This volume constitutes the proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Multi-Objective Programming and Goal Programming: Theory & Appli cations (MOPGP'02) held in Nara, Japan on June 4-7, 2002. Eighty-two people from 16 countries attended the conference and 78 papers (including 9 plenary talks) were presented. MOPGP is an international conference within which researchers and prac titioners can meet and learn from each other about the recent development in multi-objective programming and goal programming. The participants are from different disciplines such as Optimization, Operations Research, Math ematical Programming and Multi-Criteria Decision Aid, whose common in terest is in multi-objective analysis. The first MOPGP Conference was held at Portsmouth, United Kingdom, in 1994. The subsequent conferenes were held at Torremolinos, Spain in 1996, at Quebec City, Canada in 1998, and at Katowice, Poland in 2000. The fifth conference was held at Nara, which was the capital of Japan for more than seventy years in the eighth century. During this Nara period the basis of Japanese society, or culture established itself. Nara is a beautiful place and has a number of historic monuments in the World Heritage List. The members of the International Committee of MOPGP'02 were Dylan Jones, Pekka Korhonen, Carlos Romero, Ralph Steuer and Mehrdad Tamiz.

This volume contains articles accepted for presentation during The Intelligent Information Processing and Web Mining Conference IIS:IIPWM'03 which was held in Zakopane, Poland, on June 2-5, 2003. This conference extends a series of 12 successful symposia on Intelligent Information Systems, organized by the Institute of Computer Science of Polish Academy of Sciences, devoted to new trends in (broadly understood) Artificial Intelligence. The idea of organizing such meetings dates back to 1992. Our main in tention guided the first, rather small-audience, workshop in the series was to resume the results gained in Polish scientific centers as well as contrast them with the research performed by Polish scientists working at the universities in Europe and USA and their foreign collaborators. This idea proved to be attractive enough that we decided to continue such meetings. As the years went by, the workshops has transformed into regular symposia devoted to such fields like Machine Learning, Knowledge Discovery, Natural Language Processing, Knowledge Based Systems and Reasoning, and Soft Computing (i. e. Fuzzy and Rough Sets, Bayesian Networks, Neural Networks and Evo lutionary Algorithms). At present, about 50 papers prepared by researches from Poland and other countries are usually presented. This year conference is an attempt to draw a much broader international audience on the one hand, and to devote much more attention to the newest developments in the area of Artificial Intelligence. Therefore special calls for contributions on artificial immune systems and search engines.

I am very glad that our conference has established itself as an international forum for the discussion of new results in the ?eld of Com- tational Intelligence. Again all papers had to undergo a thorough review: each one was judged by ?ve referees to guarantee a solid quality of the programme. From the beginning of the Fuzzy-Days on, Lot? A. Zadeh felt associated withtheconference.Iwouldliketoexpressmygratitudeforhisencouragement and support and I am particularly glad that he once again delivers a keynote speech. Much to my pleasure Janusz Kacprzyk, Jong-Hwan Kim, Enrique Trillas and Eyke Hullermey .. er have also agreed to present new results of their work as keynote speakers. With Prof. Jong-Hwan Kim of the KoreanAdvanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) a colleague takes part in this year's Fuzzy-Days to whom I am indebted because he has inspired me and my colleagues to turn our attention towards the exciting ?eld of Robot Soccer. Within a few years Robot Soccer has become an accepted test ?eld for robotic research and the development of Multi Agent Systems.The importance of Computational Intelligence for these applications is evident. We address this topic not only with a dedicated session, but we will also organise a robot soccer match to demonstrate to the participants the entertaining quality of robot soccer as well as the challenging scienti?c problems.

