“Moshe Schein’s life as a surgeon on four continents and his skills as a storyteller make for compelling reading.” Abraham Verghese, Author of Cutting for Stone and The Covenant of WaterThis is a story of a 50-year-long surgical life, across four continents, and numerous hospitals — academic, community, and rural — in a few countries. Unlike the typical memoirs of surgeons, glorifying their accomplishments and paying tribute to our noble profession, this memoir is different: it's not written by a surgical ‘giant’ or a famous scientific innovator; it doesn’t tell the story of a surgical Paganini but rather of a surgical workhorse. It portrays a surgical career in the trenches, as it is, in stark colors, warts and all — topics that others prefer not to write or speak about — complications, malpractice, medical politics, and intrigue. Although ‘surgical’ is its claim to fame, this memoir is aimed not only at surgeons or medical practitioners. Whenever possible, the author portrays events and persons against a background and perspective of the various times and places. The General Surgeon pays tribute to the author's brothers in the trenches — the humble, run-of-the-mill general surgeons worldwide.

Operative trauma surgery is a key element of surgical training world-wide, but many surgical trainees have only limited exposure to it throughout their training. The aim of this book is to provide a detailed technical guide for trauma surgery by two experienced surgical educators who are experts in the field. The original concept behind this text (compared to other operative surgery texts) is a special emphasis on intra-operative judgement, decision-making, and thought processes, as well as technical 'tips and tricks'. The book will be generously illustrated with black-and-white line drawings, but will NOT be a surgical atlas, because there will not be a step-by-step sequence of illustrations for each procedure. The illustrations will be incorporated into the text rather than appearing on separate pages. As such, the book will be an 'operative surgery' book, along the lines of such British classics as Peter Jones' 'Emergency Abdominal Surgery', Hugh Dudley's editions of 'Hamilton Bailey's Emergency Surgery' and Keen's 'Operative Surgery and Management'.

“This is a must read for anyone engaged in the care of complex wounds: concise, full of common sense, and devoid of BS.” -- Ari Leppäniemi, Helsinki, FinlandThe growing number of complex chronic wounds afflicting our aging, sicker, and fatter population has brought about the emergence of the so-called ‘wound care industry’, which, in turn, has become a lucrative business — conducted in thousands of ‘wound care clinics’ mushrooming all around us. A wide range of specialties and qualifications have jumped on the bandwagon to become wound care experts, offering different ‘styles’ of wound care. The dressing, drug, and device industry has joined right in and has flooded the market with immensely costly products, many of which are based on flimsy or fabricated evidence.Undoubtedly, ‘modern’ wound care worldwide is chaotic — compared with most other disciplines and specialties, it could be described as the ‘Wild Wild West’ of patient care. This short monograph attempts to insert common sense into the chaos, emphasizing established truth and pointing out gimmicks, all based on the author’s personal experience. As in the previous books in the series "Schein’s Common Sense" (now in multiple editions and translations), the narrative is ‘no-nonsense’ and not always politically correct. The book is aimed at physicians of all specialties, allied providers, and nurses — anyone who wishes to engage in wound care or is already involved but needs some guidance.

Since Mondors times in the forties of the last century there was no other book in surgery to be written so easy and witty Boris D. Savchuk, World Journal of Surgery This, the fifth edition of Scheins Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery, builds on the reputation of the four previous editions. Already a worldwide benchmark, translated into half a dozen languages, this book guides surgeons logically through the minefields of assessment and management of acute surgical abdominal conditions. Tyro and experienced surgeons alike will benefit from the distilled wisdom contained in these pages. The direct, no-nonsense style gives clear guidance while at the same time providing amusing (or saddening) insights into our collective surgical psyche. Old chapters were revised or rewritten and new chapters have been added, including a completely new colorectal section with its new co-editor. Finally, in an attempt to rejuvenate the book, Danny took over the helm while the aging Moshe was pushed down the line Selected reviews and comments from readers of the previous edition What to say, perhaps the most appropriate medical book ever written. This is written with short punchy chapters making it a very difficult book to put down. By the end I was a total enthusiast this is a text like no other I read Unreservedly recommended to old and young alike. A Must Have Book. I am about to end my chief year in general surgery residency my copy of the first edition shows the wear of half a dozen total read throughs and probably hundreds of referencings... Simply perfect. The best choice in surgery for trainees! It makes the more difficult surgery areas very easy to understand. I recommend it to all surgeons. One of the best books I have read in my life! Must read for all docs out there. But the moral of the book is that if scientific rigorousness (protocols, guidelines, evidence-based) and common sense are at odds, follow common sense.

