Rural settings have much to challenge, and contribute, to the study of multilingualism, hitherto largely based on urban and northern settings. This monograph is based on a documentation of linguistic practices and perceptions in a village in the Casamance, Senegal, West Africa. Through the study of linguistic biographies, repertoires and language use, this volume incorporates a variety of perspectives into detailed and nuanced analyses of linguistic practices and examines the cultural-ideological links between language and spatiality. It explores different understandings of mono- and multilingualism, using a scalar-chronotopic approach. The village of Essyl is associated with monolingualism and at the same time a default multilingual repertoire, explained as a "way of speaking" or an inclusive (linguistic) practice. The volume contributes both theoretically and methodologically to the study of multilingualism and engages directly with topical debates around language naming and translanguaging. The book will be of interest to postgraduate students and established researchers in the fields of sociolinguistics and anthropological linguistics, in particular to those working in highly multilingual rural settings.

This book addresses increasingly diverse language learning trajectories in a modern, globalized world, specifically outside of formal classroom situations and with respect to second and additional language practices. This includes, but is not restricted to, intersections of formal and informal learning, computer-mediated contexts as well as family contexts and language learning in multilingual contexts. The book provides a current and specifically anthropological view on the second and additional language acquisition in non-school settings through various studies. It is unique in its focus and scope and is relevant to anthropologists and linguists, who are interested in the intersection of language and culture.

The book explores the change over time in language-society relations in a multilingual periphery of Egypt. It examines the role of language ideologies in the construction and negotiation of social identities in the processes of contact, maintenance and shift typical of multilingualism. Based on extensive fieldwork and interviews, it is the first of its kind to portray the inventory of linguistic and accompanying non-linguistic behaviors observed within and between different ethnolinguistic groups in the Siwa Oasis. It provides first-hand information about the linguistic habits of Siwan women, an aspect which is generally difficult to access in this gender-segregated community. The book sheds light on Berber-Arabic contact at the core of the Arab world and at a critical time when individual linguistic repertoires are expanding and Arabic is emerging as a powerful resource.

Speakers of Dyirbal in North Queensland, Australia, have an everyday language style which has been well described. They also have an avoidance style, called Jalnguy, which must be used in the presence of certain ‘tabooed kin’ such as the mother-in-law. Jalnguy has the same grammar and phonology as the everyday style, but the vocabularies are entirely different. Jalnguy has only about one-sixth as many lexemes as the everyday style, with various techniques used to create a Jalnguy correspondent for each everyday style word. The underlying semantic system of Dyirbal is thus realised at two levels of generality and is revealed through detailed study of the correspondences between them. This monograph is the first comprehensive study of this in-law avoidance language, providing fascinating new insights into register variation and the complexities of kinship in Australian languages.

This book presents a pioneering examination of a piece of political oratory delivered in the Grassfields Bantu language of Isu. It engages constructively with the Western biases of the Appraisal framework, developed by Martin & White (2005) to analyse evaluative language and interpersonal positioning, by providing empirical evidence from an African context and adapting it to the cultural values on the ground. As such, it marks a major advance in the theoretical and practical applications of this model while at the same time making a substantial and innovative contribution to the description of an underdescribed African language. The insights gained from this research have the potential to inform future work within this paradigm on non-Indo-European languages and in non-Western settings.

This book broadens the scope of semiotic landscape research by examining souvenir T-shirts as mobile, embodied semiotic landscapes in tourist destinations such as Zanzibar, Spain and Germany. Using Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis, the author analyses how these material objects function within multilayered tourist landscapes, reproducing neocolonial discourses and their traces while also serving as a means of resistance. The study presented in this book focuses on representations of Africa and its people at tourist sites both on and off the continent. It explores how T-shirts become spaces where language, the body and colonial history collide, creating spaces where commodification and empowerment coexist.

Language and place are intimately connected: depending on where we are, what the context is and what our aims are, we will adjust our language accordingly. Yet linguistics defines itself by a framework that determines which kind of language is worth investigating. Within that framework, linguistics constructs both language and place in multiple ways: language as a sequestered thing belongs to the field site or the classroom; language as fluid practice is associated with the street; language as reconstruction belongs to migration corridors. What about the places that tend to fall between the cracks? This volume explores language in strange and familiar places, from Europe to Africa, Amazonia, Australia and the Pacific, in order to shed light on them.
