Addiction among women continues to be a vexing social problem with no clear solution. Individuals, families, and social organizations use various approaches to end addiction, ranging from social isolation and family enmeshment to formal detox programs, but results remain uneven. In this study of the recovery careers of female addicts living in rural settings, Judith Grant explores the ways in which twenty-five addicts engage in individual processes of self-recovery. Using feminist methods of inquiry and a Meadian theoretical framework of analysis, Grant follows the women through three distinct recovery phases as they slowly come to shift their understandings of themselves, others, and their social objects. Central to a recovery lies a process through which women reinvent themselves by altering their involvement with themselves, their partners, friends, and children, and of course their addictive substance. This book offers concrete solutions for policy makers and provides a refreshing measure of hope for the largely invisible population of individuals, both family members and addicts, who suffer terribly from this disease.

This book seeks to address a significant void in the scholarship on policing Native American communities. It is the first book to explore Native Americans' perspectives on the ways in which Native American communities—especially those in and around reservations—are both over–and underpoliced in ways that perpetuate both the criminalization and the victimization of Native Americans as nations and as individuals. Drawing upon a series of interviews conducted with 278 Native Americans from seven states, Policing Race and Place in Indian Country uncovers patterns of hate crime against Native Americans as well as a general dissatisfaction with the nature of law enforcement in their communities. Participants reported activities ranging from willful blindness to Native American victimization at one extreme, to overt forms of police harassment and violence at the other. What emerges from these descriptions is the recognition that the patterns observed by the participants of the study are an extension of a lengthy history of systemic racism against Native Americans. Policing Race and Place in Indian Country is one of the first books to address the policing of Native American communities. While there are several studies that investigate the racialized nature and context of policing, most only refer to Native Americans in passing. By focusing solely on the Native American community, the book is appealing to scholars writing on race and policing or criminal justice.

Readers of criminological literature are presented with little more than thumbnail sketches as to the social characteristics or motivations of the authors. One learns their status, institutional location, and supposed credentials. Rarely are we presented with more detailed impressions of the authors as a combination of positivist assumptions and notions of professional competence seemingly render such information unimportant. However, increasing numbers of critical scholars are becoming aware of authorship as an issue; it matters who is addressing us. By taking these authors out of their methodological framework, Critical Voices in Criminology provides an opportunity for figures in and around critical criminology to discuss their own intellectual journeys into and within the discipline. The book offers the opportunity for contributors to reflect on their work and consider what they did not say. It also affords them the opportunity to describe their own 'channeling processes' by indicating how the pursuance of some themes/topics 'seemed' appropriate, sensible, or realistic, while others appeared less so, whether they internalized these particular themes, or attempted to contest and/or replace them.
