The wave of migrants arriving in Europe fleeing from war or hard living conditions represents both a challenge and a great educational opportunity for the European school systems. Currently, research and good practice in this field have been mainly developed within the boundaries of national educational politics and policies, addressing distinct populations. This fragmentation has stood in the way of a systematic analysis of the question at the European level, which is a necessary condition for the advancement of successful educational interventions. It is a fundamental right for all children to be given access to quality education to ensure they reach their full potential as individuals; a right which is reflected in international law in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and supported by the Education for All Agenda (1990) and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and Optional Protocol (2006). This book brings together researchers, education policy makers and academics from the African community. The third part consists of six chapters associated with the lived experiences of stakeholders in the programs profiled in Part 2. These stories are represented through the voices of former students of inclusive tertiary education initiatives, parents of adult children with intellectual disability who have participated in tertiary education, and lecturers who have taught students with intellectual disability as members of their courses. In the fourth part, critical issues are examined, including the role of secondary school counsellors, sustaining post university outcomes, transition from university to employment, inclusive university teaching approaches, and decision-making approaches to successfully implement a tertiary education initiative. The island has historically played a special role in the cultural imagination – sometimes as a place of promise of tranquillity; at other times the remoteness has seemed attractive for more sinister reasons. Using islands for extreme exclusion has a long history and remains important for understanding the complexities of inclusive education. We live in divided and diverse societies. Current data tell us that the state of education in much of the western world may be ill-designed and ill-suited to the future needs of society. The legislated culture of education in schools frequently seems hostile to the well-being of both teachers and young people. In this current piece of work, I offer some questions about why this may be the case. With the context of climate change and global metamorphosis in mind I suggest we need to ask and discuss what we might mean by and want for ‘education’: what might be its purposes; could it be better, more ethical; shouldn’t it be more inclusive? Alternatively, we might ask, simply, ‘what is the problem that education / schools might address?’ Further discussion and ensuing answers to these questions might, I suggest, help us learn how to be human beings who care about and for each other and our diverse natures.
