Anagnorisis, or recognition, has played a central role in the arts and humanities throughout history. It is a universal mode of knowledge in literature and the arts; in sacred texts and scholastic writing; in philosophy; in psychology; in politics and social theory. Recognition is a phenomenon and a fulcrum that makes these discourses possible. To date, no one has attempted a comprehensive discussion of recognition across disciplines, places, and historical periods. Recognition and Modes of Knowledge is the culmination of an interdisciplinary conference on recognition with contributions from international authorities, including Piero Boitani, Roland Le Huenen, Rachel Adelman, and Christina Tarnopolsky. Students and experts in the humanities who desire a rich grounding in the concept of recognition should start with this book.

Home, for me, was not a birthright, but an invention. It seems to me when we speak of home we are speaking of several things, often at once, muddled together into an uneasy stew. We say home and mean origins, we say home and mean belonging. These are two different things: where we come from, and where we are. Writing about belonging is not a simple task. Esi Edugyan chooses to intertwine fact and fiction, objective and subjective in an effort to find out if one can belong to more than one place, if home is just a place or if it can be an idea, a person, a memory, or a dream. How "home" changes, how it changes us, and how every farewell carries the promise of a return. Readers of Canadian literature, armchair travellers, and all citizens of the global village will enjoy her explorations and reflections, as we follow her from Ghana to Germany, from Toronto to Budapest, from Paris to New York.

"We gambled everything-our careers, our fortunes, the future of our nation-and every day brought new discoveries. It was like living on a frontier."-Arne Nielsen The memoir of Canadian petroleum industry leader Arne Nielsen is not a conventional business biography. During his six decades in the business, he witnessed critical events in the oil industry that influenced Canada's economic history. From rain-soaked tents on the Arctic barren land to the luxurious New York offices of a multinational oil company, Arne Nielsen's expansive knowledge of geology and the oil industry made him one of the most influential and well-known figures of his time. His memoir provides crucial details and unique perspectives on events that will be of interest to the next generation of oil industry executives as well as to consumers, economists, and ecologists. Foreword by Peter C. Newman.

A child's face, a forgotten scent, or a distinctive flavour engages memory and inspires longing. Ken Haigh brings us tantalizingly close to his own vision of longing for a place, a people, a time, as he revisits those all-too-fleeting years as a young school teacher in the remote Himalayan village of Khaling, Bhutan. These experiences in an exotic country will leave you yearning for ancient Buddhist temples, winding mountain trails, and a simpler way of life. This memoir will captivate the vicarious traveller in each of us.

Bodies of Art, Bodies of Labour by Kate Beaton, award-winning author of Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands, explores connections between class, literature, and art from Cape Breton Island. She addresses the fact that people from poor or working-class backgrounds face significant barriers entering the Canadian arts scene and shows that if they do not write themselves into stories, others will, often with damaging results. Beaton thoughtfully examines personal and working-class legacies, celebrating the authenticity and power of truly seeing ourselves and each other in the art that we create.

