Doktor Zjivago är en storartad episk roman om Ryssland under en omvälvande och våldsam tid, från kejsardöme till Sovjetdiktatur - och en av de mest anslående kärlekshistorier som har berättats. Ryssland härjas mellan 1902 och 1929 av två revolutioner, ett världskrig och ett inbördeskrig. Medan tusentals människoliv omintetgörs och landet trasas sönder slits läkaren och poeten Jurij Zjivago mellan kärleken till fru och barn och den till den gåtfulla Lara. Han lämnar Moskva och flyttar till Uralbergen för att söka trygghet för sin familj men dras i stället in i kriget mellan de röda och de vita. BORIS PASTERNAK föddes år 1880 i Moskva i en judisk familj. Han studerade musik och filosofi och försörjde sig som översättare av bland annat William Shakespeare och Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Redan före succén med Doktor Zjivago var han en hyllad och populär poet. Sovjetiska myndigheter tvingade honom dock att tacka nej till Nobelpriset 1958. Först 1988 gavs romanen ut i Pasternaks hemland. Han avled år 1960.
