Michael Martone, whose trademark is the blurring of the lines between fact and fiction, has created an Indiana that almost is, a landscape marked by Lover's Lane-franchises and pharmaceutical drug theme parks. Passages from this book have been published in Indiana newspapers as feature articles on what to do this weekend or as suggestions for family vacations. Tourists have been directed to visit the Trans-Indiana Mayonnaise Pipeline and the Field of Lightbulbs. They have been told about Our Lady of the Big Hair and Feet and taught the history of the License Plate Insurrection of 1979. The book opens with a letter from the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana, inviting visitors to sample ""refreshing paw paw canapes and free glasses of buttermilk cider drawn from our state's native bison herds"" at state rest areas, and to considering working toward a Ph.D. within the state's picturesque borders. The book closes with a chilling Author's Note that epitomizes Martone's work: It is untrue but nearly believable; and it renders the mundane horrific and the tragic hilarious. The Blue Guide to Indiana is an extension of Martone's previous work, in which he often composed fake essays in the voices of real celebrities. Like Jorge Luis Borges and Flann O'Brien, Martone uses parody to reveal the deeper truths about our culture.

Blue Guides: Complete Cultural Guides -- This guide amply covers mainland Greece, the cradle of western civilisation. Updated information on developments in archaeology and scholarship make this the essential guide for visitors to Greece who are genuinely interested in its past as a way of enjoying the present. This book aims above all to be a handbook and reference book to the Classical world, making that world visible and comprehensible to new generations of readers. This edition pays more attention to practical information, on the hypothesis that a good lunch and a comfortable bed are all part of the cultural experience. Illustrations to inform rather than to decorate: maps, diagrams, floor plans, architectural details and photographs -- "Often plagiarised by other guide writers, Blue Guides have always been a gold standard for accuracy and depth" Daily Telegraph. "Guide books in the grand tradition of thoroughness and objectivity" Georgia Review.

Blue Guides: Complete Cultural Guides -- The Southwest of France is a key destination for long leisurely stays or weekend breaks. Delia Gray-Durant, an art historian who has lived and worked in the region, knows this landscape of contrasts intimately. Mountains, rivers, rolling hills, pine forests, and the Atlantic coast have determined the spectacular range of food and drink on offer. Its artistic, architectural and historic inheritance is equally wide-ranging: caves decorated by prehistoric man; superb Romanesque pilgrimage churches and forbidding Gothic ones; grand 18th-century and cityscapes; eclectic seaside architecture; and rich art collections including a museum dedicated to Toulouse-Lautrec.

Tillfälligt slut
The 21st century commuter is a tragic hero. Long-suffering, long-journeying and subject to lengthy delays, he survives through an iron will and by burying his head in a freesheet. Chris Moss's Smoothly from Harrow takes its title from John Betjeman, the bard of Metro-land, but brings the world of the London commuter up to date with facts and fictions, poems and propaganda, statistics and self-help advice. Did you know that John le Carre, Mrs Beeton and Henry VIII were commuters? Did you know Waterloo station 'processes' more than 94 million passengers a year? Did you know that you are not just a number, but a modern-day, latte-drinking flaneur - London's key witness, greatest survivor and chief psychogeographer? This compendium will help you get through the dawns and dusks of your eternal, everyday, Herculean trial: to get to work and back.
