At the height of its imperialist phase, the United States of America gained control of the Philippines at the beginning of the 20th century. Following American troops and government employees into the new American territory were Protestant missionaries, who had until then been systematically excluded from Spain’s Asian colony. This book examines the mission and church work of Filipino and American Episcopalians in northern Luzon during the years of American rule. It shows how in the early decades of the mission two contradictory emphases, one on civilizing the Filipino and the other on translating the Christian message into the vernacular, worked themselves out in the lives of missionaries and local people. The work then goes on to look at how both local Christians and missionaries, in their own ways, utilized Christianity to deal with new political, economic and social realities as these emerged in the second two decades of American rule.

Two of the most intense movements for political secession from India had been staged in the two «tribal» states of Northeast India, namely Nagaland and Mizoram. Because the two states record the country’s highest percentage of Christian populations, Christian missions in the Northeast have been suspected and accused of having played clandestine roles. This book challenges this presumptuous allegation, and proposes that the root of the ethno-political movements must be sought in the identity-formation process of the people. The Northeast tribals’ resentment to the depressing political identity imposed on them and their resistance to the threat of domination are identified as the immediate factors for the ethnopolitical revolutions. The development of Christianity in Mizoram is selected as the focus of the study. The study discloses that the Mizo Christian experience of ecstatic revivals uniquely interlaced Christianity with the people’s cultural identity, engendering the spirit of Mizo ethnonationalism. The emergent people’s strong sense of identity resisted the threat of cultural domination and political assimilation by the Indic India.

This book explores the first encounter in the mid-fifteenth century between Western Europe and the West African Coast, arguing that it did not produce hostility, but rather a climate of beneficial mutual exchange. It examines West African pre-colonial social history and asserts that around the year 1500 West Africa became a safe haven for those fleeing political or religious persecution in Europe. Among them were mercantile settlers, Tangomãos or Lançados, known to have arrived on the West African Coast after the Portuguese explorers in 1446. They exchanged commodities, culture, religious ideas and practices with West African people. These events raise searching questions on the nature of identity and space.

This book is a constructive contribution to a Christian spirituality for the late modern religiously plural society. Based on a description of contemporary religion, in which the author refers to modern sociologists (some general and some specifically involved with religion), this study outlines certain recent characteristics of our contemporary way of relating to religion, and formulates a spirituality for the late modern religiously plural society. It detects such spirituality arising within three dynamic fields: ‘continuity and internal diversity’, ‘formal and informal structures’ and ‘vita activa and vita contemplativa’. Against this background the author presents and analyses a case study of Aloysius Pieris, a Christian theologian active in ‘Buddhist’ Sri Lanka, and of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk active in ‘Christian’ France. Based on identified presuppositions and in dialogue with these two personalities the book proceeds towards a construction which contains some basic indicators of a Christian spirituality for the late modern religiously plural society. The concepts ‘community’, ‘baptism’ and ‘grace and concern’ are central to the construction.

The Budapest Scottish Mission with its twofold aim, mission to the Jews and initiating an Evangelical revival in the largest Protestant body had played a remarkable, decisive and unique role in the «long 19th century» of the Hungarian Kingdom. This study focuses on how the Scottish Mission implanted British Evangelicalism, German Pietism, voluntary organisations such as YMCA, IFES, WSCF, Sunday School, Women’s Guild, social outreach, medical missions, home mission, personal piety, concepts of mission and evangelisation through their Scottish Presbyterianism into Hungary. The study presents the interaction of Scottish Presbyterians, Orthodox, Neolog (Reform and Conservative) and Status Quo Ante Jews of Hungary, and the Hungarian Reformed Protestants. It also discusses their attitudes to conversion, mission, proselytising, education, assimilation, and nationalism. While discussing the Mission’s aims, the book pays careful attention to church, institutional, and religious histories. In addition to these, local theologies, ideologies and worldviews of the people are scrutinized. Through these issues this study introduces the reader to the daily life of a multicultural community gathered around the Scottish community.

