Subjektiv historieingång har blivit allt populärare. Både på omedierat och medierat plan går trenden till att själv vilja veta hur det kändes att leva förr. Det svenska TV-programmet Historieätarna är inte den första medieringen av nutidsmänniskor som iscensätter det förflutna genom att återuppleva historisk vardag, men det utgör ett nytt exempel genom sitt mål att både underhålla och förmedla kunskap. Denna studie ansluter sig dock inte till diskussionen om huruvida subjektivt återupplevande av det förflutna kan generera historisk kunskap eller inte, utan belyser hur historisk autenticitet skapas för en TV-publik. Inte enbart programledarna återupplever nämligen historien på det mest subjektiva viset, genom sina kroppar, utan även TV-publiken. De äckelkänslor som den historiska maten i programmet framkallar är så starka och direkta sinnesintryck att även TV-tittarna får egna kroppsliga reaktioner i form av exempelvis skratt eller kväljningar. I och med att alla, nutida som dåtida människor upplever äckel i samma mån och på grund av den lockelse äckel utgör kan denna studie bidra till att ge inblick i det västerländska samhällets civilisationsprocess och visa att äckelkänslor ägnar sig bättre än någon annan subjektiv upplevelse för att mediera känslor och låta TV-tittarna själva återuppleva historien.

This edited volume, Excellent MSc Dissertations 2018, is the third in the series that brings a selection of eight postgraduate dissertations, written by the students who undertook the MSc degree in Media and Communication at Lund University, in Sweden and graduated in June 2018. During the Masters Programme in Lund, students develop their curiosity for global issues that concern us all and are trained theoretically and methodologically for two years to ask critical questions and explore the place, the role and the use of media in people’s lives. The thesis is the opportunity for the students to discover their passion for research, to be creative and original in their research design and to seek answers for the burning question that they are curious to find out. The studies in this volume draw our attention to the multi-faceted media use and production in people’s everyday life that impacts political, social, economic and cultural structures. The authors in this volume stand out by their critical approach to media production and audience engagement. The chapters talk to each other within two underlying threads. The first one examines issues concerning politics, power and inequality through investigating both traditional and new media practices. The second thread delves into the place of media practices in social and cultural processes, exploring the nexus between identity, the self, the family as well as the wider society we live in.

There is a growing realization among international relations scholars and practitioners that religion is a critical factor in global politics. The Iranian Revolution, the September 11 attacks, the ethno-religious conflicts such as the ones in the former Yugoslavia and Sri Lanka are among the many reasons for this increased focus on religion in international affairs. The rise of religious political parties across the world ranging from the Christian Democrats in Europe to Bharatiya Janata Party in India similarly illustrated religion's heightened international profile. Despite all this attention, it is challenging to situate religion within a discipline which has been dominantly secular from its inception. Only a few existent works have ventured to integrate religion into core international relations theories such as Classical Realism, Neorealism, Neoliberalism, Constructivism and the English school. Mandatory Madness offers a new perspective on a pivotal period in the history of modern Palestine, by putting mental illness and the psychiatric encounters it engendered at the heart of the story. Through a careful and creative reading of an eclectic mix of archival and published material, Mandatory Madness reveals how a range of actors - British colonial officials, Zionist health workers, Arab doctors and nurses, and Palestinian families - responded to mental illness in the decades before 1948. Rather than a concern of European Jewish psychiatric experts alone, questions around the causes, nature, and treatment of mental illness were negotiated across diverse and sometimes surprising sites in mandate Palestine: not only in underfunded and overcrowded government mental hospitals and private Jewish clinics, certainly, but also in family homes and neighbourhood streets, in colonial courtrooms and prisons and census offices, and in the itineraries of shaykhs and patients alike as they crossed newly drawn borders within the Levant. Bringing together histories of medicine, colonialism, and the modern Middle East, Mandatory Madness highlights how the seemingly personal and private matter of mental illness generated distinctive forms of entanglement: between colonial state and society, Arabs and Jews, and Palestine and the wider region.

Religious dimension of contemporary conflicts and the rise of faith-based movements worldwide require policymakers to identify the channels through which religious leaders can play a constructive role. While religious fundamentalisms are in the news every day, we do not hear about the potential and actual role of religious actors in creating a peaceful and just society. Countering this trend, Sandal draws attention to how religious actors helped prepare the ground for stabilizing political initiatives, ranging from abolition of apartheid (South Africa), to the signing of the Lome Peace Agreement (Sierra Leone). Taking Northern Ireland as a basis and using declarations and speeches of more than forty years, this book builds a new perspective that recognizes the religious actors' agency, showing how religious actors can have an impact on public opinion and policymaking in today's world.