The structured oral examination (SOE) and viva are age-old integral components of examination pathways in the specialty training of intensive care medicine (ICM). The viva can present a complex interaction between the examiner and delegate, which can often be challenging even hostile! Organisation and structure are integral to success. This core text is tailored to provide a systematic structure covering a broad set of core topics that could legitimately be presented in an ICM exam. The style and discipline have been repeated throughout the answers to provide essential rehearsal as preparation for any viva-based exam. The book is presented as 7 sets of 6 viva examination cycles. This allows for timed practice sessions in the final few weeks leading up to the SOE and viva. The topics covered are pertinent for the British Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FFICM), the European Diploma of Intensive Care Medicine (EDIC) exam, the Australia and New Zealand Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM), the Indian Diploma in Critical Care Medicine (IDCCM), the American Board exams and any other viva-based intensive care medicine exams. This book is a critical companion in the final few weeks of preparation for ICM viva exams.

Intensive care medicine is a dynamic and evolving specialty, requiring its practitioners to be part physician, physiologist and anaesthetist. This requires a firm foundation of knowledge and an ability to apply this to the clinical situation. This book contains 270 multiple choice questions allowing self-assessment of the breadth of knowledge required of the modern intensivist. The book is divided into three papers each consisting of 60 multiple true false (MTF) and 30 single best answer (SBA) questions covering areas including resuscitation, diagnosis, disease management, organ support, and ethical and legal aspects of practice. The MTF questions test factual knowledge and understanding of the evidence base underpinning intensive care medicine, while the SBA questions test the ability of the candidate to prioritise, compete options and make the best decision for the patient. Each question is peer reviewed and accompanied by concise and detailed explanatory notes with references to guide further reading. All the authors are practising intensive care physicians with first-hand experience of professional examinations in the specialty. This book will appeal to intensive care physicians approaching professional examinations worldwide, including the European Diploma, American Board and Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine examinations. In addition, it will appeal to intensive care nurses and allied healthcare professionals wishing to update their knowledge as part of continuing professional development, and to physicians sitting professional examinations in related specialties requiring knowledge of intensive care medicine such as general medicine, general surgery and anaesthesia. This book will complement the existing international best-selling title "Multiple Choice Questions in Intensive Care Medicine" (9781903378 649), also written by Dr Steve Benington.

To the abdominal surgeon a first successful Whipple procedure is what a first combat mission is to the fighter pilot: a symbol of competence -- the fruits of prolonged training. Not many surgeons managed to incorporate their names into a commonly used eponym; Allen Whipple did and so became immortalised as a household name to surgeons world-wide. Yet, little has been known and written about Whipple, the great American surgeon -- the person and his other interests. This is what this book is about: an edited version of Whipple's previously unpublished memories, which until now -- for more than forty years -- has collected dust. In these pages the retired Whipple describes the journey of his life from the very beginning in Persia, where he was born, to the very end in New Jersey where he died. He provides snap shots of himself, his family and friends, his colleagues, and the changing times in which he lived. The editors have abbreviated the original manuscript by a third and have added footnotes and illustrations. An introduction and 'end page' adds perspective to the memoirs. It has been said "God put the pancreas in the back because he did not want surgeons messing with it". Allen Whipple had the courage to mess with the pancreas and to show us how to mess with it successfully. But what kind of man was he and how did he arrive at his achievements? Find out in this book.

Since its publication, about four years ago, the best-seller, "Aphorisms & Quotations for the Surgeon", has found its place in surgeons' personal and public libraries. Surgeons are using the book to 'decorate' their lectures or manuscripts with relevant smart or entertaining entries; some like to quote from the book during teaching rounds or conferences; many simply enjoy it for its collective and eternal surgical wisdom and wit. This book brings an additional medley of aphorisms and quotations for surgeons, sent in by surgeons or retrieved from multiple sources to serve as a companion to the first volume. It is hoped that readers, especially the younger surgeons, will discover that surgical truth is old, that what they think is a novel idea has been said before, and that what they observe around them -- has been observed years ago. It may contribute to their humanity and humility, perhaps even add maturity to their surgical personality and practice, and with a bit of luck, increase their sense of surgical humour -- which in the era of political correctness has tended to dry up.

