When strangers invade her village in 1910, young princess Samarah''s knowledge of English unwittingly contributes to her capture. Forced into a life of servitude on a plantation far removed from her homeland, Samarah struggles with losing the life and people she had known and loved. Her mother and Bintum - her childhood love who seeks and reunites with her at the plantation- offer a sense of the familiar until tragedy strikes leaving Samarah alone and angry. As the son of Samarahís employer, Mayne Patterson represents all that has caused pain, misery and uncertainty in Samarahís life. Mayne is in love with Samarah and will do everything he can to get her. Can Samarah overcome all the hurt and misgivings to see Mayne for who he is and not what he embodies? Torn between the love to whom she is betrothed and her growing attraction to Mayne, Samarah must decide between her heartís desires and her obligations to her homeland. This debut historical fiction is at once a story of love and identity as it is a portrait of aspects of colonial rule in Africa.

Okafor Meets his Match is a collection of three short stories and two novellas from Cameroon. Through a range of diverse characters, the stories masterfully depict varied themes in African social life with regards to identity, marriage, drugs and inheritance. In ''Okafor Meets his Match'' Ngong believes that the pride of his people and nation is at stake and he must defend it. In "Zow and the Village Belle" the rituals and customs of inheritance and marriage are brought out in the tragedy of Anang, the heir apparent, who cannot marry his pearl. "The Brief Stop" brings to the fore the gruesome consequences of juvenile drug abuse and in "The Warder''s Assignment" a printer accepts a job from a warder who had been assigned it by a prisoner on death row. Together the stories in this collection make for an enjoyable read that deftly captures the richness and complexity of human relationships in social life.

This book argues that since the emergence of the Cameroon National Union (CNU) and the one-party state in 1966, Cameroonians have progressively degenerated into the syndrome of collective amnesia inspired by a culture of sycophancy, glorifying and deifying political leadership. These developments stand in stark contrast to what obtained in the nascent Southern Cameroons the UN Trust territory administered by Britain until 1961 when its population voted overwhelmingly by 70.5% to gain their independence by establishing a federation with the then French-speaking Republic of Cameroon. From the late 1950s until the dismantling of the Cameroon Federation, Southern Cameroons and later West Cameroon had a vibrant parliament, a House of Chiefs (or Senate), an independent Judiciary, an ideal, corruption-free Public Service, a state government with ministers presided over by an Executive Prime Minister and, for a decade, West Cameroon provided the Vice Presidency for the Federal Republic of Cameroon. In what may be accurately described as Prof Anthony Ndis seminal work, he contends and rightly so that solutions to the legion of problems that plague contemporary Cameroon may be easily found in the pages of The Golden Age of Southern Cameroons. Agents for this transformation do not have to be invented or imported from Mars; all we need is a patriotic spirit, political will, readiness to dialogue, transparency and commitment to democracy.

The papers in this volume focus on fiction and theatre in their traditional forms as well as in their encounters with novel and innovative forms and avenues of dissemination. As a cultural practice that emerged from a process of protest and contestation of hegemony, it is understandable that one main concern in African literature and literary criticism is the resistance against the emergence of marginalizing centers in formerly or currently marginalized societies with regard to discourses, aesthetics and media of creation. These new centers that sometimes undermine the strategic/tactical exploitation of the relative advantage procured by each medium run the risk of leading to new forms of stratification that mitigate the import of African and African diasporic literatures. The collection of essays therefore seeks to analyze the representation of pertinent socio-political and historical questions in a variety of postcolonial texts from Africa and the African diasporas, notably the Caribbean islands and the United States of America. However, far from re-writing of history in a way that cedes to conservative worldviews, creative writers and critics simultaneously attempt to chart ways forward for socially all-inclusive futures. In the context of colonial and neo-colonial legacies that seem to forestall any sense of individual and collective self-fulfillment, contributors to this volume examine the pertinence of African fiction and theatre in imagining new vistas of re-conceptualizing the postcolonial condition in ways that re-galvanize the belief in an enabling future.

What precisely is the state of the African continent today? Depending on one’s perspective, the answer may either dwell on Africa’s recent economic and political accomplishments or focus on the long-standing single-story of failure, disaster and eternal dictatorships. This book provides a nuanced, forceful and balanced assessment of Africa’s political and economic performance since independence. While acknowledging Africa’s tragic pitfalls, dating to the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism, State of the Continent skillfully argues that theories associated with the dependency school are no longer enough to explain the continent’s failures in governance and economic performance. For a continent so richly blessed and endowed with both human and material resources, the blame for Africa’s lackluster performance falls squarely on its leadership. To get things right, Nkrumah’s vision of the primacy of the “political kingdom” must be prioritized whereupon economic gains shall predictably, follow. In lucid and persuasive prose, this volume is an ideal book for scholars as well as students of international studies and African politics.