Fuzzy theory has become a subject that generates much interest among the courses for graduate students. However, it was not easy to find a suitable textbook to use in the introductory course and to recommend to the students who want to self-study. The main purpose of this book is just to meet that need. The author has given lectures on the fuzzy theory and its applications for ten years and continuously developed lecture notes on the subject. This book is a publication of the modification and summary of the lecture notes. The fundamental idea of the book is to provide basic and concrete concepts of the fuzzy theory and its applications, and thus the author focused on easy illustrations of the basic concepts. There are numerous examples and figures to help readers to understand and also added exercises at the end of each chapter. This book consists of two parts: a theory part and an application part. The first part (theory part) includes chapters from 1 to 8. Chapters 1 and 2 introduce basic concepts of fuzzy sets and operations, and Chapters 3 and 4 deal with the multi-dimensional fuzzy sets. Chapters 5 and 6 are extensions of the fuzzy theory to the number and function, and Chapters 7 and 8 are developments of fuzzy properties on the probability and logic theories.

th This book contains papers accepted for presentation at the 4 International Conference on Computer Recognition Systems CORES'05, May 22-25, 2005, Rydzyna Castle (Poland), This conference is a continuation of a series of con ferences on similar topics (KOSYR) organized each second year, since 1999, by the Chair of Systems and Computer Networks, Wroclaw University of Tech nology. An increasing interest to those conferences paid not only by home but also by foreign participants inspired the organizers to transform them into conferences of international range. Our expectations that the community of specialists in computer recognizing systems will find CORES'05 a proper form of maintaining the tradition of the former conferences have been confirmed by a large number of submitted papers. Alas, organizational constraints caused a necessity to narrow the acceptance criteria so that only 100 papers have been finally included into the conference program. The area covered by accepted papers is still very large and it shows how vivacious is scientific activity in the domain of computer recognition methods and systems. It contains vari ous theoretical approaches to the recognition problem based on mathematical statistics, fuzzy sets, morphological methods, wavelets, syntactic methods, genetic algorithms, artificial neural networks, ontological models, etc. Most attention is still paid to visual objects recognition; however, acoustic, tex tual and other objects are also considered. Among application areas medical problems are in majority; recognition of faces, speech signals and textual in formation processing methods being also investigated.

The international conference Intelligent Information Processing and Web Mining IIS:IIPWM’05, organized in Gda?sk-Sobieszewo on 13–16th June, 2005, was a continuation of a long tradition of conferences on applications of Arti?cial Intelligence (AI) in Information Systems (IS), organized by the Institute of Computer Science of Polish Academy of Sciences in cooperation with other scienti?c and business institutions. The Institute itself is deeply engaged in research both in AI and IS and many scientists view it as a leading institution both in fundamental and - plied research in these areas in Poland. The originators of this conference series, Prof. M. D?browski and Dr. M. Michalewicz had in 1992 a long-term goal of bringing together scientists and industry of di?erent braches from Poland and abroad to achieve a creative synthesis. One can say that their dream has come to reality. Scientists from ?ve continents made their subm- sions to this conference. A brief look at the a?liations makes international cooperation visible. The research papers have either a motivation in c- crete applications or are o?-springs of some practical requests. SVMs have emerged as very successful pattern recognition methods in recent years [16]. SVMs have yielded superior performance in various applications such as; text categorization [15], and face detection [12], content-based image retrieval [6], and learning image similarity [4]. The motivation here is detection of suspicious bags in a security situation. The usual method for bomb personnel is to blow up a suspicious bag, and any explosives contained therein. However, if the bag contains chemical, biological or radiological canisters, this may lead to disastrous results. Furthermore, the “bl- up” method also destroys important clues such as fingerprints, type of explosive, detonators and other signatures of importance for forensic analysis. Extraction of the bag contents using telerobotics avoids these problems [8]. In a telerobotic system, it is advantageous to automate bag classification which is coupled to robotic tactics such as shaking out of the bags contents. For cooperative hum- robot interaction, in situations when autonomous capabilities fail, a human may be called in to distinguish the bag type. Here we focus on the autonomous operation of such a telerobotic system. In the autonomous mode, bags are classified by type using SVMs for the purpose of identifying initial manipulator grasp points. One side of the gripper must slide under the bag, and because of slippage, the grasp may fail. Thus, it is of importance to realize the type of bag, and the location of the opening before the grasp point assessment is made.

