The French philosophe Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu (1689-1755) was a political and social thinker of enormous depth, range, originality, and influence. Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) was hailed by Claude Lévi-Strauss as "the founder of the sciences of man". Kant casts a long shadow over contemporary debates in political philosophy. The Kantian roots of ideas of dignity, autonomy, equality and freedom under law are widely acknowledged.
