The honour of Mowbray, which was created by King Henry I for Nigel d'Aubigny, was one of the greatest feudal estates of the Anglo-Norman kingdom, with territories in ten English counties and in Normandy. The 400 collected charters of the first three generations of the Mowbray family provide abundant material for a study of the feudal structure, economy, and administration of the honour between 1107 and 1191. The introduction to the collection examines such topics as the pattern of enfeoffment and ecclesiastical endowment, the management of the demesne, the process of colonization, and the organization of the household.

The English estates of the Abbey of Holy Trinity, Caen included manors situated in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, East Anglia, and Wiltshire, which differed greatly in economic organisation and social structure. Among the records of estate administration are surveys describing the rents and services of tenants, the resources of the demesne, and the advance of cultivation in woodland and waste. The present volume contains surveys for the whole estate made in the reigns of Henry I and Henry II, thirteenth century custumals for Minchinhampton, Avening, and Felsted, and twenty-six charters and leases, some of which relate to property in London. They provide valuable evidence of social conditions and changing methods of estate exploitation, and are printed for the first time.

Lynn was a 'new' port of the late eleventh century, founded on the estates of the Bishop of Norwich. This volume includes transcripts or summaries of most of the documents available in original charters, cartularies, rentals, bede-rolls and the administrative records of the borough, for a study of the origin and topography of the town, and this is discussed and interpreted in the introduction. The scope of the volume also extends to evidence available for the religious, social and economic life of the town. It draws on gild statutes, poll-tax lists, customs accounts and toll lists, the court-rolls of the Bishop's liberty and a town-clerk's memorandum book. The introduction discusses the nature and extent of these courses and provides a brief analysis of most aspects of the medieval town.