The denominational plurality in continental Europe keeps growing. The churches of African origin are of increasing number. Seeking for a new identity in their new home, the concept of Diaspora and the question for legal issues get important for their identity. To what extent is their identity determined rather by seclusion or openness? Are the churches missionizing amongst Germans and are there ecumenical relations? The study describes and analyses the history of mission studies and mission activities at Utrecht University (UU), from the establishment of UU in 1636 onwards. It also describes and examines the overseas ministries of Dutch, German, Hungarian, South African, and other alumni in the past 375 years. Why do people join new congregations? How does this happen? And which consequences does this have for peoples belief and behavior? These are the main questions addressed in this comparative case study from the distinctively different contexts of Norway and Thailand. While joining a new congregation in Thailand in most cases is understood in terms of conversion, what happens in the Norwegian context is mainly referred to as a process of revitalized commitment. However, common in both contexts was that joining a new congregation implied an aspect of religious change. In order to understand this change, the author applies perspectives from contemporal conversion studies, such as Lewis R. Rambos typology of conversion, and from anthropological studies of change.

This book assesses the conceptualisation of international mission in the Methodist Church Ghana. It demonstrates that Ghanaian Methodists possess a robust ecclesiology with roots in the Akan concept of «abusua» and an evangelical theology rooted in John Wesley. This publication investigates new ways of understanding international churches. Based upon recent fieldwork, six migrant Christian communities in Rotterdam were analysed using congregational study methods on how they construct identity. Through the frames of ‘koinonia’, ‘diakonia’ and ‘kerygma’, this research reflects on their composition, characteristics, leadership style, language and social capital. Language is found to be an important shaper or ‘carrier’ of identity and acts both as badge and bridge of identity. In building identity, MCCs do not behave in ways expected or consistent with the process of integration.

This volume focuses on ‘Doing and Negotiating Intercultural Theology’. Specifically, it introduces a ‘third way’ of practising intercultural theology, which goes beyond two previous approaches: Firstly, until now, the term ‘intercultural theology’ has referred to a theological subject or discipline. Secondly, it characterised a certain cross-disciplinary dimension of theological reflection. As a ‘third way’, beyond these sub-concepts, ICT is broadened, critically reflected upon and explored in depth by everyone involved in interdisciplinary theological studies, including lecturers, students, researchers and readers. This is in reference to global religious and academic exchange processes.The ten chapters of the volumes therefore offer specific access to the concept of intercultural theology. If diakonia continues to be defined as servanthood, it risks objectifying people, excluding them from being subjects of mission, failing to learn from others, and mystifying the power of domination. Since diakonia has been essential to the mission of the church from its early days, its interpretation significantly influences the church’s self-understanding, current mission and relationships with others. Decolonizing Diakonia explores these issues by examining the Bible, historical developments, theology of service, and Katherine B. Hockin’s companionship. This book discovers new language, images, and practices for diakonia that align with postcolonial contexts, emphasizing just, respectful, and compassionate relationships among those participating in God’s mission today. Hockin’s concept of diakonia as companionship is a fitting idea and practice for our mission. Her notion of companionship is inclusive, allowing everyone to participate in God’s mission as equals regardless of their status or privilege within society’s power structures. This companionship transforms the power dynamics from being for others into with each other. There is a plethora of Christological initiatives to creatively and firmly root Christianity in Africa without either Christianity compromising its prophetic vocation or the healthy cultural values of the people being destroyed. From the backdrop of the African religio-cultural scenario and the patrimony of the Church these Christological models seek to address the question, «but you, who do you say that I am?» (Mt16:15). It is a Christological question which underlines the need for a relevant theology which arises from and is accountable to the people.The African cult of the ancestors epitomizes the African quest for salvation (soteriology), goodness in the society (ethics), relationship with one another (community), union with God (spirituality), and the end of the human person (anthropology and eschatology). These African values are perfectly fulfilled in Christ. This work singles out the African ancestral Christological model with its paschal and ecclesiological dimensions to demonstrate, that even though no human term can exhaust the mystery of Jesus Christ, the ancestorship of Christ as perfect and analogical model opens up a mutually enriching dialogical encounter between Christianity and the African culture. Through the analysis and application of the Christological conciliar definitions of the Church from the council of Nicea to Chalcedon, this African confession of Christ as the ancestor is weighed on the balance of the classical Christological orthodoxy.

