Henry Wemyss Feilden, an army officer, was chosen as one of two naturalists on board HMS Alert. Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés' account of the second and third Spanish Expeditions to the Moluccas.Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés (1478-1557), warden of the fortress and port of Santo Domingo on the Island of Hispaniola, also served his Emperor, Charles V, as the official chronicler of the first half-century of the Spanish presence in the New World. Book XX, published in 1557, concerns the first three Spanish voyages to the East Indies. Only the first four chapters deal with Magellan's voyage, the remaining thirty-one detail two subsequent expeditions to the Moluccas, 1525-35, the first initially led by García Jofre de and Loaysa. The narrative offers many details of the hardships and conflict with the Portuguese endured by the Spanish. There is also much information about indigenous culture, commerce, geography and the fauna and flora of the Spice Islands.

John Martin (1789-1869) was a London-based, Edinburgh-educated physician interested in anthropological matters. This comprehensive account of Tongan Society is his only book. He was inspired to write it by a chance encounter with its subject, William Mariner (1791-1853) who spent four years (1806-1810) in Tonga, in the South Pacific, at a time before any substantial European influence disturbed or modified that society. Mariner, an extraordinarily mature and perceptive youth, became thoroughly imbued with Tongan language and culture as the adopted son of the most powerful chief in Tonga. Martin’s intelligent engagement with Mariner resulted in a compelling narrative and a comprehensive account of Tongan society which, together with the accompanying grammar and vocabulary, became a classic. Often celebrated as an extraordinary real-life adventure story, it is a pioneering work of anthropology, and for 200 years it has been a primary and authoritative source for research into Tongan history and culture.

This bibliography concerns the ten works written by or produced with the involvement of Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616) between 1580 and 1588, describing each book and its history with as much primary and secondary documentation as possible. The introduction gives a brief notice of Hakluyt's life and career, followed by an outline of the bibliography's scope and conventions. The detailed bibliography enables us to trace not only the composition and material form of these writings and their reception, but also Hakluyt's developing interests, his intellectual debts and milieu, the books and other sources available to him, and his patrons and career from his time at Oxford until the imminent publication of the original edition of the Principall Navigations, his celebrated collection of voyages and travels, in 1589. While partly an exercise in documentation, identifying sources and references as a guide to research, it goes further in attempting a study of Hakluyt's books drawing on the various approaches to bibliography, taking these into the allied field of 'the history of the book'.