Dr. Moshe Schein has previously compiled two books of surgical aphorisms and quotations the first book Aphorisms & Quotations for the Surgeon, with its 1500 quotations, and the slimmer A Companion to Aphorisms & Quotations for the Surgeon. Since their publication, both books have become steady bestsellers. Surgeons use the books to decorate their lectures or manuscripts with relevant smart or entertaining entries; some like to quote from the books during teaching rounds or conferences; many simply enjoy them for their collective and eternal surgical wisdom and wit. Now, as Moshe is drifting towards retirement, here is the last in the trilogy of this international bestselling series The Little Book of Aphorisms & Quotations for the Surgeon. The quotes collected within this little book have been gathered since the publication of the last two books in the series. As before, these aphorisms and quotations are retrieved from multiple sources: journals, books, lectures and, more and more, gathered from surgical friends around the world. The decision to include any entry is based on personal taste. Some would question the wisdom or accuracy of individual entries; others may not get the humor or may object to political incorrectness.

This, the 4th edition of Schein's Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery, builds on the reputation of the three previous editions. Already a worldwide benchmark, translated into half a dozen languages, this book guides surgical trainees logically through the minefields of assessment and management of acute surgical abdominal conditions. General surgery as a concept may have been overtaken in many parts of the world by the development of niche specialties, but the need for a cohort of generalists able to deal competently with common surgical emergencies has not gone away. If you recognise this need then this is the book for you! Tyro surgeons and experienced practitioners alike will benefit from the distilled wisdom contained in these pages. The direct, no nonsense, writing style, supported by entertaining cartoons, gives clear guidance while at the same time providing amusing insights into our collective surgical psyche. NOT a standard textbook. Buy it! You will not regret it. Some new editors and authors enhance the new edition. Almost all chapters have been revised to take account of new concepts and modern developments. New chapters have been added and some completely rewritten often with a new emphasis on the importance of a laparoscopic approach.'

Most 'How to write/publish' books are aimed at the scientific community and medical professionals as a whole. To date none has ever been dedicated to surgeons alone. This book is aimed specifically at surgeons who wish to have their work, observations, novel ideas to be published, but do not know the route leading to successful publication in the various leading and reputable journals. Each chapter (21 in total) will attempt to guide the budding writer, using simple and brief language and taking examples from daily life.

For nearly 25 years, the Catchpole cartoon was a hugely popular feature in Autosport magazine. Every week, Catchpole and his friends passed comment on events in motor sport through the skill and humour of artist Barry Foley. Now, Catchpole is back, with the publication of this collection of nearly 400 cartoons as printed in Autosport between 1970 and 1994. This is a unique title, capturing the humour and wisdom of the sport and re-visiting a host of characters including Demon Tweak (the ever-scruffy mechanic), the glamorous Booby Galore, accident-prone Mad Log Malone and veteran German racer Von Turnips.

The primary aim of this book is to provide clear and concise explanations about all aspects of the medico-legal process for surgeons, other doctors and lawyers. A wide range of topics is covered including: how the medico-legal arena is changing; the legal principles involved; how to avoid medico-legal problems; resolving complaints out of court; the surgeon as defendant; the surgeon as expert; the GMC and the Coroner.

Several studies have looked at populations of volunteers, women from the electoral roll and women attending general practices, and have reported the ultrasound appearance of polycystic ovaries in as many as one in three to one in five. If groups of women with irregular periods are looked at, up to 90% will have polycystic ovaries at ultrasound. Similarly, when women with increased facial and body hair are screened, about 90% will have polycystic ovaries, as will three out of four women with acne. It has also been suggested by some studies that women with recurrent miscarriage or early pregnancy loss after in-vitro fertilisation have an increased incidence of polycystic ovaries. However, not all studies support this hypothesis, and additional research is needed to evaluate this further. This book looks at the historical background of this condition; the structure and function of the female genital organs; symptoms and signs; diagnostic techniques; the inheritance of polycystic ovary syndrome; long-term effects; lifestyle factors; polycystic ovaries and the skin; ovulation induction; surgical treatment to induce ovulation; in-vitro fertilisation; pregnancy outcomes.

