. Horatio Gates at Camden, South Carolina. But Gen. Nathanael Greene, Gen. George Washington''s newly appointed southern commander, was about to turn things around. Instead of massing his forces, he divided them, sending Brig. Gen. Daniel Morgan southwestward. When British forces caught up to Morgan at Cowpens in January 1781, he was more than ready. Morgan''s victory was a tactical masterpiece, echoing Hannibal''s ancient triumph over the Romans at Cannae. Cowpens set in motion a chain of events leading to Yorktown and, ultimately, American independence.Learn how Daniel Morgan effectively used the Continental militia while designing a tactical plan to exploit the overconfidence and aggressiveness of his British opponent, Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton. The Battle Digest summary includes all the key aspects of the campaign and battle, including maps, images, and lessons learned.

This massive new reference work is broken up into sections presenting a detailed analysis of each corresponding order of battle for every German field formation above division. Additional new ground is broken by describing the orders of battle of the myriad German and Axis satellite formations assigned to security commands throughout occupied Europe and the combat zones, as well as those attached to fortress commands and to the commanders of German occupation forces in Eastern and Western Europe. An accompanying narrative describes the career of each field formation and includes the background and experience of many of their most famous commanding officers. Unlike similar works, these orders of battle are dynamic, and so account for the continuously changing character of Germany’s ground forces at war. For the first time, readers can follow the career of every German division, corps, army, and army group as the German armed forces shifted units to and from theatres of war, from the period of triumphant successes to the years of grinding defensive warfare and eventual defeat.

“I do not think that there was ever an army so badly routed” announced Maj. Gen. Phil Sheridan in a message to Lt. Gen. U. S. Grant on the morning after the decisive victory at Fisher’s Hill, Virginia, on September 22, 1864. The battlefield triumph was the result of Sheridan’s elaborate plan to destroy Lt. Gen. Jubal Early’s Confederate Valley Army deployed on a supposedly impregnable position along an aptly named stream called Tumbling Run south of Strasburg in Virginia’s important Shenandoah Valley. The combat was Early’s last chance to prevent the wholesale destruction of the Valley during the autumn of 1864. So Badly Routed: The Battle of Fisher’s Hill in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, September 22-24, 1864, is the first book-length treatment of this event. After several unsuccessful attempts by the Union to take control of the Shenandoah (known as the “Breadbasket of the Confederacy”), Grant directed Sheridan and his Army of the Shenandoah to rid the region of enemy troops and strip it clean. Grant had had enough of Early’s persistent threats to the capital at Washington, D.C., whose presence in the Valley also helped feed Robert E. Lee’s struggling Army of Northern Virginia. The authors utilize extensive firsthand archival research to thoroughly explore the military operations during the days following the Third Battle of Winchester through Sheridan’s attack at Fisher’s Hill. Their descriptions of the fighting, aided by accurate and informative maps and descriptive views by the soldiers themselves, make for a complete treatment of the decisive battle and the related military actions in Warren and Page counties and the Mosby Affair in Front Royal. Students and genealogists will hail the extensive original muster roll data used to create the Order of Battle, which provides for the first time the actual unit commanders on the field that day.In addition to significant detailed information published for the first time, So Badly Routed includes pertinent illustrations, complete casualty listings, and a self-guided tour. This study is an important addition to the library of Civil War enthusiasts and genealogists.

