This selected bibliography is a compilation of the professional literature of children's services librarianship from 1876 to 1976. It explores the evolution of children's work and of the major developments, trends, innovations, and practices that evolved or emerged in children's services. For anyone doing in-depth research on the history of children's work in the American public library, this extensive bibliography is indispensable. It includes both monographs and journal articles and is organized around 10 subject areas, ranging from Historical Focus to Multi-Media. . . . [T]here is an undeniable wealth of material here. BooklistChildren's services has been acclaimed as one of the great contributions of the American public library movement, yet in the early days of American public libraries, children were not even considered to be a part of the library's clientele. However, beginning as early as 1876, library professionals began to speak out in favor of children's library usage and rights, a subject that eventually became the focus of a whole corps of library professionals. Through an analysis of the professional literature of librarianship starting in 1876 and continuing for a hundred-year period to 1976, Fannette H. Thomas has compiled this selected bibliography that explores the evolution of children's work and the major developments, trends, innovations, and practices that evolved or emerged in children's services. The development of the children's service is traced from the days when one shelf of materials for children were culled from the adult collections to the appearance of special children's rooms, reference services, and readers' guidance, and from the pioneers in children's librarianship to today's story hours and multimedia use. This bibliographic exploration of children's services in the American public library encompasses ten chapters including: those devoted to historical focus, professional staff, organizational scheme, philosophical perspective, client group, collection development, readers' services, story hour, interagency cooperation, and multimedia. The volume's entries reflect the plethora of information found in the professional literature about every facet of children's services. Author and subject indexes complete the work. This is a useful resource for college and university libraries where courses in the History of Librarianship, Studies in Public Librarianship, or Children's Services in the Public Library are taught. A unique reference guide, it will simplify the task for researchers, students, and practitioners.

The first comprehensive guide in English to libraries and archives in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg, this book gives humanities and social science researchers easy access to numerous important unexplored collections. The detailed entries fill the void between international directories (which provide minimal information) and country-specific guides in the vernacular (which are largely unknown to U.S. scholars). The thorough descriptions are based on selected on-site visits, direct correspondence with researchers, librarians, and archivists, and bibliographic research about the collections.Part I contains a 90-page, annotated bibliography covering five categories of publications: national bibliographies, union catalogs, biographical dictionaries, directories and guides to collections, and subject guides and bibliographies. Part II provides detailed descriptions of the principal research collections in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The descriptions include basic directory information, profiles and histories, notes on special collections, and details on regulations affecting access. Institutional, subject, and author and title indexes are also provided. This book is an important research tool for national and academic libraries and archives, museums, scholars of social science, and Netherlandic studies, and European Community depository libraries.

This is a catalog of more than 2,300 pre-1900 English-language dictionary titles in the Warren N. and Suzanne B. Cordell Collection of Dictionaries at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. The most comprehensive collection of Western language dictionaries in the world, the Cordell Collection was begun in 1961 by the late Warren N. Cordell, a marketing research executive with a deep love for and appreciation of the study of words. From the beginning, however, old English-language dictionaries formed the core of the Cordell collection, and this catalog documents the comprehensive nature of these holdings. The collection aims at completeness, with every variant copy of interest included. The format of the entries consists of seven basic parts: main entry, title, publication statement, collation, notes, provenance, and references. A subject index is provided for those interested in dictionaries for particular topics.

