What lies at the heart of financial regulation? Economic principles? Public interest motives? Bureaucratic procedures? Many academics have extensively written on financial regulation. Rarely, practitioners, and in particular European practitioners, have had their say, the opportunity to express their views on how financial regulation is and should be governed. The book attempts to fill that gap: heads of Securities Commissions, representatives of self-regulatory organizations and exchanges, lawyers, have debated on the different issues of regulation. They draw the lessons from their experience and their regulatory achievements.

The papers which make up the chapters of this book were given at a seminar in Oxford. The event took place following the election of the first Labour government for seventeen years and following an announcement of the consultation process leading up to the publication of a Transport White Paper. The debates in the book contain reflections on the legacy of the previous administration and the challenges facing the new government.

How are pharmaceutical technologies developed and controlled in our societies? To what extent should the availability of these technologies be determined by scientific experts, a democratic state, the interests of final users, or ethical principles? This unique collection brings together the work of social scientists, ethicists, lawyers and policy analysts on regulation, ethics and innovation in the pharmaceutical industry. Regulatory systems and their implications for public health in North America, Europe and developing countries are discussed, including case studies of norplant, interferon and anti-fertility vaccines.

The central theme of this book is the relationship between the regulation of energy production and environmental regulation. The book explores four themes: Assessing Regulatory Impacts; Energy Pricing; Public Policy towards New Investment and Multi-Regulation, and includes contributions from leading analysts in the fields of economics, law, politics, business and technology policy.
