Despite the continuing flood of literature on United States national security policy, there is no current general bibliography on the subject. In this work, the compiler has sought to fill that need by bringing together a highly selective listing of valuable works in the field of national security. Although the book begins with the first Eisenhower administration, the emphasis is clearly on the post-1960 era, and in particular the years following American involvement in the wars of Indochina. With its focus on the executive branch, the bibliography provides an effective introduction to the processes for formulating strategies and military policies, and to a number of major defense and security issues.In order to identify the major policy declarations, strategy assessments, and reference works for each administration, Beede has divided the bibliography into chapters that cover presidential administrations. Each of these chapters begins with works concerning the decision makers and decision-making process of the administration, and follows with subject groupings on military and defense policies, particular types of strategies, and American alliances and responses to crises. Special chapters cover reference works, studies that address the entire time period, or that deal with several administrations, and analyses of the Vietnam conflict. The materials listed in the volume include a number of publications from the National Defense University. The book contains comprehensive author and subject indexes. It will be an important reference source for students of military history and presidential policy, as well as a valuable addition to university, research, and military libraries.

This bibliography collects and summarizes published observations, research findings, opinions, and conclusions of mental health professionals, social scientists, and other trained observers regarding the effects of the Vietnam War on those Americans who fought in it. The 851 citations span the years from 1965, when large numbers of U.S. combat troops were first committed in Vietnam, through 1987.The authors have included primarily psychiatric, social, and behavioral science publications. These are augmented with personal narratives of those who served, descriptions by and reactions of war correspondents, and historical reviews of the war and the period, including observations and analyses of the war's effect on the combat soldier. Although selections were limited to materials in generally accessible sources--periodicals, journals, books, monographs, and government reports--articles from the popular press were included if they were written by behavioral science professionals or firsthand observations from Vietnam of an especially insightful nature. The volume is arranged topically and is divided into three major parts: service in Vietnam, veteran adaptation, and social and institutional context. Of particular value are the abstracts that succinctly highlight each publication's critical findings, observations, and opinions. From these, the reader can easily survey the psychosocial impact of the war through the panorama of professional study and interpretation. This work is designed as a reference tool for researchers investigating the what, when, and why of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The book provides, for the first time, a cross-referencing and indexing of the total record of testimony and evidence that was compiled and published by the U.S. Congress following U.S. investigations into the Pearl Harbor attack. This is the first English-language general bibliography on military fortifications. It deals with the history of fortifications from the earliest times to the present throughout the world. Design, construction, and maintenance of all types of fortifications are noted, from permanent to temporary, from earthworks to fortifications of wood and stone. Although the work mainly cites English-language sources, numerous useful foreign-language publications are noted as well. Materials included range from books and pamphlets to essays, periodicals, book chapters, dissertations, and videos.After the frontmatter, which provides an overview of the subject, the volume consists of six major sections: general works are cited first, followed by chapters on fortifications in the Eastern Hemisphere, Europe, the Pacific, the Western Hemisphere, and specific topics. During the course of the Civil War, Northern daily newspapers printed over 2,000 separate maps depicting campaigns and military operations. Although they are important primary documents, these maps have been largely overlooked by historians and enthusiasts because of the difficulty in locating them. This cartobibliography is the first finding aid to the war's journalistic cartography. The book lists all known Civil War maps published in eighteen daily newspapers in Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, New York, Philadelphia, and St. Louis. Entries consist of map title, scale, dimensions, author (when known), engraver (when known), and notes on sources of information and geographic coverage. Maps are grouped by newspapers, which are arranged alphabetically, and listed chronologically under each newspaper. A thorough geographic, subject, and personal name index provides access to the entries.

As Mickolus once more demonstrates, terrorism is alive and well at the beginning of the 1990s. This volume combines a chronology of terrorism, (the fourth Mickolus has produced), with a selective bibliography on the topic, (his third).
