This book addresses what teachers and school leaders from a dozen countries see as the social and emotional strengths, interests and needs of adolescents in their schools and communities; how they innovate their programs and practices to respond to their students’ lives. The book also describes how educators themselves benefit from social and emotional supports to be responsive. Rather than assume that there are universal themes in adolescents’ lives, the book is intended to illuminate the local, contextual, and powerful insights of educators daily working with students. In many intentional respects, each serves as an action research study with an effort to better the process and outcomes of their students’ growth and learning as well as to enrich the classroom. The chapters are organized by themes, ranging from challenges adolescents face in that particular locale to curriculum work that is project-based, transdisciplinary, and tied to the communities where the adolescents live. ‘The voices of adolescents, particularly with regard to their social and emotional development have been neglected in the literature. This book offers a new approach to workforce education for youth. It provides meaningful and essential insight into educational systems and practices through cases of vocational and technical education in the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of Italy, and the United States of America. The cases describe the history of the multi-faceted vocational systems and provide, in doing so, a springboard for this new work. A conceptual framework comprised of the cognitive, psychological, and social building blocks of individual development explains the multifaceted dimensions of youth that contribute to the policies and practices of traditional adolescent educational models. The framework extends that base by drawing on a multidisciplinary collection of research from both sociology and business to create a new transdisciplinary model for educational practice. It highlights the important but often under-studied relationship between educational institutions and workplaces. The bookculminates in an original model, Community Works, which advances both formal and non-formal educational programming and curricula. The model details a practical program for youth, including roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders, and a curricular map, information on lesson planning, varieties of instructional strategies, and tools for assessment and evaluation for professionals.

Multilingual learners (MLs) students spend most of their school time with their teachers, who often feel professionally unprepared to meet their linguistically diverse students' needs. As such, preparing teachers for increasing numbers of multilingual learners (MLs) has become a critical factor in promoting equity and success for all students in our global society. This book explores and highlights the reflective narratives of teacher educators, in-service, and preservice teachers. It shows how these narratives are grounded in their personal lives, professional training, and daily teaching, and how they can unfold the complexities in their various experiences and the rich implications for MLs teaching and teacher preparation. The book presents papers that utilize teachers' reflective narratives to prepare and train teachers who are or will be working with MLs. Through this book, the author examines the role of music education within the larger global education movement. Specifically, the author argues music education has unique potential to foster positive global identity and to promote higher levels of intercultural sensitivity during adolescence.Music educators can use the framework in this book to craft lessons that will help their adolescent students develop positive global identities as they progress towards higher levels of intercultural sensitivity within the context of musical learning experiences. The book also offers a framework that can help practicing and pre-service music educators to engage in the type of cultural and musical self-reflection needed to resist deeply engrained hegemonic tendencies.
