Emmeline Pankhurst's autobiography gives the reader an insight into the struggle to get votes for women. The biography does not hold back on details of the appalling treatment that suffragettes endured from the authorities. The book contains the 16 photographs from the original 1914 publication with three others. The text is annotated by the publisher with short footnotes giving explanations of terms and descriptions of the people mentioned. There is an introduction by Lesley Gray giving an overview of the suffragette struggle.

"The Wreck of the 'Grosvenor' " tells of the adventures of Edward Royle, the second mate on a sailing ship travelling from England to South America in the nineteenth century. With a hard-hearted captain and a mutinous crew, this was never going to be an easy voyage. When Royle spots a vessel foundering at sea, the trouble really starts and he is forced to chose between duty and conscience. "The Wreck of the 'Grosvenor' " is perhaps William Clark Russell's most famous book. John Sutherland, Emeritus Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London described this as "the most popular mid-Victorian melodrama of adventure and heroism at sea". This new edition from Solis Press of the 1877 bestseller has been completely revised and includes illustrations from the first US publication. The book also features a section about the author and his life, written specially for this edition.

The Derby, June 1913. A suffragette dies for her cause; but what of the man who feels responsible for killing her? "The King's Jockey" was inspired by the life of royal jockey Herbert 'Bertie' Jones, his tragic collision with Emily Wilding Davison 100 years ago, and the dramatic events that followed. Until now Bertie Jones has been just a footnote in a history book, but his story is uplifting and life affirming despite the terrible outcome of the 'Suffragette Derby'. Author Lesley Gray, like many people, had heard of the sacrifice made by the suffragette who ran out in front of the King's horse, but knew next to nothing about the jockey. Who was he and how did this terrible event affect him? "There was little written about Bertie Jones, so I had to research most of my material. The more I found out, the more it made me wonder about where he had come from, how he had achieved his fame and how he coped after the suffragette incident. My story is fictional, but I have tried to create what might have been a similar world. I wanted to examine what may have driven Emily Wilding Davison to her dreadful fate and to lift Bertie up from a mere footnote in history."The central character in "The King's Jockey" is Bertie himself. While the narrative is mainly from his point of view, the novel draws on a series of vividly drawn and compelling characters to create Bertie's world, a world of strong traditional values that will be forced to change through the wider and sometimes darker external forces at work. "The King's Jockey" explores the evolving roles of the individual, the family and society, considering the issues of responsibility, loyalty, sacrifice and belief. Timed for the 100th anniversary of the 'Suffragette Derby' on Sunday 1 June 2013. Press and public interest in the 100th anniversary of Emily Wilding Davison's death on 8 June 2013. Widespread public and media interest in the 'Golden Age', the year preceding the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

"The first in time I shall call Preparation , the stage during which the problem was 'investigated ...in all directions'; the second is the stage during which he was not consciously thinking about the problem, which I shall call Incubation; the third, consisting of the appearance of the 'happy idea' together with the psychological events which immediately preceded and accompanied that appearance, I shall call Illumination . And I shall add a fourth stage, of Verification ..." Solis Press are pleased to be able to republish Wallas' seminal book on creativity that had sadly been out of print for many years. This edition is based on the first edition of 1926 and has been completely reset in fresh type.

In "Sentiment", Vincent O'Sullivan looks inside the lives of a group of middle-class English people just before the start of the first world war. The story centres around the love affairs of four young people and how they interact. O'Sullivan picks apart his characters' cares and concerns and shows how these are trivial when we know what was about to happen to them and their world.

"Our century has become marked by the distinct, bitter tinge of nomadism and emigration." The sixteen essays in this book are by writers from diverse parts of the world recalling their experiences and emotions of what is meant by the concept of Home. Each essay is written with evocative and often lyrical tones of great beauty as well as lucidity. Many of the essays describe homes that exist no longer, and homes that have changed or disappeared through time. Yet the power of place is real: each author understands that Home belongs to the landscape of the imagination, with a power to recover and to transform. It is perhaps no coincidence that all of the contributors make their home in the USA, a nation that has defined itself by its emigrant imagination and a nation that has allowed its immigrants to be Americans while also holding on to who they were in the past. Through their experiences, the authors are both outsiders and insiders. They carry their dreams of homeland wherever they settle, for Home is never lost but real in its evocation and the power to remember.

It is 1889 and George Jacob Schweinfurth sets himself up as a new Messiah-Jesus reborn. He is adept at persuading people, especially young women, to join him in "heaven." Schweinfurth's "angels," soon find themselves pregnant, giving birth to children supposedly conceived "without sin."Six Years in Heaven" is a cautionary tale of the effects of religious fundamentalism and the power of cults. The book is interwoven with a romance, telling the story of Clara and the attempts of her beau, Arthur, to save her from Schweinfurth. However, the true purpose of the novel is most likely to have been to expose the real-life scandalous goings-on within the Church Triumphant.

James Edward Austen Leigh's short biography of "dear aunt Jane" may not be a critical insight into the famous novelist's life or her work but is nevertheless written by a relative who knew her and draws on sources only available to Jane's wider family. The book also includes a cancelled chapter of 'Persuasion' and a fragment of Jane's last work. Annotated by George Cavendish.

All caregivers are called upon to recognize both the pain and beauty in this world and to help move society towards an “Ideal City”. Beauty is the aesthetic by which healers can care for their patients.

This book was first published in 1925 and was intended to be a dictionary of first world war slang. In the 1920s, “the war to end all wars” was still fresh in everyone’s minds and the authors were commissioned to capture the combatants’ sayings and expressions.Interestingly, although written nearly fifteen years before the next global conflict, the term “first world war” appears. Colonel Repington named his published history of the war as such. He did not want to flatter “the Boche” by calling it the “German War” so instead chose what became the prescient or perhaps pessimistic “first world war”.This book was primarily designed as a Dictionary of War Slang at the instance of the authorities of the Imperial War Museum, using materials contributed by officers and men of all branches of the Service who had served with the British and Dominion forces. A large proportion of the slang of the war, however, comprised old pre-War Army and Navy expressions, which, in the War, were either adopted as they stood, so to speak, or else were altered and adapted to suit existing circumstances, and the enlargement of the original plan became unavoidable. The scope of the work has also been further extended to include a considerable number of Service terms, familiar among people in general, as being of interest in themselves or through their origins.A number of American service words and expressions, particularly some that became familiar among British troops during the war, have been included.

In this evocative and emotional work, the poet, novelist, and human rights activist Marjorie Agosin pays homage to her great-grandmother, Helena Broder. As a young woman, Helena escaped Vienna to seek refuge in Chile, leaving shortly after the Night of Broken Glass in 1938 when the Nazi regime unleashed a campaign of violence, terror and destruction against the Jewish population. This book takes readers on Marjorie's journey through time and space, and across thresholds between life, death and dreams, to discover Helena's lost voice. This is not a linear journey, but one that braids together the past, the present, and the future, allowing Marjorie to give Helena, an exiled woman, a third home in the liminal space of memory and literature; a safe haven where she can be complete rather than fragmented, a place where her "exhausted suitcase" can finally rest. This touching collection of poems, in Marjorie Agosin's native Spanish together with Alison Ridley's delicate English translation, is accompanied by images from the Chilean photographer Samuel Shats, as well as poignant memorabilia of Helena herself.