Any breast operation is a significant event. This book provides information to help to lessen the fear and gives practical advice for patients returning to a normal life.

Following the success of its last symposium and book entitled 'The Evidence for Vascular Surgery', the Joint Vascular Research Group (JVRG) brings you this book. The book describes recent developments and best practice in vascular surgery, with an emphasis on multi-disciplinary care pathways. It is based upon a symposium held in Sheffield in June 2002 that aimed to improve the provision and equality of care for patients with peripheral arterial and venous disease. Many members of the JVRG have contributed to this book, including vascular surgeons, anaesthetists, radiologists, nurses and vascular technologists. The book consists of five sections covering the main areas of management of patients with peripheral vascular disease: Outpatients and medical management; Vascular imaging and endovascular intervention; Vascular surgery; Anaesthesia and theatres; Organisational aspects of care.

This book provides details of all the currently available information concerning the causes, prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, and aims to explain all aspects of the disease in terms that can be easily understood. It deals with the roles of complementary medicine and diet and other aspects for which there is growing evidence, but which many clinicians are reluctant to discuss with their patients.

The launch of clinical governance in the late 1990s was accompanied by a measure of excitement although, at that stage, it was impossible to determine whether this was really to be the start of a quality-driven revolution in healthcare. Since its inception, much has been done to turn the concepts behind clinical governance into practical reality. Have these efforts been successful? Many would argue that the jury is still out. The authors have approached the topic from the diverse backgrounds offered by urological surgery, general practice and public health medicine. The result is a commentary on the evolution of clinical governance that has the firm anchors of practicality and realism. The book looks at clinical governance from the perspective of the practising clinician and explains what clinical governance has to offer them. Doctors, nurses, therapists and managers should all find something of interest and practical value within these pages.

The internet and the equipment through which it is delivered has revolutionised the way business offers its services and consumers access information. The constantly evolving technology will continue to become mobile both in terms of the apparatus used to get online, such as mobile phones, and also the wireless capability which will become widespread. Commercial use of the technology presents huge legal issues and has led to the introduction of significant new laws to govern online trade. However, the approach taken by the EU in regulating the internet differs markedly from that of the United States. Given the degree of trade between the two continents and in particular between the USA and the UK, it is vital that businesses on both sides of the Atlantic understand the diverse legal regimes, whether they operate in European or North American markets. This book provides an overview of the English law treatment of the internet, which is heavily influenced by the EU, and contrasts it where appropriate to American legal governance. The book examines issues including online contractual formation, privacy law across geographical borders, electronic signatures, online marketing and consumer sales over the internet. The book is essential reading for businesses in both lands.

Approximately 45 chapters written by leading international authorities. Each chapter analyses the available literature to produce an authoritative statement about the management of urological disorders. The book includes a concise summary of the best available scientific evidence providing up-to-date information.

What is the evidence? Evidence-based medicine, or EBM which slips off the tongue more readily, seeks to offer proof that what we offer patients whenever we treat them, do a diagnostic test, or recommend anything from an operation to change in life style, is known to be effective. Fifty to 100 years ago, health care was delivered patchily, much less of it was effective, and was based on an image of a kindly doctor treating the sick, who were glad of whatever help could be offered. Now, medicine is effective and whether you look at it as major government expense or big business in private health care insurance, there is no sense in spending money on ineffective treatments, while we do not have enough to spend on what is of proven worth. Individual doctors cannot read everything and cannot possibly synthesise what they do read, so that they are aware of what is proven to be effective and what probably is not. The "The Evidence for ..." series seeks to fill that need. Into "The Evidence for Cardiothoracic Surgery" we have commissioned systematic reviews of the common operations and some innovative treatments, to present the facts to busy doctors. Where is there and where is there not evidence?

A multi-disciplinary team approach within this new book which evaluates the current state-of-play with regard to blood conservation, including a fresh look at the evidence. Contents will cover the Supply and Demand issues; why/how changes have occurred; a historical overview; transfusion transmitted diseases; changing demographics and the projected impact on blood supplies; considerations for transfusion practice; surgical peri-operative techniques; medical management; risk management issues; the role of the Hospital Transfusion Team; educational issues; National Reports/Edicts; clinical networks in blood transfusion.