This book illuminates the complex and constantly shifting social and cultural dynamics that shape people''s identity. Specifically, the volume focuses on the intersections of gender with, culture and identity, and at different historical epochs; on the way men and women define themselves and are defined by diverse peoples and cultures across time and space in sub-Saharan Africa. The discussions presented in this anthology primarily focus on ''being'' as ''a state'' or ''condition'', defined by sex identity, and how this identity shifts, and hence ''becoming'', assuming diverse meanings in disparate societies, contexts, and time. The discourse, therefore, moves from how the perception of the self in cultural and historical contexts has informed actions and at some other times shaped interpretations given to historical facts, to how changing economic realities also shape the definitions and constructions of social and relational issues in Sub-Saharan Africa. The historical trajectories of Islamic religion, colonialism and Christian missionary activities in sub-Saharan Africa have shaped the worlds of the peoples of the region and impacted on gender relations.

The year 1999 was a watershed in the history of Nigeria as it witnessed the peaceful transfer of power from the military to the political class. Given Nigeria''s tumultuous history of successive military interventions, this development was the first ''genuine'' transition that saw the military elite transferring political power to civilians without itching to stage a comeback. This edited volume, composed of 22 chapters discusses the form, trajectory and substance of democratic governance in post-military Nigeria between 1999 and 2014. It is a compilation of well researched essays and narratives on Nigerian government and politics. The book is a multi-disciplinary assessment of Nigeria''s democratic strides, including contributions from scholars in a broad range of disciplines such as history, sociology and anthropology, political science, economics, international relations, among others. The book examines the factors responsible for the resilience of the current democratic governance structures, in spite of centripetal and centrifugal forces frustrating democratic consolidation in the country. It equally interrogates these factors and makes appropriate recommendations for overcoming them. Key themes covered in the book in the Boko Haram insurgency, governance and corruption, militancy, sharia law, Islamic banking amongst others. It sheds light on contending issues affecting, afflicting and retarding the country''s progress. Issues like ethnicity, electoral corruption, human rights abuses, privatization of national assets, kidnapping and armed robbery, overbearing leadership personality and many more are critically discussed. Local government autonomy and the challenges of grassroots development and civil service administration are also thoroughly analysed. Democratic Governance and Political Participation in Nigeria 1999-2014 is a detailed, exhaustive, deep, stimulating and captivating narrative of the Nigerian situation. It is enthusiastically recommended for those who wish to know more about contemporary Nigerian history. As a collection of contemporary issues on the Nigerian government and politics, the book is recommended for courses in politics and governance in Nigeria in particular and Africa in general. It is an invaluable companion for both graduate and undergraduate students as well as scholars of African politics.

Inspired by Alistair Cooke’s masterpiece “Letter from America” (1934-2004) that depicted the transformation of British culture in the United States of America, Ndi-Shang’s text redefines ‘America’, focusing on the melting pot engendered by African, indigenous, European and Asian cultures in Latin America through the case of Peru, the erstwhile epicentre of Spanish empire in Latin America. It is a reflection on the triangular relationship between Africa, Europe and America against the backdrop of slavery and (neo-)colonialism which continue to define intimate experiences, daily interactions, personal trajectories and human relations in a ‘globalized world’. Ndi-Shang probes into the legacies of racial inequalities but also the possibilities of a new ethic of encounter amongst human beings/cultures. The text is based on an intricate interweaving of the humorous with the tragic, the personal with the global, the historical with the current and the real with the creative.

Just A Bend delivers an overall powerful message of assurance that, although life is full of bends, these should be taken only as moments for deep reflections given that no journey is ever predictably straight or short. It is a collection of deep, scintillating, captivating, motivating and inspiring poems that span various subject areas; culture, the environment, politics, economics – to highlight the human intrigues of marginalization, exploitation, jealousy, and hate that give rise to the multifarious human predicaments and woes. Despite this dark side, Just A Bend also portrays the bright side of life by celebrating care, love, and peace, and even individuals that deserve to be recognised in space and time. It offers a unique experimentation with type, style and form, that aims to encourage and inspire people who might not have thought of reading a poem, let alone, writing one, to pick up the golden sceptre in the bold journey of poetic expression.

This volume examines the relationships between the German colonial administration, the Basel Mission, the British Baptist Missionary Society and other missionary societies that characterized the setting up of Basel Mission education in Cameroon against the backdrop of intense rivalry.