Thesubmitted paperscoverednewcomputing paradigms,amongothersin biologically motivated methods, advanced data analysis, new machine lea- ing paradigms, natural language processing, new optimization technologies, applied data mining using statistical and non-standard approaches. The idea of soft computing emerged in the early 1990s from the fuzzy systems c- munity, and refers to an understanding that the uncertainty, imprecision and ig- rance present in a problem should be explicitly represented and possibly even - ploited rather than either eliminated or ignored in computations. For instance, Zadeh de?ned ‘Soft Computing’ as follows: Soft computing differs from conventional (hard) computing in that, unlike hard computing, it is tolerant of imprecision, uncertainty and partial truth. In effect, the role model for soft computing is the human mind. Recently soft computing has, to some extent, become synonymous with a hybrid approach combining AI techniques including fuzzy systems, neural networks, and biologically inspired methods such as genetic algorithms. Here, however, we adopt a more straightforward de?nition consistent with the original concept. Hence, soft methods are understood as those uncertainty formalisms not part of mainstream s- tistics and probability theory which have typically been developed within the AI and decisionanalysiscommunity.Thesearemathematicallysounduncertaintymodelling methodologies which are complementary to conventional statistics and probability theory.

Probability theory has been the only well-founded theory of uncertainty for a long time. It was viewed either as a powerful tool for modelling random phenomena, or as a rational approach to the notion of degree of belief. During the last thirty years, in areas centered around decision theory, artificial intelligence and information processing, numerous approaches extending or orthogonal to the existing theory of probability and mathematical statistics have come to the front. The common feature of those attempts is to allow for softer or wider frameworks for taking into account the incompleteness or imprecision of information. Many of these approaches come down to blending interval or fuzzy interval analysis with probabilistic methods. This book gathers contributions to the 4th International Conference on Soft methods in Probability and Statistics. Its aim is to present recent results illustrating such new trends that enlarge the statistical and uncertainty modeling traditions, towards the handling of incomplete or subjective information. It covers a broad scope ranging from philosophical and mathematical underpinnings of new uncertainty theories, with a stress on their impact in the area of statistics and data analysis, to numerical methods and applications to environmental risk analysis and mechanical engineering. A unique feature of this collection is to establish a dialogue between fuzzy random variables and imprecise probability theories.

The success of Bioinformatics in recent years has been prompted by research in mole- lar biology and medicine in initiatives like the human genome project. The volume and diversification of data has increased so much that it is very hard if not impossible to analyze it by human experts. The analysis of this growing body of data, intensified by the development of a number of high-throughput experimental techniques that are generating the so called 'omics' data, has prompted for new computational methods. New global approaches, such as Systems Biology, have been emerging replacing the reductionist view that dominated biology research in the last decades, requiring the coordinated efforts of biological researchers with those related to data analysis, mathematical modelling and computer science. Computational methods have been helping in tasks related to knowledge discovery, modelling and optimization tasks. This workshop brings the opportunity to discuss applications of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology exploring the interactions between computer scientists, bio- gists and other scientific researchers. The IWPACBB technical program includes 29 papers (23 long papers and 6 short papers) selected from a submission pool of 51 papers, from 9 different countries. The Symposium on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence (UCAmI) began as a workshop held in 2003 in San Sebastián (Spain) under the Spanish Artificial Intelligence Conference. This event gathered 32 attendees and 18 papers were p- sented. The second edition, already as a Symposium, took place in Granada (Spain) under the first Spanish Computer Science Conference (CEDI). Later, in 2006, a s- ond workshop was celebrated in Ciudad Real and, in 2007; the second Symposium was organized in Zaragoza by the CEDI conference. Now we continue to work on the organization of this event in Salamanca, a beautiful Spanish city. The European Community and the Sixth and Seventh Framework Programs - courage researchers to explore the generic scope of the AmI vision. In fact, some researchers have a crucial role in this vision. Emile Aarts from Philips describes - bient Intelligence as "the integration of technology into our environment, so that p- ple can freely and interactively utilize it". This idea agrees with the proposal of Mark Weiser regarding the Ubiquitous Computing paradigm.
