The long history of interpretation of the three Johannine letters has been largely characterized, at least since Irenaeus in the late second century, by the assumption that the Elder was addressing the Gnostic heresy. In recent years, particularly with the work of Raymond Brown, attention has been focused on the internal schism within the Johannine (or Beloved Disciple''s) community, thus taking the first epistle as a corrective to secessionists'' misguided attempts to read the Gospel of John in an advanced, spiritualizing manner.Birger Olsson returns to a less common perspective, one that views the crisis facing the Elder as a wholly intra-Jewish problem. The Johannine community comprised Jewish believers who regarded Jesus as the long-promised Messiah of Israel, but at some point in the community''s life, under the leadership of one Diotrephes, some members of the community chose to reject this conviction and to entice other members to do likewise. Olsson anchors his thoroughgoing interpretation of the three letters in this conflict among Jewish Christians over the nature of the Messiah and the renewal of Israel''s ancient covenant. Among other things, this implies that the letters were written in reverse order of their numbering.

Birger Olsson var endast 17 år då han 1898 gav sig ut på havet för första gången. Då tog han hyra på en ångare som hette "Hemland". Efter att huvudsakligen rest runt på Östersjön återvände han kort till Sverige innan han gav sig ut igen på våren 1899 med ångaren "Vanland" och hamnade i Liverpool, England. Där rymmer han tillsammans med en kamrat och hamnar slutligen på segelskutan "Union" och hans äventyr ut i världen tar sin verkliga början.Följ med Birger och hans kamrater när de seglar iväg till andra sidan jorden, blir jagade av infödingar i Samoa, upplev stormarna runt Kap Horn, träffa Neptun och följ rymningen i Nya Zeeland. Historien avslutas med Bittes äventyr i München 1923, där hans äldre bror Alf ingick i en berömd stråkkvartett. Bitte tjatar sig till att få åka dit för att bli riktig konstnär, bli en ny Leonardo. Pengar hade han tjänat genom att massproducera tavlor med kända Skaramotiv. München 1923 var inte vad som helst, ganska skrämmande för en blyg 17 åring. Bröderna ingick i den skandinaviska kolonin där flera kända namn passerade revy. Han såg också sin jämnåriga Klaus Mann med en betydligt äldre pojkvän utklädd till Heine! Han såg till och med Hitler med entourage på en restaurang som några veckor senare var helt demolerad. När pengarna tog slut var det lätt att åka hem. Den blå sjömanskostymen är inte hans första bok. Hans penna har flödat hela hans liv från spextexter, julklappsversar, akademiska avhandlingar, journalistik om politik, filmrecensioner, äventyrsberättelser, deckare, handlingsprogram för nytt politiskt parti, läroböcker och romaner. Han skrev oavbrutet och han har skrivit många varianter på denna bok innan han beslöt att nu fick detta vara den sista. Han sörjde över att inte få den utgiven medan han levde, men han dog ju så plötsligt1984.