According to historian Richard McMurry, the 1864 campaign “through the woods and across the hills, valleys, and streams of North Georgia was one of the biggest, longest, and most spellbinding of the American Civil War. It was also one of the most important.” Despite its decisive impact on the war, the Georgia campaigns have still not received the attention they deserve. In the 1990s, editors Savas and Woodbury put together two volumes of wide-ranging and especially thoughtful essays by leading historians and students of war with footnotes, original maps, photos, and index that quickly sold out. Long out of print, they are once more being made available with a new Foreword by award-winning author Steve Davis in The Campaign for Atlanta & Sherman’s March to the Sea. Volume 1 “A Reassessment of Confederate Command Options During the Winter of 1863-1864,” by Steven E. Woodworth; “‘The Heavens and Earth had Suddenly Come Together’: The Battle of Peachtree Creek,” by Albert Castel; “A Reappraisal of the Generalship of General John Bell Hood in the Battles for Atlanta,” by Stephen Davis; “Feeding Sherman’s Army: Union Logistics in the Campaign for Atlanta,” by James J. Cooke; “‘It is Surrender or Fight?’ The Battle for Allatoona,” by Phil Gottschalk; “‘The Flash of Their Guns was a Sure Guide’: The 19th Michigan Infantry in the Atlanta Campaign,” by Terry L. In 2003, Army Cavalry Officer, 2nd Lieutenant Ross Berkoff, led his Scout Platoon from the 10th Mountain Division on more than 10,000 miles of reconnaissance missions over a nine-month period across the dangerous southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand—the birthplace of the Taliban. After his transition to Military Intelligence, Captain Berkoff returned to Afghanistan in 2006, once again assigned to the 10th Mountain Division’s Light Cavalry. This time, the Taliban insurgency had escalated in sophistication, with deadly effectiveness. Beyond the Outpost: An Army Cavalry Officer’s War Diary on the Frontlines of Afghanistan, 2003 – 2007 is the first and only raw daily chronicle from the perspective of a junior officer covering this delicate and hostile early period of the U.S. Army’s 20-year campaign against the Taliban.During the two-year period following September 11th, 2001, Taliban and Al Qaeda strongholds in Afghanistan were largely deserted. Months of intense U.S. Special Forces raids and bombing campaigns were successful at dislodging and disorganizing large swaths of enemy combatants. When the first deployments of U.S. Army Brigade Combat Teams entered Afghanistan, however, enemy tactics and momentum began to shift and intensify.Lieutenant Berkoff’s deployment in 2003 was Operation Enduring Freedom’s first use of Light Cavalry forces on the modern battlefield. His second deployment in 2006 supported the pursuit by U.S. intelligence agencies of Osama Bin Laden in the mountainous border region near Pakistan. Berkoff’s diary—raw and unscripted—carries us along the bumpy ride as Army operations roil in its counter-insurgency mission designed to destroy pockets of extremists and separate them from the beleaguered Afghan people. A large portion of Jake Tapper’s national bestseller The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor is solely dedicated to this 2006-2007 deployment.Beyond the Outpost records the early years of America’s Afghanistan Conflict. Berkoff’s firsthand day-to-day account of the 10th Mountain Division’s campaigning and combat across the sand dunes of Kandahar and over the mountains of the rugged Hindu Kush offers unique clarity and detail of the common soldier’s perspective, the evolution of tactics of the Taliban insurgency, and how the U.S. Army Cavalry fought to defeat it.In the aftermath of the bungled 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan, many combat veterans are gripped with profound questions about the meaning and the legacy of their service. Berkoff’s stories of courage, sacrifice, adaptability, resilience, and leadership, enhanced with original maps, illustrations, and previously unpublished photographs, help carry the weight of the collective experiences of our Afghanistan veterans.

This "brilliant" account of Benedict Arnold''s military campaign to bring Canada into the Revolutionary War is "hard to put down"—includes maps (Mag Web). In 1775, Benedict Arnold led more than one thousand men through the Maine wilderness in order to reach Quebec, the capital of British-held Canada. His goal was to reach the fortress city and bring Canada into the Revolutionary War as the fourteenth colony. When George Washington learned of a route to Quebec that followed a chain of rivers and lakes through the Maine wilderness, he picked Col. Benedict Arnold to command the surprise assault. The route to Canada was 270 miles of rapids, waterfalls, and dense forests that took months to traverse. Arnold led his famished corps through early winter snow and waist-high freezing water, up and over the Appalachian Mountains, and finally, to Quebec. In Benedict Arnold''s Army, award-winning author Arthur S. Lefkowitz traces the troops'' grueling journey, examining Arnold''s character at the time and how this campaign influenced him later in the Revolutionary War. After multiple trips to the route Arnold''s army took, Lefkowitz also includes detailed information and maps for readers to follow the expedition''s route from the coast of Main to Quebec City.