The Cordell Collection of Dictionaries is the world's largest, with over 5100 pre-1901 titles and several thousand more from the twentieth century. A short-title catalog and a compilation of English-language holdings for the pre-1901 materials have been published previously, but here, for the first time, is an extensive conflated listing which interfiles foreign and English-language materials, and gives access to holdings through a date index, a language index, and a subject guide. Organized alphabetically by author (or by title for main-entry titles), the catalog's arrangement by-date under the main entry offers a sense of publishing history for individual lexicographers. The catalog not only contains exact information on the holdings at Indiana State University, but also provides guidance for the use of sources that may be available in other collections. The Warren N. and Suzanne B. Cordell Collection of Dictionaries, housed at Cunningham Memorial Library, Indiana State University, is the world's largest collection of dictionaries, with over 5100 pre-1901 titles and several thousand more from the twentieth century. A short title catalog and a compflation of English-language holdings for the pre-1901 materials have been published previously, but here, for the first time, is an extensive conflated listing which interfiles foreign and English-language materials, and gives access to holdings through a date index, a language index, and a subject guide. Organized alphabetically by author, editor, or compiler (or by title in the case of main-entry titles), the catalog's arrangement by-date under the main entry offers a sense of publishing history for individual lexicographers. The catalog not only contains exact information on the holdings at Indiana State University, but also provides guidance for the use of sources that may be available in less extensive collections.Aside from obvious utility in the areas of languages, linguistics, and lexicography, the catalog provides valuable information for research in other fields, particularly Western European political history and social anthropology. Designed for researchers and collectors alike, the work has been compressed into a convenient format. As descriptive information on individual titles has been sacrificed for completeness, researchers on English-language dictionaries may also wish to consult English-Language Dictionaries, 1604-1900, cataloged and compiled by Robert Keating O'Neill (Greenwood Press, 1988).

The end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s have been a time of great change for academic libraries and librarians. Entries for nearly 1,700 works are grouped in six topical chapters for ease of use. Each entry includes an informative annotation that summarizes the key points made by the authors, the major findings of research projects, and the names and locations of libraries with innovative programs. Extensive author, article, book/journal title, and subject indexes conclude the work. The volume is a useful tool for locating specific information on various topics, and it is a forecast of the future of academic libraries.

The literature on the Internet and library and information services has emerged since 1990 and has exploded in 1994 and 1995. Though the amount of material on this topic has increased significantly, little has been done to organize this body of literature. This book selects, organizes, reviews, analyzes, and presents books and articles on the Internet and the library published in 1994 and 1995. An introductory essay provides a comprehensive discussion of the most important issues, trends, and challenges faced by library and information professionals as they respond to the Internet in diverse ways. The annotated bibliography that follows contains more than a thousand entries, which are grouped in topical chapters to facilitate use.The emergence of the Internet has had a profound impact on society in general and on library and information services in particular. Libraries in the Arab world are numerous and have a long and distingished history. Today, they serve over 250 million people. To provide good service to this large population and improve other areas of librarianship and information services, the evaluation of library and information services becomes a necessity. This is particularly true in the case of libraries in the Arab world, because locating such materials is not an easy task, given the lack of comprehensive and current bibliographies that cover Arab-related Library and Information Science literature. This bibliography fills this significant gap and provides an indispensable guide for any research in the field with over 1,000 entries covering books, scholarly and professional journal articles, chapters in books, doctoral dissertations, and conference papers. Items included are mainly in Arabic, English, and French; but some German, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, and Italian works are also covered. The bibliography includes author, title, and subject indexes.

Virtual texts have emerged within the realm of the Internet as the predominant means of global communication. As both technological and cultural artifacts, they embody and challenge cultural assumptions and invite new ways of conceptualizing knowledge, community, identity, and meaning. But despite the pervasiveness of the Internet in nearly all aspects of contemporary life, no single resource has cataloged the ways in which numerous disciplines have investigated and critiqued virtual texts. This bibliography includes more than 1500 annotated entries for books, articles, dissertations, and electronic resources on virtual texts published between 1988 and 1999.Because of the multiple contexts in which virtual texts are studied, the bibliography addresses virtual communication across a broad range of disciplines and philosophies. It encompasses studies of the historical development of virtual texts; investigations of the many interdisciplinary applications of virtual texts and discussions of such legal issues as privacy and intellectual property. Entries are arranged alphabetically within topical chapters, and extensive indexes facilitate easy access.

An essential contribution to the study of the history of computers, this work identifies the computer's impact on the physical, biological, cognitive, and medical sciences. References fundamental to the understudied area of the history of scientific computing also document the significant role of the sciences in helping to shape the development of computer technology. More broadly, the many resources on scientific computing help demonstrate how the computer was the most significant scientific instrument of the 20th century. The only guide of its kind covering the use and impact of computers on the the physical, biological, medical, and cognitive sciences, it contains more than 1,000 annotated citations to carefully selected secondary and primary resources. Historians of technology and science will find this a very useful resource. Computer scientists, physicians, biologists, chemists, and geologists will also benefit from this extensive bibliography on the history of computer applications and the sciences.
