NORAD and the Soviet Nuclear Threat is the history of the air defence of Canada during the Cold War era. The reader is taken into the Top Secret world of NORAD, the joint Canadian-American North American Air Defence network. Ride along with the aircrew in their cockpit as they fight an electronic joust in the skies. Go deep underground to the Command Centre as the Air Weapons controllers plot the air war on their radar screens. Visit the radar sites deep in the Canadian bush as they struggle to provide the radar data for an electronic air battle happening overhead. An actual NORAD exercise on 10 May 1973, called Amalgam Mute, is used as an example. This exercise tested that NORAD was honouring its motto: Deter, Detect, Destroy, and was protecting North America from aerial threat. There is an extensive explanation of the aircraft, squadrons, weapons, radar, and radar sites involved. Included are two personal accounts of the first interception of a Soviet "Bear" bomber off the coast of Canada, and the first Canadian fighter interceptor pilot to win the coveted United States Air Force "Top Gun" award.

A jarring portrait of a deeply unequal Canada and how a Wealth Tax could rein in the destructive power wielded by today’s billionaires. In recent years, a tiny wealthy elite has pulled far ahead of all other Canadians. Amassing wealth at a faster pace than ever before — even faster than their U.S. counterparts — Canada’s billionaires are siphoning off for themselves an ever-larger share of the nation’s wealth, at the expense of the rest of us.Furthermore, they are part of a new global elite that dominates the world to a degree unimaginable even a decade ago. The super-rich have always commanded the lion’s share of resources, but they are now also driving us towards climate catastrophe, with the power to determine whether the Earth will even remain habitable. The best hope for stopping this train wreck and distributing resources more widely is a Wealth Tax, aimed exclusively at the super-rich. Polls show it’s wildly popular with Canadians. Billionaires have managed to keep it off the political agenda so far, but the authors argue now is the time for change.

Behind every great constitutional case, there is a person with a fascinating story. The Supreme Court decides some of the biggest issues in Canadian society: Do Canadians have the right to assisted suicide? Can the government outlaw sex work? Behind every one of these cases are heroes, villains, crusaders, or passengers. We admire heroes and we disdain villains for their views or for things they have done. Whether someone is a hero or a villain is all a matter of perspective. Some are crusaders, people who campaign for a cause and set out to change other people’s views and make broader social change. Terri-Lynn Bedford was a crusader for the rights of sex workers and Harry Daniels was a crusader for Métis rights. Most of the people behind the biggest legal decisions are not crusaders, they weren’t trying to champion a cause, they were just trying to achieve a narrow result that ended up being much bigger than themselves. They were along for the ride — often a long and convoluted one — in the Canadian justice system.

How does the Canadian government handle information about UFOs? Veteran UFO researcher Chris Rutkowski reveals all.Polls show that millions of Canadians believe they’ve seen a UFO. Are these strange phenomena alien visitors? Meteors? Advanced foreign technology?Chris Rutkowski has been researching Canadian UFO reports since the 1970s and has gained an unparalleled understanding of how UFO reports are handled by government agencies. While the Canadian government and military establishment have taken UFO reports very seriously, they were unsure of how to manage them and looked to Rutkowski and other Canadian researchers for advice. With a public hungry for official UFO details and politicians asking the prime minister pointed questions about UFO reports, it’s clear that UFO sightings matter more than they ever have before, and Canadian researchers have become integral to international UFO studies. In Canada’s UFO Secrets, Rutkowski reflects on decades of investigation, tracing the development of Canadian UFO policy and detailing remarkable sightings, including cases never before revealed to the public.

Your cultural influences affect your body and choices in profound and unexpected ways.Beyond Biology introduces the variety of ways that culture can influence us, which can be more obscure and deeper than mere differences in food, language, and customs. Did you know that culture can explain why there are differing rates of multiple sclerosis around the world? Or why Mandarin speakers tend to have higher rates of perfect pitch? Or why Italians avoid milk in their coffee after their morning cup?Culture influences us in profound ways that are sometimes obvious, like our language and food, but are sometimes not readily apparent, like the shape of our feet and eyes, whom we find attractive, and even our DNA.Drawing from the latest research in the field of cultural psychology, Beyond Biology is a compelling introduction to how people have evolved to become a deeply cultural species. The insights reveal what it means to be a person deeply influenced by your culture.