A modern, scholarly account of the most decisive campaign during the American Revolution examining the artillery, tactics and leadership involved. The siege of Yorktown in the fall of 1781 was the single most decisive engagement of the American Revolution. The campaign has all the drama any historian or student could want: the war''s top generals and admirals pitted against one another; decisive naval engagements; cavalry fighting; siege warfare; night bayonet attacks; and much more. Until now, however, no modern scholarly treatment of the entire campaign has been produced.By the summer of 1781, America had been at war with England for six years. No one believed in 1775 that the colonists would put up such a long and credible struggle. France sided with the colonies as early as 1778, but it was the dispatch of 5,500 infantry under Comte de Rochambeau in the summer of 1780 that shifted the tide of war against the British. In early 1781, after his victories in the Southern Colonies, Lord Cornwallis marched his army north into Virginia. Cornwallis believed the Americans could be decisively defeated in Virginia and the war brought to an end. George Washington believed Cornwallis''s move was a strategic blunder, and he moved vigorously to exploit it. Feinting against General Clinton and the British stronghold of New York, Washington marched his army quickly south. With the assistance of Rochambeau''s infantry and a key French naval victory at the Battle off the Capes in September, Washington trapped Cornwallis on the tip of a narrow Virginia peninsula at a place called Yorktown. And so it began.Operating on the belief that Clinton was about to arrive with reinforcements, Cornwallis confidently remained within Yorktown''s inadequate defenses. Determined that nothing short of outright surrender would suffice, his opponent labored day and night to achieve that end. Washington''s brilliance was on display as he skillfully constricted Cornwallis''s position by digging entrenchments, erecting redoubts and artillery batteries, and launching well-timed attacks to capture key enemy positions. The nearly flawless Allied campaign sealed Cornwallis''s fate. Trapped inside crumbling defenses, he surrendered on October 19, 1781, effectively ending the war in North America.Penned by historian Jerome A. Greene, The Guns of Independence: The Siege of Yorktown, 1781 offers a complete and balanced examination of the siege and the participants involved. Greene''s study is based upon extensive archival research and firsthand archaeological investigation of the battlefield. This fresh and invigorating study will satisfy everyone interested in American Revolutionary history, artillery, siege tactics, and brilliant leadership.

The history of an artillery unit and its role in the Civil War, at Vicksburg and beyond, with photos, maps, and illustrations. The celebrated Chicago Mercantile Battery was organized by the Mercantile Association, a group of prominent Chicago merchants, and mustered into service in August of 1862. The Chicagoans would serve in many of the Western theater''s most prominent engagements until the war ended in the spring of 1865. The battery accompanied Gen. William T. Sherman during his operations against Vicksburg as part of the XIII Corps under Gen. Andrew Jackson Smith. The artillerists performed well throughout the campaign at such places as Chickasaw Bluff, Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Big Black River, and the siege operations of Vicksburg. Ancillary operations included the reduction of Arkansas Post, Fort Hindman, Milliken''s Bend, Jackson, and many others. After reporting to Gen. Nathaniel Banks, commander of the Department of the Gulf, the Chicago battery transferred to New Orleans and ended up taking part in Banks''s disastrous Red River Campaign in Louisiana. The battery was almost wiped out at Sabine Crossroads, where it was overrun after hand-to-hand fighting. Almost two dozen battery men ended up in Southern prisons. Additional operations included expeditions against railroads and other military targets. Chicago''s Battery Boys is based upon many years of primary research and extensive travel by the author through Illinois, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Richard Williams skillfully weaves contemporary accounts by the artillerists themselves into a rich and powerful narrative that is sure to please the most discriminating Civil War reader. "Measures up to the standard of excellence set for this genre by the late John P. Pullen back in 1957 when he authored The Twentieth Maine: A Volunteer Regiment in the Civil War." —Edwin C. Bearss, from the Foreword