“Turning to face north, face the north, we enter our own unconscious. Always, in retrospect, the journey north has the quality of dream.” Margaret Atwood, “True North”.In this interdisciplinary collection, sixteen scholars from twelve countries explore the notion of the North as a realm of the supernatural. This region has long been associated with sorcerous inhabitants, mythical tribes, metaphysical forces of good and evil, and a range of supernatural qualities. It was both the sacred abode of the gods and a feared source of menacing invaders and otherworldly beings. Whether from the perspective of traditional Jewish lore or of contemporary black metal music, few motifs in European cultural history show such longevity and broad appeal.Contributors: Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough, Angela Byrne, Danielle Marie Cudmore, Stefan Donecker, Brenda S. This first narrative in the Women’s Voices from Gaza Series turns the clock back more than ninety years and invites readers on a journey of reimagining a once-upon-a-time in Palestine. Madeeha Hafez Albatta’s story recounts a life of happiness, uncertainty, loss, and also, ultimately, of pride, resistance, and hope. Weaving together many narrative threads, A White Lie unearths a version of history long excluded from mainstream discourse, illuminating a vibrant culture, rich community relations, old traditions, and grand resistance. Madeeha was born and raised in Khan Younis, a town in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, and her life took her, along with her family, across mandatory Palestine to Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Tunis, the United States, Germany, Greece, Austria, and Canada. In 1938, Madeeha had to resort to tricking her family into allowing her to attend college. That “white lie” changed her life forever. She became a teacher while still in her teens and then the principal of a school while in her early twenties. As a teacher and headmistress, a campaigner for rights, an activist and community organizer, a mother, and a champion of dignity, Madeeha witnessed some of the most turbulent periods of Palestine’s recent history. Her narrative preserves minute details of distinctly Palestinian individual and collective life through different eras and regimes. It depicts a vibrant culture, old traditions, customs, and other critical features of Palestinian society that readers rarely encounter. The Women’s Voices from Gaza Series honours women’s unique and underrepresented perspectives on the social, material, and political realities of Palestinian life. Foreword by Salman Abu Sitta.

How to Clean a Fish describes an extended family stay in Portugal, full of food, adventure, and the search for home. Offered the opportunity to live in Costa da Caparica for an extended period, Esmeralda Cabral jumped at the chance to return to the country of her birth. Together with her Canadian-born husband, children, and Portuguese Water Dog, Maggie, Cabral makes new and nostalgic discoveries—a labyrinth of cobblestone alleys and beautiful painted tiles, a delicious bica and pastel de nata, a classic fado concert, the gentle ribbing of local fishmongers, a damaging high tide—translating words and emotions for her family along the way. Packed with local cuisine and customs, tales of language barriers and bureaucracy, and threaded with that irresistible need to connect with the culture of our birth, How to Clean a Fish is for readers curious about life in Portugal and for anyone who has moved from one place to another and is seeking their own version of home.

The style of my book must be in small pieces, as my life has been in pieces. (Jalal Barzanji) From 1986 to 1988 poet and journalist Jalal Barzanji endured imprisonment and torture under Saddam Hussein's regime because of his literary and journalistic achievements-writing that openly explores themes of peace, democracy, and freedom. It was not until 1998, when he and his family took refuge in Canada, that he was able to consider speaking out fully on these topics. Still, due to economic necessity, Barzanji's dream of writing had to wait until he was named Edmonton's first Writer-in-Exile in 2007. This literary memoir is the project Barzanji worked on while Writer-in-Exile, and it is the first translation of his work from Kurdish into English. Foreword by John Ralston Saul.

How can we approach Margaret Laurence's writing in a postcolonial and postmodern age? Challenging Territory is a collection of essays that examine positionality across the range of Laurence's writing, from her early journalism through the fiction to the late nonfiction.

Emma Minde’s portraits of the family into which she was given in marriage are touching and instructive. They show us a young woman leaving her home at Saddle Lake, Alberta, to join a household of strangers in Hobbema—with not only a husband she has yet to meet, but also four strong-willed adults who will shape her life: her husband’s parents, Mary-Jane and Dan Minde, and Dan Minde’s younger brother Sam and his wife Mary. Emma Minde’s autobiography focusses on her relationship with these two women, Mary-Jane Minde and Mary Minde. The education that the newly arrived wife received in their households was built on obedience, hard work and a firmly held set of beliefs, seen as essential preparation for a life of uncertainty and rapid change, hardship and constant struggle. These reminiscences, told to Freda Ahenakew, offer rare insights into a life history guided by two powerful forces: the traditional world of the Plains Cree and the Catholic missions with their boarding-schools, designed to re-make their charges entirely. Rarely has the interplay of these two worlds—often in conflict, but often also, it seems, very much in harmony with one another—been sketched so eloquently as in Emma Minde’s autobiography. Emma Minde’s stories are presented as she told them in Cree, with a translation into English on facing pages. With its Cree-English Glossary and an English Index to the Glossary, this work is an important Cree language resource.

