Charles James Fox, the standard bearer of the reform Whig opposition in the late eighteenth century, was among the most colorful politicians of his era and perhaps its most arresting orator. Despite a career marked by shifting alliances and misadventures, Fox had a great impact on the development of nineteenth-century British political thinking, and such major prime ministers as Melbourne, Grey, and Russell looked, in part, to Fox's principles on liberty to guide their own actions. Today Fox is best remembered for his advocacy of the Libel Bill, a milestone in the history of English law; for his support of Catholic emancipation and the abolition of slavery, measures that became law after his death; and for his dedication to the rights of the common man. This volume is the first comprehensive bibliography of Fox, the man of the people, and it provides an annotated guide to the manuscript and archival sources as well as his own writings and the extensive literature on his life and career. The volume begins with an analysis of Fox's life and impact and is followed by a chronology of major events in his career. The volume concludes with author and subject indexes. The bibliography is an essential reference tool for scholars and researchers investigating late eighteenth and early nineteenth British political and social history.

George Nathaniel Curzon, first Marquis Curzon of Kedleston was, perhaps, the most important British statesman of the modern era not to become prime minister. A statesman, historian, and traveler, Curzon was seen as a political figure who achieved successes rather than success. After achieving distinctions at Eton and Oxford, Curzon became private secretary to the new prime minister Lord Salisbury in 1885. In 1886 he was elected to the House of Commons. Posts as under secretary at the India Office and under secretary for foreign affairs followed; at the same time he was in great demand as a writer, providing accounts of his travels and his political views. In 1898 he became Viceroy of India. After serving as chancellor of Oxford University, he entered Lloyd George's War Cabinet, and, in 1919, was appointed foreign secretary. A Tory reformer and spokesman for Britain's imperial mission, today Curzon may be best remembered for extending Western knowledge of Indian art, archeology, and literature. This is the first book-length bibliography ever published on Lord Curzon. It examines his private and official papers as well as his writings and the numerous publications and other materials dealing with him and his family. In addition, the volume contains a sketch of his life and career, a chronology, and author, subject, and serial publications indexes. This is a invaluable resource for scholars and researchers on British imperialism, foreign affairs, and politics.

Cornish provides the basis for a reassessment of George Grenville. The work begins with an extensive introductory essay that interprets Grenville's background, political career, and contribution to the development of eighteenth-century British politics. Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-1891) wrote remarkably little about himself, but he has attracted the attention of many writers, politicians, and scholars, both during his lifetime and ever since. His controversial and provocative role in Irish and British affairs had him vilified as a murderer in The Times, and afterwards dramatically vindicated by the Westminster Parliament. It cast him as a romantic hero to the young James Joyce, and a self-serving opportunist to the journalists of the Nation. Parnell has been the subject of court cases, parliamentary enquiries and debates, journalism, plays, poems, literary analysis and historical studies. For the first time all these have been collected, catalogued and cross-referenced in one volume, an invaluable resource for scholars of late nineteenth century Ireland and Britain.Divided into fifteen chapters, including a biographical sketch, the volume contains information on manuscript and archival collections, printed primary sources, Parnell's writing, Parnell's speeches in the House of Commons and outside Parliament, contemporary journalism, contemporary writing, and contemporary illustrations on Irish affairs, and a substantial list of scholarly work, including biographies, books, articles, chapters, and theses. This volume offers readers a clear record of the substantial material already available on Parnell, and in doing so offers resources to future research in this area.

The work begins with a short biography of Pitt and a chronology of his life, and then provides exhaustive coverage of both primary and secondary sources. Chapters include a survey of manuscript sources, coverage of relevant newspaper articles, historiographical materials, and an extensive compendium of historical and biographical works on Pitt, his achievements, and his place in history. Although he held only minor offices in Parliament, politician and political writer Edmund Burke strongly affected contemporary opinion, and his ideas had a profound impact on the future. He supported the American colonists in their quarrel with Britain, played a conspicuous part in the impeachment of Warren Hastings for alleged misgovernment in India, and advocated religious toleration, the abolition of the slave trade, and other reforms. A bibliography of his life and career, the book includes a biographical essay and chronology, and provides a complete list of Burke's writings, as well as books and articles about him up to the present. Important contemporary portraits and cartoons and comments of his contemporaries add to this volume. The book's opening essay describes the life of Edmund Burke, showing how his writings and actions related to the main issues of the time, where the chronology lists events important to this situation. Section one, Manuscript and Archival Resources, sites the location of relevant collections, indicates those of greatest importance, and lists both guides to collections and contemporary periodicals. Bibliographies, biographies, and studies of Burke's political thought appear in the second section, while the tertiary section covers Burke's own writings. Contemporaries of Burke are covered in section four. His political background is examined in the fifth section, and the following chapters cover places associated with Burke, his speeches, contemporary portraits and caricatures, periodicals, and his life and career.