The story of the German submarine U-505 and its dramatic capture by the US Navy during WWII—told by one of its crewmen.Hans Goebeler is known as the man who "pulled the plug" on U-505 in 1944 to keep his beloved U-boat out of Allied hands. Steel Boat, Iron Hearts is his no-holds-barred account of service aboard a combat U-boat. It is the only full-length memoir of its kind, and Goebeler was aboard for every one of U-505''s war patrols.Using his own experiences, log books, and correspondence with other U-boat crewmen, Goebeler offers rich and very personal details about what life was like in the German Navy under Hitler. Because his first and last posting was to U-505, Goebeler''s perspective of the crew, commanders, and war patrols paints a vivid and complete portrait unlike any other to come out of the Kriegsmarine. He witnessed it all: from deadly sabotage efforts that almost sunk the boat to the tragic suicide of the only U-boat commander who took his life during WWII; from the terror and exhilaration of hunting the enemy to the seedy brothels of France. The vivid, honest, and smooth-flowing prose calls it like it was and pulls no punches.U-505 was captured by Captain Dan Gallery''s Guadalcanal Task Group 22.3 on June 4, 1944. Trapped by this "Hunter-Killer" group, U-505 was depth-charged to the surface, strafed by machine gun fire, and boarded. It was the first enemy ship captured at sea since the War of 1812. Today, hundreds of thousands of visitors tour U-505 each year at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.Includes photos and a special Introduction by Keith Gill, Curator of U-505, Museum of Science and Industry

The story of an ancient ambush that devastated Rome—and the modern-day hunt that finally revealed its location and its archaeological treasures. In 9 A.D., the seventeenth, eighteenth, & nineteenth Roman legions and their auxiliary troops under the command of Publius Quinctilius Varus vanished in the boggy wilds of Germania. They died singly and by the hundreds over several days in a carefully planned ambush led by Arminius—a Roman-trained German warrior adopted and subsequently knighted by the Romans, but determined to stop Rome''s advance east beyond the Rhine River. By the time it was over, some 25,000 men, women, and children were dead and the course of European history had been forever altered. "Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions!" Emperor Augustus agonized aloud when he learned of the devastating loss. As decades passed, the location of the Varus defeat, one of the Western world''s most important battlefields, was lost to history. It remained so for two millennia. Fueled by an unshakable curiosity and burning interest in the story, a British Major named J. A. S. (Tony) Clunn delved into the nooks and crannies of times past. By sheer persistence and good luck, he turned the foundation of German national history on its ear. Convinced the running battle took place north of Osnabruck, Germany, Clunn set out to prove his point. His discovery of large numbers of Roman coins in the late 1980s, followed by a flood of thousands of other artifacts (including weapons and human remains), ended the mystery once and for all. Archaeologists and historians across the world agreed. Today, a state-of-the-art museum houses and interprets these priceless historical treasures on the very site Varus''s legions were lost. The Quest for the Lost Roman Legions is a masterful retelling of Clunn''s search to discover the Varus battlefield. His well-paced and vivid writing style makes for a compelling read as he alternates between his incredible modern quest and the ancient tale of the Roman occupation of Germany—based upon actual finds from the battlefield—that ultimately ended so tragically in the peat bogs of Kalkriese.</