"When our new administration took over a year and a half ago...we saw uncontrolled spending," claimed Alberta Premier Ralph Klein in June, 1994. In fact, Alberta had the tightest controls on spending in Canada throughout the very period when the Klein government has claimed costs were soaring out of control. We are, says Taft, victims of politically induced amnesia and politically reconstructed history. Under Ralph Klein's government, public programs in Alberta—including health care—have become the most poorly supported in Canada. At the same time, the Alberta government has spent more on subsidies to the private sector than has any other province. Shredding the Public Interest delivers a brisk and highly readable critique of Alberta's creation and elimination of its deficit over the past quarter century.

This long-awaited, landmark volume chronicles Alberta writing: the writers, their works, and their vigorous and changing landscape. A must for anyone interested in the cultural history of western Canada.

As Germany approaches the twenty-first century, it faces a variety of political, economic and social problems that put the recently united country to the test. Experiencing a dual crisis, Germany's challenge is to manage both the transformation to a postindustrial society and the effects of unification. International scholars address the different aspects of the predicaments Germany finds itself in, and reflect concerns and questions that have been raised about the future of the German model in the broadest sense.

Focusing on the Depression, Second World War, and early post-War period, Robert Ascah examines the interaction of politics and capital markets in Canada from the perspective of the debt management function. Ascah's insightful study explores the Dominion Government's dealings with domestic and international finance capital and their reaction to the policies of Alberta's Social Credit government, and in particular the April 1936 default.

An engaging text with beautiful full-colour photos, Prairie Water is a must-read for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

A re-evaluation of regionalism in Canadian and American writing, A Sense of Place provides a comparative approach to the issue within a continental framework. The contributors to this collection-including Frank Davey, Marjorie Pryse, and Jonathan Hart-look at a broad range of writers. They explore regionalism on both sides of the border in light of the central political, cultural, literary, and theoretical debates of our times.

Survivors of spousal abuse inevitably fail to find answers in the realm of reason as they try to make sense of their pain and suffering. Focussing on the healing power of spirituality, Lifelines offers a celebration of healing, a message of hope, and a way of helping. Lifelines addresses family violence and spirituality in a community and cultural context. It is a collection of knowledge, experiences, and impressions of people who have discovered that the process of healing depends on one's spirituality and inner strength.

Education has become a battlefield, the classroom the arena where the contest is fought. The 1997 Ontario teachers' strike, the federal government's Millennium Scholarship, and a wave of protests across the country are among the signals that the war is heating up. Alberta stands as a Canadian model of radical education reform, propelled by economic necessity. But is all reform necessarily right or good?-and who decides? A range of commentators-teachers, scholars, parents, and others-discuss the conflict in Alberta's schools.

Alberta's contradictory landscape has fired the imaginative energies of writers for centuries. The sweep of the plains, the thrust of the Rockies, and the long roll of the woodlands have left vivid impressions on all of Alberta's writers--both those who passed through Alberta in search of other horizons and those who made it their home. The Literary History of Alberta surveys writing in and about Alberta from prehistory to the middle of the twentieth century. It includes profiles of dozens of writers (from the earnestly intended to the truly gifted) and their texts (from the commercial to the arcane). It reminds us of long-forgotten names and faces, figures who quietly--or not so quietly--wrote the books that underpin Alberta's thriving literary culture today. Melnyk also discusses the institutions that have shaped Alberta's literary culture. The Literary History of Alberta is an essential text for any reader interested in the cultural history of western Canada, and a landmark achievement in Alberta's continuing literary history.

The troubles of 1885 are a topic of enduring fascination. Gabriel Dumont in Paris is a fictional retelling of the events leading up to the Northwest Rebellion, focussing on the thoughts and actions of Metis leader Gabriel Dumont. Jordan Zinovich reconstructs the man from a multiplicity of voices, leaving us to draw our own understanding of Riel's charismatic lieutenant.