This book is a topical review of venous disease providing an up-to-date view of management and current issues. It is aimed at professionals involved in the management of patients with venous disease, whether they be a vascular specialist, nurse or technologist, physicians with an interest in venous disease, as well as primary care doctors and nurses who wish to complement their knowledge of the area. Acknowledged experts, active in the field, have covered topics ranging from the history, epidemiology, signs and symptoms, investigation and treatment of venous disease to issues of quality of life, complications and litigation, and setting up a clinical service. The treatment of deep vein thrombosis is discussed together with the controversial area of DVT and travel. Newer techniques of vein ablation, subfascial endoscopic perforator surgery (SEPS) and foam sclerotherapy are also covered. This book should find a place on the bookshelf as an exciting review of contemporary themes and complements traditional textbooks.

This book provides a classic supporting text for teachers and learners in the surgical field. The European Working Time Directive is just one of many factors that will radically change the way doctors work in the future. The aim of this book is to enable all those who teach young surgeons in the clinical setting to think about and prepare for a new and fresh approach to learning. The particular significance of this publication is that it makes a proper distinction between education and training, identifies the reasons why the postgraduate development of doctors as surgeons must involve education rather than merely training, and recognises that the education of surgeons must take place in the clinical setting. The book provides support in five areas: 1. It will enable surgical educators to develop on from the current and traditional teaching/learning relationship. 2. It takes as its basis the importance of professional values. 3. It provides for the first time a thorough educational framework, which will need to be utilised by the learner and educator to establish the educational focus of each trainee placement. 4. For the first time, it supports teachers and learners in developing the processes of reflective practice on a formal basis in surgical education. 5. It takes a new look at the assessment of the trainee in the light of new requirements and the needs of the new approaches to surgical education.

This remarkable book is long overdue. It provides the insights essential for the lay reader to take personal control of their long-term health, and physical and emotional well-being. It empowers and educates the non-doctor like no book before it. The complexities and limitations of both modern medicine and alternative therapies, are explained in a way that is entertaining and easy to understand. More importantly however, the book provides access to state-of-the-art advice, not only for effective diet and weight control, but also for side-stepping Syndrome X and the other common serious illnesses, that confront all of us in the new millennium. Using a patient-centred and evidence-based approach, it reflects the dramatic changes in the way medical care will be delivered in the future i.e. as an equal and mutually respectful partnership between well-informed patient and hopefully, well-informed doctor. Although written to provide the perfect medical advice manual for the lay public, the book is an excellent source of current medical knowledge, relating to the common diseases, and provokes and challenges in such a way, that it is likely to be widely read by the profession at large.

The proposed self-help book is different from all previous IBS books, for it approaches IBS from a new and exciting viewpoint -- that of coping with IBS using concepts and skills based on the individual's own psychological profile. The rationale is that there is uncertainty about the diagnosis and causes of IBS, and there are no treatments which are lastingly effective -- therefore, people with IBS must learn to cope with IBS as best they can. Psychological and social factors are known to influence the course of an illness, and the way people cope with that illness, even when illnesses have demonstrable physiological/biochemical causes. This book discusses the psychosocial factors which are involved in IBS, as a two-way relationship. It discusses the complex way in which mind/brain and body interact, in producing a different IBS experience' for each person who suffers with it. The book shows how a greater knowledge of IBS can lead to a reduction in feelings of being stigmatised and depressed, to a feeling of greater well-being. It shows how sufferers can reduce the impact symptoms have on their day-to-day lives. Complex psychological constructs are explained simply and with the aid of examples and real-life vignettes taken from case studies.

The endovascular specialist has arrived. Times are changing and it is vital for all those interested in endovascular intervention to train in and embrace these new technologies. The chapters in this book have all been written by carefully selected internationally renowned endovascular specialists. Each author is at the cutting edge of the endovascular revolution and they are the architects of change in the treatment of vascular disease. None are specialty-based and will appeal to surgeons, radiologists, cardiologists and all practitioners involved in the endovascular management of vascular disease. The management of aortic, thoracic, carotid, mesenteric and venous disease is changing. This book is designed to update you on these developments and to encourage you to participate in this exciting phase in the treatment of patients with vascular disease. Enjoy the read.