FINALIST FOR BIOGRAPHY, 2008, ARMY HISTORICAL FOUNDATION DISTINGUISHED BOOK AWARD WINNER, 2009, THE DOUGLAS SOUTHALL FREEMAN AWARD FOR BEST BOOK ON SOUTHERN HISTORY Jedediah Hotchkiss, Stonewall Jackson''s renowned mapmaker, expressed the feelings of many contemporaries when he declared that Robert Rodes was the best division commander in the Army of Northern Virginia. This well-deserved accolade is all the more remarkable considering that Rodes, a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and a prewar railroad engineer, was one of a very few officers in Lee''s army to rise so high without the benefit of a West Point education. Major General Robert E. Rodes of the Army of Northern Virginia: A Biography, is the first deeply researched scholarly biography on this remarkable Confederate officer. From First Manassas in 1861 to Third Winchester in 1864, Rodes served in all the great battles and campaigns of the legendary Army of Northern Virginia. He quickly earned a reputation as a courageous and inspiring leader who delivered hard-hitting attacks and rock steady defensive efforts. His greatest moment came at Chancellorsville in the spring of 1863, when he spearheaded Stonewall Jackson''s famous flank attack that crushed the left wing of General Hooker''s Army of the Potomac. Rodes began the conflict with a deep yearning for recognition and glory, coupled with an indifferent attitude toward religion and salvation. When he was killed at the height of his glorious career at Third Winchester on September 19, 1864, a trove of prayer books and testaments were found on his corpse. Based upon exhaustive new research, Darrell Collins''s new biography breathes life into a heretofore largely overlooked Southern soldier. Although Rodes'' widow consigned his personal papers to the flames after the war, Collins has uncovered a substantial amount of firsthand information to complete this compelling portrait of one of Robert E. Lee''s most dependable field generals. Darrell L. Collins is the author of several books on the Civil War, including General William Averell''s Salem Raid: Breaking the Knoxville Supply Line (1999) and Jackson''s Valley Campaign: The Battles of Cross Keys and Port Republic (The Virginia Civil War Battles and Leaders Series, 1993). A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Darrell and his wife Judith recently relocated to Conifer, Colorado.

"A well-organized and concise introduction to the war''s major battles" (The Journal of America''s Military Past). Winner of the Gold Star Book Award for History from the Military Writers Society of America This is the first comprehensive account of every engagement of the Revolution, a war that began with a brief skirmish at Lexington Green on April 19, 1775, and concluded on the battlefield at the Siege of Yorktown in October 1781. In between were six long years of bitter fighting on land and at sea. The wide variety of combats blanketed the North American continent from Canada to the Southern colonies, from the winding coastal lowlands to the Appalachian Mountains, and from the North Atlantic to the Caribbean. Every entry begins with introductory details including the date of the battle, its location, commanders, opposing forces, terrain, weather, and time of day. The detailed body of each entry offers both a Colonial and a British perspective of the unfolding military situation, a detailed and unbiased account of what actually transpired, a discussion of numbers and losses, an assessment of the consequences of the battle, and suggestions for further reading. Many of the entries are supported and enriched by original maps and photos.

Artillery played an important and perhaps decisive role at the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. Although many hundreds of books have been published on the battle, few have focused on the artillery. Silent Sentinels fills this flaring gap in the literature. This well-written and illustrated study was designed for both the casual battlefield visitor and the serious scholar. The former will use Silent Sentinels to tour the battlefield, browse existing guns, ponder the many photographs, and learn more about artillery in general; the latter will find the extensive primary sources, diagrams, appendices of numbers and losses, and informative discussion of organization and tactics an indispensable reference resource. Silent Sentinels discusses in detail every gun-type used at Gettysburg, the equipment needed to operate the guns, their organization, and the tactics employed by both Union and Confederate artillery men. In addition to a history of the artillery and how it was used, the author includes chapters on the park’s collection of 436 guns, the pieces on display at the field today, how to identify the different types of cannon, and how to identify the date and place of manufacture. Silent Sentinels concludes with a driving tour of the battlefield, specially designed with the artillery in mind. This lovely historical guide, complete with detailed endnotes and bibliography, will be a welcomed addition to the growing Gettysburg titles.

