This is volume II of the first scholarly edition of the Golden Legend, the largest and most elaborate production of the first printer in English, William Caxton. It is an English translation of Jacobus de Voragine's Legenda aurea (ca. 1267), a collection of legends for the feasts of saints (the Sanctorale) and other major days of the liturgical year (the Temporale). The Legenda aurea was one of the most popular and influential books in the later medieval Western world; it circulated widely, and was repeatedly translated into many vernacular languages. This second volume contains Caxton's most notable addition: a series of Old Testament legends, from Adam to Judith; it contains its own explanatory notes, glossary, and Index of Proper Names. It reproduces Caxton's original text with modern punctuation and capitalization, notes on content, syntax and lexis, a detailed glossary and an index of proper names. The notes provide detailed support for the view that Caxton's text is largely based on the work of an earlier unknown writer in English. They also demonstrate that writer's strikingly independent handling of a variety of sources, including the Latin Vulgate Bible, the Historia scholastica, the French Bible historiale, and the English Cursor mundi and the Wycliffite translation of the Bible.

The Wycliffite Old Testament Lectionary contains English translations of those parts of the Old Testament which were used as readings at Mass. Extant in thirty-nine manuscripts and fragments, the Lectionary presents a liturgically organised set of readings, based on the Latin readings of the Use of Sarum. Most of these translations derive from the books of the Old Testament in the Wycliffite Bible (using both the Early Version and the Late Version). In addition, however, the Old Testament Lectionary also contains readings which were translated from the Sarum Missal independently, and which show striking differences to the early and late Wycliffite versions. The Old Testament Lectionary is therefore vitally important in understanding the textual tradition of the Wycliffite Bible as well as the organisation, methods, and motivation behind this major fourteenth-century scholarly translation project. The Old Testament Lectionary is not just a collection of extracts from the Bible but a continuous structured text. In the manuscripts, the readings are presented in the order of the liturgical year with rubrics, running titles indicating liturgical seasons, and a sophisticated system of cross-references for readings used on more than one liturgical occasion. This volume presents the first full edition of the Wycliffite Old Testament Lectionary, together with an introduction containing a complete list and description of all extant manuscripts (surviving from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries). The edition also contains a detailed analysis of textual and contextual features of the Old Testament Lectionary and its sources.

This is the second edition of a major work by the translator and hagiographer Osbern Bokenham. Unknown before the discovery of the unique manuscript in 2005, Bokenham's work comprises a complete translation of Legenda Aurea, a collection of saints' lives compiled by the Dominican friar Jacobus de Voragine which achieved widespread popularity throughout the Middle Ages and survives in over eight hundred manuscripts, supplemented with accounts of the lives of various British saints, including those of Cedde, Felix, Edward, and Oswald. Writing in the fifteenth century, Bokenham's work, which combines prose and verse, was influenced by major writers such as Chaucer and Lydgate, both in its content and in its verse forms and style, and thus sheds new light on their fifteenth-century reputation. Bokenham's work is also important for his naming of the patrons for whom he translated a number of these saints' lives, allowing scholars to trace networks of patronage amongst prominent members of the gentry and nobility in fifteenth-century East Anglia.
