Math teachers know the first step to meaningful mathematics discussions is to ask students to share how they solved a problem and make their thinking visible; however, knowing where to go next can be a daunting task.In Intentional Talk and Listening: How to Structure and Lead Productive Mathematical Discussions, Elham Kazemi and Allison Hintz provide teachers with a practical framework for planning and facilitating purposeful math talks that move group discussions to the next level while achieving mathematical and social goals. Each chapter focuses on a different type of conversation, including:● Open Strategy Sharing● Compare and Connect● Why? Let’s Justify● What’s Strategic and Why?● Define and Clarify● Troubleshoot and ReviseIn this second edition of the book, Kazemi and Hintz provide new vignettes and classroom examples. They explore the role of children’s and communities’ funds of knowledge in mathematics problem solving and focus on supporting students’ active participation as listeners and speakers. Written from the stance that all students are sense makers with valuable ideas, Intentional Talk and Listening supports teachers’ decision making as they facilitate conversations that help students make meaning of, and find joy in, math.

When you talk with students about their number sense and computational skills, you're bound to uncover some surprising gaps in their understanding. Knowing how to identify and bridge those gaps is essential for helping students at all levels advance as mathematical thinkers. The Zeroing in on Number and Operations series, which aligns with the Common Core State Standards and the NCTM Sandards and Focal Points, features easy-to-use tools for teaching key concepts in number and operations and for addressing common misconceptions. Sharing the insights they've gained through decades of mathematics teaching and research, Anne Collins and Linda Dacey help you focus on what students really need to know and understand at each grade level. The 30 modules in the grades 5 and 6 flipchart are designed to engage all students in mathematical learning that develops conceptual understanding, addresses common misconceptions, and builds key ideas essential to future learning. The modules are organized into three sections: Whole Numbers and Operations; Fractions; and Decimals. Each module begins with the identification of its Mathematical Focus and the Potential Challenges and Misconceptions associated with those ideas. In the Classroom then suggests instructional strategies and specific activities to implement with your students. A section on Meeting Individual Needs offers ideas for adjusting the activities to reach a broader range of learners. Each activity is supported by a reproducible, and References/Further Reading provides resources for enriching your knowledge of the topic and for gathering more ideas. At grades 5 and 6, the authors focus on the key ideas that are essential at these levels:Place value to billions and thousandthsDivisibility rulesDivision with single and multidigit divisorsOrder of operations to include parenthesesMultiples and factors to include least common multiple and greatest common factorsRational numbers including equivalence between and among fractions and decimalsFraction as ratio including the difference between an additive and multiplicative relationOperations on rational numbers

It’s no secret that our youngest bilingual writers thrive in classrooms filled with conversation, inquiry, play, and wonder, but how can we invite them into the conventions of the Spanish language, engage them in authentic writing experiences, and lean into their natural curiosity around what writers do?Building on the same playful qualities of the invitational process introduced in their best-selling Patterns of Power series, Caroline Sweet, Whitney La Rocca, and Jeff Anderson turn their instructional lens to our youngest writers in bilingual and dual-language classrooms, sharing new ways we can invite them to experiment, have fun, and take risks with writing and language. In this valuable resource, they:introduce the Patterns of Wonder Phases of Emergent Writing in Spanish as a way to reflect on the work young writers are doing and plan for effective, scaffolded instructionoutline an adapted invitational process with a focus on biliteracy developmentposition grammar and concepts about print instruction across three overlapping levels of support: oral language, illustrating, and writing; andfeature over 100 culturally and linguistically diverse picture book recommendations to stir curious classroom conversationsGrounded in discovery, play, conversation, and most of all, wonder, Patterns of Wonder en español brings the authors’ excitement for inquiry and writing instruction to the ways we support our youngest bilingual writers.

"With Learning to Relearn, Sarfo-Mensah has written himself into the canon of scholars who boldly advocate for social justice in schools."—From the foreword by Dr. Yolanda Sealey-RuizRecipient of the 2025 IPPY Awards Gold Medal for Education and the 2024 Foreword INDIES Award for Education Book of the Year!Kwame Sarfo-Mensah’s latest book, Learning to Relearn, challenges educators to embark on a transformative journey toward creating classrooms that embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion. Rooted in the principles of antibias, antiracist (ABAR) education, this book offers a dynamic roadmap for teachers seeking to dismantle systemic biases and foster inclusive spaces that honor intersectional student identities.Sarfo-Mensah skillfully weaves together theory and practice, providing accessible strategies for cultivating antibias, antiracist pedagogies that address the unique experiences of students navigating multiple layers of identity. From inclusive curriculum development to fostering empathetic classroom discussions, this book empowers educators to navigate the nuanced landscape of supporting identities with intentionality and sensitivity.Learning to Relearn is not just a call for change; it's a call for unlearning and relearning, encouraging teachers to continually evolve their practices to meet the diverse needs of their students. Through compelling first-person narratives and actionable insights, this book equips educators with the tools to create culturally-affirming classrooms where every student's identity is not just acknowledged but celebrated. This is an indispensable resource for educators committed to shaping classrooms that reflect the true richness of human experiences.

All students can drive their own learning when we show them how. Humanized, equitable classrooms start with a commitment to building student agency. Step Aside offers clear, streamlined guidance for launching secondary students into high-level work that hinges on their ideas and insights.Sarah Zerwin writes from the complex and challenging space of daily life in a classroom. She knows student-driven learning does not mean students make all decisions about what happens in the classroom. It occupies a more nuanced space where teachers carefully curate the classroom experience and teach students how to navigate it on their own.Sarah has done the work to weave many resources into a Three Step Meaning Making Process that grows students’ thinking. Each chapter offers effective, flexible strategies to put into practice immediately:Reading strategies that work for any text students need or want to readWriting strategies that work for any text students need or want to writeDiscussion strategies that students can use to talk things out with others, no matter the subjectAssessment strategies that show students how to set goals, track their progress, and learn anything they want to learn in their life, in or out of schoolEspecially when we notice our students are struggling, Step Aside reminds us we need to hold ourselves accountable for keeping out of the way of the most important work. Our students must read and write and think and discuss—on their own—to navigate the complexity of their lives.

Do the posters in your classroom create misconceptions about shapes? Upgrade your walls and your instruction with this new set of shapes posters by Christopher Danielson, author of Which One Doesn’t Belong?Designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and conversation about geometry, the posters address and prevent misconceptions and move beyond treating geometry as vocabulary to memorize. Just like in Christopher’s book, each shape is a right answer because each shape has a reason not to belong. Students can talk about their reasons using informal everyday words, specialized mathematical vocabulary, and a mix of both. Often, these posters will spark a need for a new word as well as clarity about its meaning. The posters are appropriate for grades K–8 and beyond. For example, younger students considering the Which Triangle Doesn't Belong? poster will discover that a triangle is a closed shape with three straight sides, no matter which way the triangle is "pointing." Middle grades students will notice and compare attributes of different types of triangles (right, isosceles, scalene, equilateral). Older students will engage with the geometry of special right triangles. All students will wonder, and notice, and think about relationships over time. Each set of eight 18-by-24-inch posters includes one for each of the following: square, rectangle, rhombus, triangle, hexagon, polygon, shape, and curve.