The aim of this study is to demonstrate intrinsic power structures in language patterns of contemporary Christian mission theories. Bringing in questions and concerns raised by postcolonial theory and critical discourse analysis, the study explores the structuralist ideologies behind modern epistemology and – it is maintained – the associated «modern» language patterns. Based on discourse analyses of language and terminology employed by a number of significant contemporary mission theorists the author in conclusion points towards a widespread use of ‘power language’ within the modern mission movement. Eventually the study moves from critical analysis into theological construction suggesting a mission theory based on postmodern assumptions, both reconciled with religious diversity through ‘paralogies’ (Jean-François Lyotard) and acknowledging the unavoidable relativity of any theological claim.

The first chapter of this book deals with the history of Christian mission activity in Western Kenya and points out the particularities of the missionaries as well as the mission churches. Within this context, the history of the African Independent Churches (AICs) is placed, which appear as a mergence of various traditions and motivations: the pursuit of independence from the colonial power and the mission churches connected with it, the preservation of traditional African religiousness and the absorption of Pentecostal piety with its heavy emphasis on the gifts of the spirit. In the following chapters the stance of AICs towards involvement in political debates is explored and discussed. This is done on the basis of semi-structured interviews with local leaders as well as bishops and representatives of church networks. Another topic is the contribution of AICs to the inculturation of the Christian faith in the African context – especially in view of the academic African Theology and the Pentecostal Churches. The last part of the book deals with the question of the future of the AICs and their ecumenical relations – this is done in the context of the rapid expansion Neo-Pentecostal groups and movements.

The massive changes of Christianity during the 20th century raise the perennial question about its identity in a new, radical form. The author addresses the question of identity and asks how globalisation, religious pluralism, and the polycentric nature of Christianity affect Christian self-identification and theological reflection. First, religious life and theological reflection among believers in Jesus from Muslim and Hindu background in South Asia is presented in two empirical studies. Secondly, the findings are analysed and interpreted within a broad theoretical framework, drawing on models for syncretistic processes from history of religions, cultural anthropology, and Christian theology. Finally, the study concludes with a systematic-theological perspective on the interreligious hermeneutics underlying the changes of Christianity and discusses how interreligious hermeneutics might inform missiology as well as Christian theologies of religions and how this might challenge our understanding of the church’s nature and mission. In conclusion, it is argued that a global, polycentric Christianity can be interpreted as fellowship created by the Spirit and centred on Christ.

This volume is a collection of historical essays, describing and analyzing the link between Christian mission and education in modern China, Japan, and Korea. The authors come from China, Japan, Korea, Canada, the United States of America, and the Netherlands. The twelve essays are a selection from the papers given at the Sixth International Conference of the North East Asia Council of Studies of History of Christianity (NEACSHC), held in Seoul in 2007. The nine appendices of the volume offer basic information on both the previous conferences of this council and its constitution. After three Western essays, mainly dealing with the impact of Western educational mission on Asia and the secularization of Christian higher education, the volume offers four essays on China, two essays on Japan, and three essays on Korea. These Asian contributions do not only deal with pre-World War Two developments, but also with current affairs: they discuss the moral superiority feelings in mission schools before the war, the link between Christian and nationalistic education during the war, and the new crises, new challenges, new relations, and new perspectives after the war. In modern Japan and Korea women play a key role. In modern China there is a move from ‘cultural imperialism’ to ‘cultural exchange’, which opens up entirely new horizons and prospects for Christian higher education.
