Research in Interactive Design presents an in-depth study of new product design methods. Interactive design is an original structured design approach that has recently emerged from transversal research. On the research side, the topic of interactive design is the fruitful result of sophisticated joint studies combining specific numerical engineering theories, original development in design science and industrial engineering, new discoveries in mechatronics and advanced mechanical engineering methods. Additionally, industry benefits from interactive design instruments. Interactive design is a constructive approach that tends to ensure innovation by improving user-integration in the design process, fostering the development of virtual prototypes and providing new powerful ways for collaborative design activities. Interactive design instruments are seen as the extension of traditional CAD tools.

This book provides an accurate overview of the recent research or industrial application in interactive design. The different arguments, taken from the international conference Virtual Concept 2005, will provide the reader with some advanced solutions concerning new methods and tools by discussing:

- modelling techniques: new techniques ensuring the development of high qualified, updated and reduced models being able to represent the behaviour of a process or a product in its environment;

- design solution space exploration: specific instruments dedicated to the identification of suitable design solutions and their virtual representation allowing engineers to have interaction with the virtual worlds;

- interactive process organization: studies highlighting the basic evolutions of a process integrating new instruments of interactive design.

Each subsequent part of the book addresses both advanced techniques and industrial applications of the latest successful research in interactive design. The different chapters strongly highlight novel solutions for supporting decision-making in a huge field of engineering: product design, manufacturing and assembly, training and risk prevention, Robotics, design for customers, mechanical engineering, etc.

As Ambient Intelligence (AmI) ecosystems are rapidly becoming a reality, they raise new research challenges. Unlike predefined static architectures as we know them today, AmI ecosystems are bound to contain a large number of heterogeneous computing, communication infrastructures and devices that will be dynamically assembled. Architectures will be sensitive, adaptive, context-aware and responsive to users‚ needs and habits.Researchers need to both enable their user-friendly application in a growing number of areas while ensuring that these applications remain reliable and secure. Held in Sophia Antipolis (France) from September the 20th to September the 22nd 2006, the first edition of the AmI.d conference tackled the latest research challenges within AmI ecosystems, presented AmI applications as well as security solutions. The AmI.d conference featured an international programme committee, co-chaired by Professor Antonio Maña (University of Màlaga) and Dr. Volkmar Lotz (SAP). Professor Javier Lopez (University of Màlaga) served as General Chair and Mr Richard Bricaire (Strategies Telecoms and Multimedia) was the Organization Chair. This volume gathers all the papers selected by the Program Committee. Authors coming from renowned universities and industry research centres contributed to draw a comprehensive state-of-the-art in AmI applications and security research. To improve quality of life for cancer patients has been the endeavour of the author for the past 25 years in rehabilitation and palliation. To maintain quality of life is an important challenge not only for health aftercare service, but also in palliative and terminal situations. The invasiveness of some of the current therapies and the restricted life expectancy of many patients led to the change in therapeutic paradigms. Rehabilitation and palliation have become an essential part of modern comprehensive cancer care. There are many excellent text books in cancer management which provide therapeutic recommendations thereby influencing the disease. Quality of life is now the second parameter after survival used to evaluate the effectiveness of first line oncologial therapies and is still the first parameter of most therapies in the case of recurrence. It contains experiences of the author and specific instructions how to assess, treat and evaluate rehabilitative and palliative measures.

At the time of the introduction of the Ambient Intelligence (AmI) concept many scenarios where considered to be visionary or even science fiction. Enabled by current technology, many aspects of these scenarios are slowly but inexorably becoming true. However, we are still facing important challenges that need further investments in research and industrialization. Current software engineering techniques and tools are not prepared to deal with the development of applications for what we could call AmI ecosystems, lacking a fixed architecture, controlled limits and even owners. The comfortable boundaries of static architectures and well-defined limits and owners are not existent in these AmI ecosystems.In its second year AmI.d again shows the heterogeneity of research challenges related to Ambient Intelligence. Many disciplines are involved and have to co-ordinate their efforts in resolving the strongly related research issues.

In recent years, mini-invasive surgery has become increasingly important for reducing the risk of infection and minimizing blood loss and volume of implants.

Hip surgery requires small incisions, which make the use of the appropriate equipment and an extensive knowledge of the anatomy of the region essential.

Mini-invasive surgery requires the surgeon to consider the indications for surgery for each patient he treats and to know the exact loco-regional anatomy for that patient. Methods must be very precise and warrant visual explanations to help teach young surgeons.

In this book, the different surgical approaches to the hip are presented in terms of their anatomical specifications and indications. Films of these operations, performed by international specialist authors, and some of these images are used to explain the surgical techniques described in the book.

This is the first comprehensive book about surgery on and around the vertebral artery all along its cervical and intracranial course. This vessel has been considered for long as out of surgical reach leaving many different pathologies not or incompletely treated. Why a book dedicated to rare cancer management?

Given the large variety of rare cancers,they take up a significant part of our daily practice. Therefore, we owe it to our patients with rare tumours that we use the knowledge gained in the treatment of the more common cancers to provide them with a better future. This knowledge comes from recent developments in molecular diagnostics, systemic treatments with new drugs and targeted therapies together with advanced technologies in the areas of radiology and radiation therapy. Our authors have analysed the literature and recommend treatments for rare cancers based on results from past studies. We hope that this book will be an aid to those treating rare cancer cases about which, up to now, little has been published, and will reassure our patients that they have not been forgotten.

Pushed by the progress of biology, technology and biomechanics, knee surgery has dramatically evolved in the last decades. “Re-education” consists in training people injured either by illness or the vagaries of life to achieve the best functionality now possible for them. Strangely, the subject is not taught in the normal educational curricula of the relevant professions. It thus tends to be developed anew with each patient, without recourse to knowledge of what such training, or assistance in such training, might be. New paradigms of re-education are in fact possible today, thanks to advances in cognitive science, and new technologies such as virtual reality and robotics. They lead to the re-thinking of the procedures of physical medicine, as well as of re-education.The first part looks anew at re-education in the context of both international classifications of functionality, handicap and health, and the concept of normality. The second part highlights the function of implicit memory in re-education. And the last part shows the integration of new cognition technologies in the new paradigms of re-education.

Technological innovation – combined with scientific research – has always constituted a driving force of transformation in our societies.  At the same time, it is no longer simply possible to transfer technologies from the North to the South; it is also essential to consider technical innovations that are adapted to the social, environmental, cultural and economic conditions of receiving countries, and which can be appropriated by their potential users and as such prove to be real technologies for fostering development. 

The first International Scientific Conference on the topic organized by the UNESCO Chair Technologies for Development at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2010 focused on its four priority sectors: Technologies for Sustainable Development of Habitat and Cities, ICTs for the Environment, Science and Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction, and Technologies for the Production of Sustainable Energy.

This volume reflects the main outcomes of the conference and provides some significant orientation and success criteria for the effective implementation and use of innovative technologies, their aims, their particular applications in the context of developing countries, their accessibility for users, and their appropriation by producers and stakeholders in the field of development both in the North and South, thus ensuring their sustainability. This kind of scientific cooperation also highlights the added values for northern researchers in sharing their knowledge and know-how, leading to a real win-win partnership.

The authors gathered within this book include representatives from academic and research institutions and other organizations from diverse countries and offer a significant synergy of competences, approaches and disciplines.