A detailed tactical narrative of one of the most important but least known engagements of William T. Sherman''s Carolinas Campaign during the Civil War.As General Sherman''s infantry crossed into North Carolina, Maj. Gen. Judson Kilpatrick''s veteran Federal cavalry division fanned out in front, screening the advance. When Kilpatrick learned that Confederate cavalry under Lt. Gen. Wade Hampton was hot on his trail, he decided to set a trap for the Southern horsemen near a place called Monroe''s Crossroads. Hampton, however, learned of the plan and decided to do something Kilpatrick was not expecting: attack. On March 10, 1865, Southern troopers under Hampton and Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler launched a savage surprise attack on Kilpatrick''s sleeping camp. After three hours of some of the toughest cavalry fighting of the entire Civil War, Hampton broke off and withdrew. His attack, however, stopped Kilpatrick''s advance and bought another precious day for Lt. Gen. William J. Hardee to evacuate his command from Fayetteville. This, in turn, permitted Hardee to join the command of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and set the stage for the climactic Battle of Bentonville nine days later.Noted Civil War author Eric J. Wittenberg has written the first history of this important but long-forgotten battle, and places it in its proper context within the entire Carolinas Campaign. His study features twenty-eight original maps and dozens of illustrations. Finally, an author of wide experience and renown has brought to vivid life this overlooked portion of the Carolinas Campaign.Praise for The Battle of Monroe''s Crossroads"All the elements that we expect in great battle are here: high drama, command decisions good, bad, and ugly; courage and cowardice, sacrifice, and fortitude. Readers both new to the genre and veteran to the literature will find much of value in The Battle of Monroe''s Crossroads." —Noah Andre Trudeau, author of The Last Citadel: Petersburg, June 1864–April 1865"Features a marvelous cast of characters and a riveting story impeccably researched and judiciously interpreted. It is the definitive account of this fascinating battle." —Mark L. Bradley, author of Last Stand in the Carolinas: The Battle of Bentonville

Michael J. Martin’s A History of the 4th Wisconsin Infantry and Cavalry in the Civil War is a deeply researched and vividly written study of an unheralded Federal combat regiment. Few of the thousands of regiments raised to fight the American Civil War experienced the remarkably diverse history of this little-known organization. The Wisconsin "Badgers" began the war as foot soldiers in the summer of 1861 as the 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. After service in Maryland guarding railroads, the men sailed to the Gulf of Mexico to join Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler’s expedition to capture the South’s most important city: New Orleans. From August 1862 to July 1863, the 4th Wisconsin participated as infantry or mounted infantry in a series of bloody battles in Louisiana, including Baton Rouge, Bisland, the siege of Port Hudson, and Clinton. With a desperate need for mounted troops, the Badgers were officially changed to cavalry in September 1863 and became the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry. As troopers, they took part in four mounted expeditions across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, serving under such notable generals as Albert Lee, John Davidson, and Benjamin Grierson. The Confederate armies surrendered in the spring of 1865, but the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry joined Maj. Gen. Wesley Merritt’s cavalry division that July on its ride from Louisiana into Texas, where the regiment was broken up and deployed in various outposts along the Rio Grande River. On May 28, 1866, Wisconsin’s last regiment of Civil War volunteers was finally mustered out at Brownsville, Texas. Unfortunately, many of the men would not be going home: 431 had lost their lives to enemy bullets and disease. Eight years in the making, Martin’s regimental history is based upon scores of previously unused soldier and civilian diaries, letters, reports, contemporary newspapers, and reminiscences. It includes dozens of previously unpublished soldier photos, and a complete roster. Martin’s study is a must-have addition for every serious Civil War reader.About the Author: A descendant of a Civil War soldier who was wounded at the Wheatfield at Gettysburg, Michael James Martin grew up in Mequon, Wisconsin, and received both an MS and a Ph.D. in Animal science from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is the author of several published articles on the Civil War. This is his first book.
