The story of Maria Pepe, an eleven-year-old girl who changed the course of Little League history.Maria Pepe loved baseball. When Little League formed in her hometown in 1972, she was eager to prove herself as a competitor. There was only one problem: Little League was not open to girl players. This didn't stop Maria. She took her glove and joined her friends, Nicky and Louie, at tryouts. She could hit, pitch, and catch as good as any of the boys-better than many, even, and it was no surprise that Maria made the team. Little did she know, she would make history when the Little League officials refused to let her play because she was a girl.Highlighting resilience and bravery in the face of opposition, this powerful story details the true events that led to girls being able to play Little League-all told from Maria's first-person perspective as a young athlete.

Elizabeth Warren shares the incredible story of the first female senator of Massachusetts. Elizabeth came from a struggling middle-class family in Oklahoma City. After a heart attack put Elizabeth’s father out of work, she helped out by babysitting, waitressing, and sewing, all while shining as a star member of her school’s debate team. Debate taught Elizabeth how to fight with her words, a skill that eventually won her a state championship and a college scholarship. As a lawyer and law professor, Elizabeth learned why it was so difficult for working-class families like her own to advance economically, and today she continues to fight (with her words) for the poor and middle-class in her role as a senator. Releasing in time for the 2018 election season, Elizabeth Warren emphasizes the importance of being outspoken—of using your words to fight for both yourself and for those who need your help.

In 9 9 Bernice Sandler was finishing her doctorate in Education at the University of Maryland, teaching part-time at the university, and trying to secure a full-time position. Despite her excellent credentials, it became clear she wasn amp rsquo t even being considered. But why? she wondered. amp ldquo Let amp rsquo s face it, amp rdquo a male colleague said, amp ldquo you come on too strong for a woman. amp rdquo Those fateful words brought sex discrimination home for Sandler. Facing it herself, front and center in her own workplace, meant she could no longer be ambivalent about women amp rsquo s rights. She could no longer buy the media coverage of feminists as amp ldquo man-hating, amp rdquo amp ldquo abrasive, amp rdquo and amp ldquo unfeminine. amp rdquo But what could she do? Sandler soon discovered that none of the obvious laws prohibiting discrimination covered sex discrimination in education. Sandler's work led to the passage of Title IX-making it illegal, once and for all, for a federally funded institution to discriminate against someone based on their sex, including in education. This had a profound effect for women in the workplace, in school, and in sports. Bernice Sandler and the Fight for Title IX that drives home the message that it doesn amp rsquo t take a person with power to make a difference. More often, it takes determination. When confronted with injustice, regular people can effect change. Also includes extensive backmatter about How To Be an Activist written by Know Your IX, a survivor- and youth-led project of Advocates for Youth that aims to empower students to end sexual and dating violence in their schools. 2 22 FOREWORD INDIES FINALIST
